Monitor?

Looking into a new Monitor since I find it hard to do some processing on my 17". Is there anyone who own a 19" or 20" widescreen? Does Widescreen make a difference?

Your thoughts please :-)

Thank you

Bigger is better. A wide screen monitor will give you a bit extra room for the menus that litter the screen these days. I have the luxury of a 23" model and it seems normal now

I have a 19" 4:3 screen. I would love a 20.1" WS, though.

I've got a 19" CRT I use for image processing. My laptop is a 15" widescreen and my regular desktop monitor is 15".

The title of this thread made me laugh... sorry!

Anyway, I have two 17" CRTs. I keep both calibrated, but generally only do my PP on the main monitor, and use the other one for all the tool panels, etc...

19" CRT but I too would like a large WS monitor. As some say "bigger is better"..... and as others say "quality over size"...... :-)

Put the two together and get a the biggest and best quality one you can afford.

I was using my 15" laptop... Now I just got a 19" LCD screen and a desktop computer. The difference is remarkable. My gf has a laptop with the 17" wide-screen, and it's really cool to have the extra room for the menus and toolbars.

I have a pair of 19" Samsung LCDs, and honestly I would never go back to a single display. I looked at a single 24" widescreen, but felt that a pair of regular AR monitors suited my needs better. I get slightly more screen real estate this way, and I never have to fight with windows, since I have have two programs maximized at once.

I have a ViewSonic 20.1" monitor calibrated with the Spyder Pro for my desktop, and a laptop with a 17" WS LCD panel. Not to heep about the WS format though.

I had dual 30" Apple HD Cinema Displays for a couple of days, but it drove my neck nuts. I returned them and downsized to dual 23" Cinema Display HDs. I absolutely love them and the widescreen ratio. I've gotten so used to widescreen that I had to make sure that my recent notebook purchase included a widescreen display. It's really nice working in CS2 with APS-C format images and still docking the tools. ;)

I use 2 19" CRT's at 1600x1200 on each.
2+ monitors make is so much easier to work with the computer.
I am looking for a 3rd one but Samsung doens't make the model I have anymore (want to have 3 identical monitors) and it's really hard to find a CRT monitor nowadays. I am not too fond of LCD screens, it's hard on my eyes for some reason.

LOL no worries Tom, it was my intension :D
My goodness you guys don't play when it comes to your monitor size. As I mentioned I have a Neovo 17" which I paid like $500 over three years ago. When I started looking at LCD I couldn't believe how much they've gone down. I have my eyes on this 19" widescreen VIEWSONIC seen here
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BXEUDY/103-6835335-0610220?v=glance&n=172282

Do you think it will do me any good to upgrade to just a 19" or should I just get a 20". This may sound funny but space is also a factor.

Thanks for your responses

Cheers

I have an imac with a 20" WS display and it's a lovely screen.

I've read that the Dell UltraSharp™ 2007WFP 20.1" Widescreen LCD has the same inards; over in the UK its £325, I'm guessing around $500.

Pretty! Bigger is better in some instances.
At home is a 17"
at work I keep a 20" apple display. Needless to say, I spend too much time at the office.

I've got three 19" LCDs. If you go widescreen, do at least a 20", as you will probably miss the space missing on the height.

Just upgraded from a Dell 19" Trintron with a 15" second monitor to the 24" 2405 LCD and DVI input. Huge improvement and very nice to have all that room on one monitor. Highly recomended and now that there is a 2407 out you might get some great deals on the 2405.

I don't get the widescreen thing - you get less screen area that way.

Not really, you just get it in different areas. Personally the attraction for me is that frames coming off of my camera are not 4:3 and a wide screen actually allows me to view them at a larger rartio than on a 4:3. You're right in that a 19" widescreen does not have as many horizontal lines as a 19" 4:3, but for the price of a 19" 2 years ago, you can get a 23" widescreen today, which yields more real estate.

Many 16:9 or 16:10 displays can be rotated 90 degrees when working in portrait orientation.

If you have a video card that's driver that does not support wide screen ratios, I would definately upgrade the video card first, less you could experience distortion via a stretched desktop.

I should have also mentioned that a real value of widescreen becomes evident when working with apps like Aperture, Lightroom, or Bridge...the extra width allows you to view two or more images in a side by side comparison in a larger view than a 4:3 can provide...especially with doc'd tool bars etc...

currently i have a dell 19" flat CRT and boy its great for color, nice on size. I am however going to get a 20.1 inch widescreen pretty soon because i cant afford the size of a CRT in a dorm rom lol. i really want that 24 inch wide though... it all depends. i might settle for the 20.1 and add a second later when i get the space.

I have a philips 21" monitor that I was lucky enough to get from my last job when we closed. It was used in the graphic arts dept. and is very accurate according to my gretag eyeone. I use 1600x1200 resolution and have all the room I want to work on a picture. Can't live without it now.

Old pic but the monitors are still the same,

Dual Sony AG CRT's (still the best IMHO)

http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/Skynet004.jpg

The "big one" is the FW900 24" widescreen.
the other is the G500 21"

Even though they are not a "matched" pair, they are both very similar in tube design, and both have the same tube height, and run the same vertical resolution.. both are now calibrated,. so they work seamlessly together.
Obviously, the 24" is the main screen, and I dock tools etc.. on the 21" to the right.

Shows how old the pic is!

Actually by then I was long time "retired" but I used to play in a Squad,.. up through TFD..
I stopped shortly after TFD, but played online solo for years afterwards. I was good too!
I wish people still played TFD.. I didn't enjoy the newer high gloss games as much (BHD etc..) They looked better, bt did not have the same excellent nline game play.

Most of the good Dell CRT's are indeed Sony AG CRTs... absolutley great monitors!

you can still get those 24" Sony's on Ebay for roughly $400 shipped. one of my friends got the SGI branded one and it is very very nice. they are heavy, almost 100lbs, IIRC.

I have 4 23in vewsonic CRT monitors I have had awhile and I really like them. however the last 2 monitors that i got are 21in dell flat wide screens and they are very nice. I was always told for graphix or photography the CRT is much better. after working with both I think I like the flat screens better.. and the wide screen love it..

I have LCD Dell 24 incher. I would say that crt's have the edge on final resolution quality, unfortunately for a 24inch crt (i have one at work) it's a great hoofing thing that takes up about two peoples desk space. I have always tended to set my monitor res to somewhere near the max that the monitor/card allows and I did find myself wanting to crank it up another notch with the Dell but hey ho, I'm used to it now and love it to bits. (Got the Pantone huey calibrator too, cheap and very much recommended)
