MF, turn the focusing ring to macro and then move the camera until you have the focus and focal point you want. No live view, Taken with an XTi/400d

This is the first picture I took with my 50D and the 28-135. The 50D is the first SLR I have touched. This forum will help, that's for sure. I have learned enough to get me on my way, I think. http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh4/goosetwo/011609_0011_50_edited-2.jpg

out of curiosity, why trade? I've been debating on the 28-135 myself but notice that most people use it for outdoors and I mainly take pics indoors of my family. would you advise agains indoor shots with this lens?

This lens is "ok" for indoors, but a lens that can reach out to f2 or so would be better suited to eliminate the need for a flash in most cases.

Great shots everyone. I've been slowly building up my arsenal of lenses and acquired this lens, a Nifty Fifty, and the 100mm f2.8 macro lens. I wanted sharp pictures and viewed alot of photos on this thread and have been very impressed with everyones shots.

What type of lighting did you shoot under? If it was fluorescent, did you use the white balance setting on the camera, or an FL filter?

What do you mean by first big lens? If it will be your first walk around lens, this thing is great. I find my copy is a little soft when zoomed all the way in but pretty damn sharp at the wider end. I also need to stop it down a little (usually f5.6) to get a nice sharp capture but the IS offsets that. I would definitely recommend it if what you need is a cheaper walk around/do anything lens.

I got this lens in my 40D kit since it only cost me $100 extra. It is a little softer than some of the other lenses I own but for its price point and intended audience it is a great lens and worth the price that a used one is going for. I find FL great if I only want to take one lens to the park or something. It does not go real wide but I have my 17-50 to cover.

Don't shot it dead center, usually looks better off center. Just don't cut off parts unless your doing a close up of certain parts. Read up on the Rule of Thirds. Then remember that rules are made to be broken.

Time to sell this lens (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=687984) for something a little wider. Amazing walk around lens, though. #1 and #2 have noise reduction, #4 had levels, #5 got some USM, #6 had selective coloring. All the rest are unedited RAW conversions.

Love this one... what a great subject! Output looks a little soft, though... do you think that's the lens, Kev? Or is it more a matter of web compression / not enough USM in DPP?
I've been thinking about adding this lens at some point but wonder if it would be too redundant with my 18-55 IS / 55-250 IS combo... although for certain situations it would let me travel with just one lens.

I love all your acronym speak!;) I was going to sell this, or let it go because I found the stable had too many horses I would rather bring out. However, the comment you made is a good one. It's a great general purpose lens. For slightly more money, I've been seeing some really good things about the Tamron 18-270 with VC (Tamron's IS). That really gives you a 'walk around lens' for all seasons. Takes you wide, and telephoto.

I haven't seen many 100% crops in here. I've never done one... so I looked it up, I hope I did it right. I took the originally sized image and just re sized the canvas to 1024, thus a crop of the full image... ( this is correct ya? just generally I don't see people sharing them so big  so I didn't know if I was doing it right )

Looks about right to me, and pretty decent for a consumer lens at 800ISO. So, did it sharpen up pretty good....Some prefer sharpened shots, some prefer unsharpened....I might be in the minority, hoping to see shots after some sharpening has been applied.
Never owned this lens but bought one for my Aunt, will be here today, gonna give it a whirl on my 5Dmk2 and see what it can do:)

Funny, I was thinking the same thing, this lens really surprised me....Got mine for like $200 brand new from someones kit.....Weird how cheap they are...Not a big fan of variable aperture lenses, but using this in the spring and summer outside will give you great results.

I have to keep convincing myself that my $1100.00 24-105L is that much better than the 28-135is, sure the L is better built and F4 but is it that much better? Another lens that has surprised me is the Tamron 18-270vc. I just got it and it seems to be a very good copy, much sharper than I expected at the long end and fun to use.

Noooo :) but I had to send in the lens to canon twice. I'm really happy with the performance of the 28-135mm especially on a FF the focal range is good.
First time I sent it in it came back within factory specs. I was pissed and I knew the customer service manager from previous service so I called her.
I called and explained the issue and said I left photos, she understood what my issues was and she would explain to the service manager. It would front focus from say 70-135mm giving a soft image and would have to normally step it down to F8 to get a decent image.
I said at shorter focal length the focus would be fine so if they use 50mm as a reference no fault would be found.
I left specific instruction before you ship the lens back to me call me before and tell me what work was done as if no fault was found I would be very upset.
I sent in one of my body that was previously calibrated a XSI with the lens. The tech called a few days later and said that the lens now is as perfect if canon was to make a perfect lens. The focus cannot be corrected any better than what they did.
I told them thank you and please ship me back the lens so I can test.
On the XSi it also focus perfectly at all focal length it focuses dead center. Im very lucky that the 5 lens that I have need 0 MA on the 50D or 5D II.
My 85mm F1.8 is dead on so any new body that I get if it does not focus at 0 MA or dead center(a camera without MA) I would exchange it at the dealer right away or send it to canon for service.
It's nice to know that I have the MA if I need to.
The exif should be intact if not you can download and check with dpp 0 MA.
http://www.pbase.com/yaamon/image/113191686
Here is another photo taken with a 50D. 0 MA shot at 75mm F5 and its tack sharp no post processing just converted from raw via dpp and resize.

Hi All,
Bought a new 40D with the 28-135 as the kit lens. Am worrying about quality, can you please (28-135 users) check with me if there is user errors, a quality issue, or it is only how all 28-135 act?
Photos taken by my friend that bought it for me, I didn't receive it yet. Also note that my friend knows very little about photography and I told him how to set everything to auto and take shots.
This one is a corner crop and has a lot of CA, the center is far better. This is although aperture is f10.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2462/3593019068_f4f5d0812f_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/13625720@N02/3593019068/)
This is a resized shot and shows a lot of OOF space in the photo. Can this be a quality issue with focusing?
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2428/3593020688_b4162fc698_o.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/13625720@N02/3593020688/)
Also I feel that most photos taken by the lens by others on the forum here or on Flickr tends to be low-saturated. Is this a known issue with the lens?
On the other hand, some of the photos taken by my friend are in focus but with shallow DOF.
Thanks a lot for the help and sorry for my little knowledge about the issue.

it's impossible to know if there is a focusing issue without knowing what the focus was on to begin with...
if you think there is a problem though, i'd suggest posting something in the EF/EF-S lens section of this forum...you'll get many more responses, as this is just an archive for shots

Just got mine today, bought used for $200 shipped. I'll post some shots once I get some tonight....
$260 is not bad, if it's flawless and includes everything and shipping... IMO
Sample image...just got the lens a few hours ago and straight from the camera, just resized

One my wife took with her D60...
f/5.6 1/350 ISO 100. Just a bit of sharpening...

if you're shooting with a flash like that...sometimes it's better to shoot manual this way you use a faster shutter speed...the 1/6 is what causes the side of his face to look blurry...if you raise it up to 1/160-1/200 it will be sharper

Messing around with my 28-135.
This was on a tripod, but I forgot to turn off IS.

Bright early afternoon sun made this a tough shot to get... used a ND+4 and CPL filter to slow the shutter speed down.

Had a chance to shoot a golf tournament yesterday. This lens was on my camera the entire time...
