Irfanview (IV), a free image viewer (found at http://www.irfanview.com/ ) states: CRW - (version 3.85): allows IrfanView to read Canon CRW files (high resolution image version) Note: this PlugIn requires additional Canon DLLs (which are noted).

Does this mean that IV will open/process RAW files in the same manner that the Canon viewer (or other RAW viewers/processors) does OR does it mean that IV can view (i.e hack the RAW files open) but not process them into 12bit TIF's?

AFAIK all it can do is read and display the embedded JPEG file - which can then be saved. It doesn't convert the actual RAW data.

It can process the RAW file too. You have to go to properties and specify how you want irfanview to handle crws. It's not very useful though. Even the Canon fileviewer has more RAW functionality.

Actually it's quite helpful as you can see the thumbs immediately. Good for quick & dirty jobs!!
