So I was liking what I was seeing in the personal functions, so, like the manual said, I installed the EOS Viewer Utility, and turned on the camera, opened up the program, and low and behold, the "camera settings" button is greyed out on each screen. ??? What the heck? How can I change them?

I wrestled with the same thing last night Ronald. I tried restarting the computer, and got control for a click of the mouse, then the software locked up. After another restart I decided to try the firewire cable instead of the USB cable and haven't had any problems since. Not sure if it was the cable, or the second restart that jump started things.
First thing to change when you get control... "Camera Owner"
Good Luck!

Ok...well, I don't think this PC has any firewire ports, so that's out. Anyone else have an answer?

Yes, the answer is that you need the firewire port and if you don't have it, then you're SOL, unfortunately.

Yeah, using the firewire screwed me at first too. ;) Never even messed with the personal functions yet though.

That's stupid as hell. Who the heck all had firewire in 2004? I can't imagine everyone that got a 1DMkII had firewire.

Don't you have a Dell? I hope mine has a firewire port :(

Yeah. It's just that the computer I have everything installed on doesn't have I-link. This one's a Dell 5100. The XPS has one, I think. I don't have anything on that, though.

The XPS should have one, just have to intall the software on it. :)
Check behind the little panel on the front of the XPS (mines Gen. #4)

Just put a firewire port in, I did it on my Dell and I don't have a clue about computers. It's all plug & play......easy.

1D cameras come with a fire wire cable (4 pin to 6 pin), with the 4 pin connnecting to the camera, You may need to get a 4 pin to 4 pin firewire cable if your pc only has a 4 pin firewire port, as mine did. Personnel settings like name change etc can only be set via the firewire cable.

Just a wild guess on my part but I'm willing to wager that a lot, as in the majority, of users of the 1D series cameras were pros whose systems were Mac based and not PC based. And all Macs have firewire as a matter of course. :)
And if they didn't have Macs, then they went out of their way to have firewire cards installed on their PCs or got one that did.
Ever do digital videography? They're all firewire ported, too.

Yep that was a major reason why I added firewire. That videography really never hit off with me is a different matter.

Yup, same here on my PC. And that was back in 2002. I still do video but not as much as I used to before I got into digital photography.

I know there was firewire. As a matter of fact, I had it too. I'm just upset. :-(

I had to do the same thing a few weeks back. I think a 3 port Firewire PCI card cost me $65 Canadian and took about 10 minutes to pop into the computer. Plug and play worked fine, no software to install.

Well, beyond that and getting used to the user interface, how are you liking your new toy? ;)
