I have a backup camera is the next thing a backup flash? Seems like I can get one that I want for $125 but i have my eye on a $500 12-24mm wide angle lens that I'm wanting to use for weddings that i'm saving for. Choices Choices...

IMHO - a BU flash is the single most important piece of equipment that a WP should have...just as important as a BU body (and far more important than a specialty lens like the 12-24). I have never had a camera go down at a wedding (knocking HARD on wood), but I have lost a couple of flashes. I now carry 4 flashes to every wedding - one on each of my bodies, and two BU's. The way I see it, if your flash goes down at a dark reception, you're done for the night!

Yes, flashes can be tempermental (stuck zoom one in a while, odd behavior when batteries get weak). I use a 580 and keep a 430 on me as a backup.

I have a second 580 in my bag. They are fairly reliable but I did have one fail on me a few months ago. Not at a wedding but a commercial shoot. It was nice to be able to just slap the backup on and not interrupt the event.

I've had cameras fail temporarily (20Ds), but never flashes, but backups to both are essential. I have a 580 and a 550, and I may add a 430 some time too.
