Ah, come one ! Tell him who's boss ! Its usually the other way round....
My wife has just given birth to our first child (Olivia, 9 days old now, sat next to me looking gorgeous!). Its amazing what you can get away with buying when you can use the excuse of pin sharp baby pics.... 70-200L currently mid-air on the way from Honk Kong.. :)

also, the exchange rate is super fantastic right now, buying in the states and even paying the high international shipping rate makes it worth it.
the canon lenses over here are the same price as dollars, meaning they just put the pound currency sign in front of it, its horrible. so you may pay $1000 for a lens, over here you pay about £899 - which comes to around $1500 for the SAME EXACT LENS.

Shame you didn't get the lens, but on the other hand, if the cash spent to buy it would be from your common cash flow, then I would also been mad with you for not telling me about it. If it was your private cash, then I'd probably still be a bit sulky for you not telling as it's a fun thing to share, but I wouldn't tell you to put it on hold. Heck, your money. If it's OUR money, then it's another issue.

In all seriousness, after "hubster" cools off a bit, sit down and have a discussion about the family budget for "hobbies". Decide what you each can spend each month or year on your individual pursuits. Then stick with your plan.

jeez, after reading this, I think I feel better about my decision NOT to buy the EF-S10-22 last night. Had my finger hovering over the button, even.
After 38 years of wedding bliss (I think!) we have come to terms with individual spending. I can afford it, but decided to wait until after the annual property tax bill comes in and is paid.
The lens will still be there.
Funny thing is - my DH thinks my hobby is cute, and likes the shots of wildlife I get. He hasn't a clue as to how expensive the whole thing is. Or how far I am from being good at it.

You could always tell him that it could've been worse.... like if you were purchasing the 70-200 f/2.8L IS or something.... :D
Hope you get your lens!

To a point, you don't own the lens, you have custody of it for a while. When/if you let it go, it will still have a significant amount of value in it.
So, maybe you need to explain that you are only spending something like $100 out of the $500 it cost.

Man, the 10-22 is a great lens. You need that lens. If you had ordered a real dog of a lens ... then I'd have a chat with you .. but the 10-22 ... You really do need that lens. I use mine all the time. If I was your husband I would complain at all (then again I probably get pissed because you would always be using my 10-22).

that really sucks.. so, did he make you stop the order because he's annoyed that you didn't discuss it with him?.. or because he's concerned with finances?.. if it's the first give him a couple of days.. But, don't try to 'wow' him with all of the details as to why you have to have it (great lens by the way, I want one too).. Just keep it simple, i've tried explaining why I need soemthing and how come the old one isn't good enough and the second I start talking about apperture and focal lengths it makes it even worse cause they don't have a clue as to what i'm saying....Good luck, i'm sure you'll eventually get it...

Sounds like good justification to me... Besides, it isn't like your spending 5K on a lens, it only costs around $600. Be different scenario is hubster were the photographer, right?

I always seem to read these stories :p In my opinion if you want the lens she should allow you to buy it. I had the same problem with my former girlfriend some years ago but then it was about Paintballgear :p Well I have the gear ;) but the girl is gone  I know it seems harsh but I think that beeing able to buy something you want is the best for both parties. It comes a day when she wants to buy something also ;)

This is an easy issue to fix, 2 weeks of cold dinner, 2 weeks of no clean clothes, 2 weeks of cold shoulder, rinse and repeat as required. Easiest cure for any non pliable husband, works on me everytime. ;)

If it's the price that's an issue why don't you 'discuss' getting one secondhand with hubby? [If that fails get a friend to order it for ya! ;) ]

See... it's times like this I know why I have my 'stash' account.
It's not a secret, Hubby knows I have it... he just doesn't know how much I 'stash' into it ;)
He considers it my 'play' money... :D Doesn't realise that sometimes (and only sometimes) I manage to get a couple of grand in there and then suddenly - I own a 350D LOL
Please tell me he didn't make you cancel the order... Plureasseeeeeeee!!!

i can see problems in the future about this kind of situation - i'm a fly by the seat of my pants kinda girl - if i need something, i buy it, usually charge it :p - he likes to wait and save up for it.... (boring)
- i'm still going to get the lens....... one way or another! :D
oh and by the way, when it is something he wants, like the garmin 4runner heart rate monitor which cost us £400 ($735) that's ok
me thinks there is a double standard going on here.......

HRM is important thing. You can die without it :p But sure tell him not to buy that thing and go with Polar HRM's... much much better! :)
Seriously... I agree with you about this. I don't agree with first part, since I still think he should know about this lens (just as you should know about this HRM), but I definitely agree with last one. It should be same for both of partners not just one. Maybe it's different here, but here me and my wife have OUR money not that I have my money and she has her money. So this also leads to both of us deciding what to buy and what not to buy. Unfortunately there's not many people on world who never has to think if they can actually afford something, and can just go out buy stuff without any problems.

oh the garmin pro is much more than a hrm, but still......... why do you need such an expensive monitor to check that your heart is still beating??????? ;)

Buy the Sigma 10-20. Much cheaper and almost the same optically as the Canon (if you're a beginner, you won't notice the difference). I just bought one myself.
This is a great compromise lens, both in terms of imge quality (bang for your buck) and for your marriage.

I was married at one time, happily divorced and I do understand the situation, but it's just plain ridiculous that a person can't buy something they want if they have the money. Good luck and hope you buy the canon lens you want.
Bernt-Inge
6th of July 2006 (Thu), 09:45
I will never buy a Sigma lens again. Mine is in 10 pieces after the front element just opened itself :( Could be that the build quality is better on new lenses but I rather buy Canon ;)
tlc : you probably can find a compromise about the lens. There is always something your other half wants to buy later ?
Tlee05
6th of July 2006 (Thu), 12:27
I would just buy it and let him have his moan, once you got it there aint much he can do ;) tell him if you do need the money later on you can always sell it nearly at the same price as lenses dont really drop in value :)

Ok way way off topic... but since you asked :p I don't have any idea why your husband need it, but when I was still in xc skiing I had very good reason to spend about $500 for hrm (at those days Polar was way more expensive then it's now, even though it's still far from cheap even these days) and to spend another $500 or so for device with which you could hook it up to computer. Make long and complicated story short and simple... there's no way to train properly and to get best possible results without hrm. Feeling is just not enough in top level sport. And skiing at 140bpm or 150bpm makes huge difference in training, not to mention even more important difference with fast trainings where 175bpm is completely different thing then 180bpm. Such "small" differences in hear rate is not possible to sense without proper hrm. And those top (and most expensive) hrms are far from device which is just showing your heart is beating. :)
For normal people who are doing sport for fun, hrm is not really necessary but it actually does help you live longer :) It's really easy to go to high and without proper condition and when you are a bit older, it's not really healty to go out at +35c and speeding at max heart rate :) And it can actually be done... not for long but for long enough to get some serious problems in worse case. But on the other side... for sport like this, you can do just fine with hrm for $100 the most.
