Bright early afternoon sun made this a tough shot to get... used a ND+4 and CPL filter to slow the shutter speed down.

For a while i've been searching the net for details on the 5D MKII with a 28-135mm lens....there isn't much let me tell you!
It was what i could afford and the more i use these, the more it blows me away. Ok, i'm not used to FF, but tbh the sharpness the 28-135 produces on the MKII is a lot better than i expected.
The following is straight out the camera with NO processing at all.
HTP and ALO are off and NR is on standard.

Actually, these photos ^^ show more the power of the 5DMKII's power to pump out perfectly usable photos at ISO 1250! ;-) But I will give you props for having a cute dog!! :D :D
It's true that the 28-135 is in a bit of no-man's land 10 years after the fact. When it came out in 1998, there was really only the 24-85mm to compete against it....and on FF these lenses gave you nice width. Paired with a low-end Rebel, it took excellent pictures. One could have both FF and this lens without spending a ton.
But once digital took off, things changed....especially with the advent of the 1.6x crop body. And then came the 24-105mm L in 2005. People spending 1D and 5D kind of money typically don't mind dropping an extra $1k to get the latest and greatest lens. People sticking with the 1.6 find the 28mm isn't wide any more (plus there's now a 17-85mm EF-S lens that approximates a 28-135mm on FF).
So the 28-135mm is between a rock and a hard place. BUT....for the person needing a 'tweener' lens OR a less-expensive all-purpose lens for their FF, it still takes excellent photos. And I still think it's one of the best ring-motor IS lens values out there, given the fact that you can buy these babies used for under $300.

Totally agree.
I expected it to show it's price and until i get a 24-105 to compare directly, i won't know for sure.
I hope if i do a direct comparison with a 24-105, it may help other folk, if they can't afford to go the whole hog.

i don't think there is a macro dial...i think the macro is just kind of a b.s. term they throw on the lens cause it can focus closer than some other lenses...

All I have now is this 24-70 Sigma HF and it is a very long step down from the 28-135 IMO. The Sigma 17-70 has awesome quality, but I loved my 28-135 quality also, and it was a great walk around lens. But I plan on getting a 70-200 L next year :)
I can deal with either or...just a choice I have to make. Keep posting shots from this outstanding lens!

eh...if you were disappointed with your 18-55mm IS you'll probably be disappointed with the 28-135mm to be honest...they're both good lenses if you weren't getting good shots with that, it won't be any easier for you to get good shots with this...

I sure hope not. I looked at both lens at Best Buy and the 28-135IS was so much clearer than the 18-55IS - Oh well - have both of them so we will see. Not to take up any more space - I received the 28-135IS lens. Boy what a difference over the 18-55IS lens. Just taking a hand held shot out my front room window - and the pictures was about 50 times more clear than the 18-55IS lens. Thus making me beleive that my 18-55IS lens is not working as it should. I think as its new - it will be making a trip back to Canon.

Regarding the 18-55mm IS for a moment - I think it is capable of 'very' good image quality "for the price". Build is basic & its essentially an outdoor lens with a reasonably practical zoom range 'almost' qualifying it as a good walk-around. I would think, unfortunately, that a few users have received poor copies of the 18-55 IS if you perceive the 28-135 dramatically outshines it.
This kit lens has received very good reviews including one from dpreview (image quality wise) here:
www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_18-55_3p5-5p6_is_c16/page5.asp
(http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/canon_18-55_3p5-5p6_is_c16/page5.asp)
and another
www.photozone.de/canon-eos/181-canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f35-56-is-test-report--review?start=2 (http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/181-canon-ef-s-18-55mm-f35-56-is-test-report--review?start=2)
Anyways! Been gleaning this thread and I'm impressed! I was set to have the 17-55mm f/2.8 IS as my next lens (in anticipation as a wedding lens) but occurred to me just the other day that my 18-55mm is just fine for outdoor portraits and landscape sunrise & sunsets, etc - but I love the reach of my 70-300mm too. I really need to fill the gap between 55mm & 70mm for walking around...
The versatility of the 28-135mm just might have me hooked, and in my view the Image quality equals the 18-55mm - and that suits me just dandy!
Reading a few reviews of this 28-135mm portrays a solid performer, such as:
www.photozone.de/canon-eos/190-canon-ef-28-135mm-f35-56-usm-is-test-report--review
and
www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-28-135mm-f-3.5-5.6-IS-USM-Lens-Review.aspx
This lens would likely satisfy my need for extended focal length as a great walk-around, reserving my safari adventures (aka animal & bird shooting) for the 70-300mm IS. (both the 17-85mm & newer 18-135mm don't perform well enough based on what I've read)
There is also some great talent exhibited in this thread! Very enjoyable.
I'm surprised you have followed my ramblings down this far so thanks for reading! I could be inspired to get this as my next lens due to this thread.

The relatively new EF-S 15-85mm has Excellent reviews - which explains its price tag also...
If you like landscapes and portraiture - consider the 15-85mm (85mm is no slouch in focal length!)
if you want portraiture with a versatile mid-range tele-zoom - consider the 28-135mm, but image quality is lower compared to 15-85mm.
The 50mm f/1.8 is a cheap fast lens, easy to carry and good for low light. Build quality is yucky. But nevertheless I recommend getting it now or later in addition to a zoom.
All comes down to what type of shooting you are doing now - and what type of shooting do you perceive you will be doing in the future.
Hope this helps with a start in the right direction.

You can't go wrong with either of these lenses if you're looking to add something to the 18-55 kit lens.
The 28-135mm is more of an 'all-purpose' lens you take to the park with the family. The 50mm 1.8 is your best entry-point into prime lenses with a wide aperture. It really depends what you want to shoot.

Can anyone tell me if they've noticed this with their 28-135mm?
Zooming from 50-100mm there is a big difference and the amount of image size increase seems constant, but when it gets to 100mm and above it seems to suddenly "slow down". i.e. the difference between 100mm and 135mm is very small compared to about 80-100mm. I can understand the various sciences with light angles and whatnot meaning 10-20mm would seem a bigger difference than 450-500mm, but surely it wouldn't be such a sudden slow down at precisely 100mm?

This lens is on it's way to me now. I traded an 85mm f/1.8 and $125 for it. Seemed like a fair deal. I just didn't find myself using the 85mm at all. I think the 28-135mm will compliment my 17-50mm much better. Great shots everyone.
