I have been asked by an offroad driver (rockcrawling/rock racing) for a pic of him I shot during an event. One of his major sponsors wants to use it for a print ad (several major mags) and for posters for him to sign at events. The sponsor has asked him for the pic to use and he came to me....I would have no problem asking the company for $$ but where the driver (friend) is supplying it, I am not sure what to ask from him $$ wise. Sponsor money is VERY lean in this sport, this team does not break even, they spend their own money....
What do you think? Is $100 reasonable? Too Cheap?
THANKS

I am by no means a pro, but I would say that is too low. If your picture is going to end up in magazines/posters then I think you should be asking more. Even though the money may come out of his own pocket, your photo still has value. I'm not sure what you should charge, as I said I'm not a pro by any means, but I would think maybe somewhere around $300-400. I'm assuming your quoting in dollars. I am canadian and i think that much in canadian or american would be reasonable.

I do cut some slack for friends but it really depends on what they want and what it is to be used for. In this case you could end up supplying images that are going to be used in a siginficant publication and see no reason why you should give a big cut. I'd say 100.00 is to cheap. Given that it is the major sponsor that wants it ulitmately and not just your friend, I'd go full price.
I do a fair bit of work with an advertising agency and we recently have done a number of shoots where the images are being used in advertising printed brochures. They pay me my day rate for doing the actually shooting and then so much per image that is used in the publication. We negotiate on the latter and is dependant on how many they use. The last go round I charged them 200.00 per image and that was based on slightly less than 30 images used. Ultimately these costs are all bundled with theirs and passed on to the end customer.
If this is a onetime thing, I wouldn't go below 350.00 for use of an image that you already have.
