I forgot how good this lens was. I was told to get it as my first walk around lens, and boy I was not dissapointed. To be honest, when I saw this shot, I thought it was one of the first shots with my 70-200 f/4L, I was amazed when I read the exif. I got this lens off ebay, and it has had a bit of wear, the barrel extends when you point it down, can be repaired, but I am gonna leave it...1/125" F5.6 ISO400

I am new to DSLR photography. I mean like I just started two weeks ago. I have a canon eos 40D with EF 28-135 IS USM kit lens. I took my first night photo with it and noticed only daytime photos listed here. Here is the link to it on this forum [URL="http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=486591"]
I thought the kit lens did an excellent job shooting night photos as well

Ah OK!
I used Lightroom. Clicked the grayscale button, then adjusted the exposure, blacks, and brightness sliders to taste. I then adjusted the curves to get more contrast. I then adjusted the grayscale parameters using the point adjustment tool to alter the "color". That was about it. A few minutes is all.

I'm trying to debate if trading my Sigma 17-70mm for a 24-70mm was a good idea, or if I should've gone with the Canon 28-135. I think I might've enjoyed the 135mm's on the long end. But, the loss of the constant 2.8 is still questionable. Beautiful images from everyone on here though!!

hehehehe...welcome to the club. :)
There are only four of those wine goblets. Even the stems are cut. My best guess is they were made by France Crystal or even someone like Baccarat. Hard to say as nondescript as they are and I have only done a cursory bit of research. The estate they came from was in Montecito, CA and was nothing but French antiques ranging from about 1720 to the around the 1930s. I have several really nice pieces. I wasn't in a big buying mood that day and, well, just didn't buy like I normally would have. ;)

Thanks for the comments on the pics...glad ya found them nice to look at. I still think people underrate this lens. It's a quite serviceable to often outstanding lens for us who take pictures because we like to look at them not the square pixels that make up the picture. ;)

This was the only lens that I had when shooting some insane surf last winter at La Jolla Shores in December. The sun was setting and it was dark in 30 minutes but was able to pull off this shot.
This is a pretty solid lens and even though it is not an "L" lens it's a pretty versatile lens. It's the poor man's 24-105mm L lens but I'm a firm believer that in the hands of a good photographer the 28-135mm can yield better results than a lesser experienced photographer w/an "L" lens.
I recently purchased an 80-200mm 2.8 which I look forward to taking to the beach when we get the big winter surf.

Not a super-huge fan of this lens, but there's a lot of bang-for-you-buck appeal. Which is about the only reason I'd get it. But I went into Best Buy the other day and they happened to have the lens and they were asking $600. $600!! I told the salesman that the price was ridiculous and I think he took it personally. Oh well, nice shots guys. Making me second-guess my decision.

Hey guys. Can someone please tell me how this 28-135mm compares with the 18-55mm kit lens that comes with the 450D? I'm new to photography but i'm learning fast so pls pardon my rookiness. I would like to know which has better zoom, which is a wider angle lens, which is sharper and which achieves better DoF. I'm trying to find out if its worth adding to my collection as I already have the 18-55 kit lens. I am looking for a lens that can help me achieve good DoF(i love the look of photos with blurred background/bokeh), a better zoom than my kit lens, wider angle, and ofcourse a very affordable lens.
fz_za
7th of September 2008 (Sun), 19:17
e.omega, I've actually owned both the 18-55mm and 28-135mm (at the same time, while I had my 300D). I bought the 300D (with 18-55mm lens as a kit) and the 28-135mm at the same time, and I rarely ever used my 18-55mm. The 18-55mm was nice to keep as a standby for when I needed a wider field of view (which, when shooting mostly portraits like I do, is not often).
Regarding your questions:
* The 28-135mm has "better zoom" than the 18-55mm - it will let you get a LOT closer to your subject (135mm vs. 55mm) which will help if you are shooting people or subjects not very close to you.
* The 18-55mm is much wider (18mm vs. 28mm). Compared to the 28-135mm, this helps if you are close to your subject and you cannot move yourself further back to 'fit' the subject in the frame (e.g. shooting a large group of people in a small room, or shooting large buildings, etc.).
* I never did any comprehensive testing, but I found both to be sufficiently sharp, although I'm pretty sure that overall the 28-135mm had better quality than the 18-55mm. There's probably very little in it, especially for persons new to photography like yourself. If you want the ultimate sharpness, shoot at f/8 aperture, on a sturdy tripod with mirror lock-up ;)
* DoF. I believe both lenses are f/3.5-5.6. However, because the 28-135mm is longer (can zoom in more) you will get a much more blurred background than you would with the 18-55mm zoomed in all the way (again, 135mm vs. 55mm). You can also try and move yourself closer to the subject and use the largest aperture your lens lets you to blur the background (this would work with either lens, although the 18-55mm may distort more because it is wider).
Considering that you want a lens that will give you better bokeh, I would highly recommend you pick up a Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 (about US$90). It's an amazing lens for the price and will let you blur your backgrounds a lot more than either the 18-55mm or the 28-135mm. It is obviously not a zoom lens though, so you may find yourself having to switch lenses on your camera frequently.
Regarding better zoom and wider angle, unfortunately, you can't have it all in a single lens. If you want something wider than 18-55mm, you will have to look at the Canon EF-S 10-22mm and it is not cheap at about US$700. If you want a better zoom which is affordable, the 28-135mm is a good choice and I would recommend it. Once you are ready, you can always sell what you have and step up to something like a 17-55mm f/2.8 IS and a 70-200mm to go with it (but then you are looking at AT LEAST US$1500 or so).
Lastly, if you do not mind changing lenses when your subject matter calls for it, you could get a Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 (about $360) which will give you more "zoom" than your 18-55mm, AND a much larger aperture meaning you will be able to get your backgrounds blurred a lot more also. The downside will be physically changing lenses on your camera (unless you get another 450D :))
Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing, and how it works out for you.

e.omega, I've actually owned both the 18-55mm and 28-135mm (at the same time, while I had my 300D).
Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing, and how it works out for you.
Hey Thanks alot for the info. It was really helpful. After reading your comment, a couple threads, and a thread i opened(http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=565494), I have desided to get just the 50mm f/1.8 since i already have a wide lens that serves most of my needs. I'm going to buy a zoom lens but later on. I've realised that I don't really need the 28-135mm, or maybe not just right now because all three lenses are within the same "range". I like the zoom/DoF better compared to my 18-55mm though. At the same time, someone is willing to sell a new 28-135mm to me for $285 to me locally and I dont know if i'll regret passing on that deal.

I think he was talking about the old 18-55 rather than the new 18-55 IS that comes on the 450D. The new 18-55 IS is an excellent performer with extremely sharp optics. Do a search and you'll come up with many, many threads.
I'd also like a longer lens as a walk around but I'm not willing to give up the 18 Vs. the 28. Canons announced but not yet available 18-200 IS lens looks interesting if the performance is comparable to the 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS. It's too much money though at $699.

You're welcome. I'm glad you've come to a decision - I'm sure you will be really happy with the 50mm f/1.8. I hate to throw a spanner in your works, but US$285 for a new 28-135mm is a pretty good deal ;) But I think for your needs, a 50mm f/1.8 to supplement your 18-55mm for better DoF is a good choice.

Good catch, Jim. You're right - I'm referring to the original 18-55 - in fact, the mark I (I think there was a mark II that came out before the 18-55 IS). I cannot comment on the 18-55 IS as I have not used it. I'm sure it is a good lens though, at the very least value-wise. The 18-200mm is also very interesting.

I really love the eerie feeling these two have! I just wish they would have a tiny wee bit more contrast and maybe even saturation to make the colour of the bridge pop against the blue sky, just a little, nothing too vibrant so the soft feeling of the shots remain. :]

Folks,
I am considering adding a lens to my bag (budget around $300) and the choices would include this lens as well as the 55-250 IS lens.
(My current kit includes just the 18-55 IS and the 50/1.8.)
What's the prevailing opinion as to which lens has better IQ? I like the idea of having the reach of the 55-250, as well as not paying for some redundancy in the 28-55 range... but then again the 28-135 range makes for a pretty nice walk-around.
Thoughts?

I think that the general consensus is that the 18-55 IS & 55-250 IS are going to give you the best IQ. The build quality of the 55-250 is not going to be as good as the 28-135 and it does not have a USM focus motor, so it will focus a little bit slower. I have the 28-135 and while I am selling it, it has served me well. It has a great walk around range, but for me I needed something wider. Since you already have the 18-55 IS, I would probably go for the 55-250mm. If you never have to go wide, then it is hard to beat the 28-135mm for a "bang for your buck" lens.

 I just sold it last week...it is gonna be replaced by a Sigma 24-60 f/2.8 with my other lenses I did not need the full range so I used the 28-135 to help by the 150-500 :D
Thanks for the comments on the pics...glad ya found them nice to look at. I still think people underrate this lens. It's a quite serviceable to often outstanding lens for us who take pictures because we like to look at them not the square pixels that make up the picture. ;)
How did you take that picture? Which bird were you focusing on? I'm disapointed with my lens, so I decided to order the Sigma as well.
Hah, thats what I ended up replacing mine with. Still kinda miss the reach on the 28-135, mostly because the 24-60 is currently my longest lens :(
I currently have the Sigma but I sold a couple of things and am about to order my new 40D but I can't decide if I want the 28-135 or just the body with a grip. I can't have both due to budget reasons (plus the wife will kill me if I spend more than I have in my paypal account). I know I can sell one of the lenses to fund a grip later but I just can't decide. I would love the extra reach and the USM and IS.

Because we should be! I'm not gonna say the real reason but those of us who are married or in relationships know what I'm talking about;)

I like taking shots of critters in my yard, including bats, hummingbirds, and various types of dragonflies.
