Don't fret. :)
Atmospheric conditions have to be perfect to get an acceptable photo of the moon with a consumer grade lens.

I have an old copy of this lens that I got cheap ($175) that I don't use much anymore. But I do have a question about it that some of you might know the answer to. I posted this in the lens forum, but thought this might be a much more focused subforum to post it in.
How many examples are there of this lens where the IS switch doesn't actually have the words "On" and "Off" but has an "O" and "|" instead? Mine doesn't have the words, and I didn't think much about it until I saw some shots of one in the sale forum. These don't have date codes, so I have no idea how old it is, but thought the labeling of the IS switch might provide some clue. It's a Japan-made version, for what that's worth. Just curious mostly. Thanks,
jabtas

Open the box and see if the lens suffers from lens creep. Gently shake it and see if the lens extends. It probably will. This isn't a huge deal, but it's like shooting a musket downhill. It can easily slip after you achieve focus.

That's a pretty fair price for it if it's in good shape. It's not a steal, but you're not being robbed either. I count myself lucky for having gotten one for under $180 a while back.

I just got this lens for a late Fathers Day present, and my wife just picked me up a T2I as a birthday present. So it was not only my first time shooting with them, but also my first attempt at M. I've had a Rebel XT since 2006 but never learned how to use it. Now I have an itch to learn how and this came from my first attempt (w/ just minor post)

You're getting some outstanding shots ou of your 28-135 for sure! I've owned a 24-105L in the past, and it's a really good lens. One of the sharper lenses I've used, and I've missed it since selling it for a 28-70L.

Whatttt?? What shortcomings do you think your 20D's sensor has?? 20D's are more than capable of producing super-SHARP images and would certainly benefit from better glass... I don't think ANYONE would EVER tell you that better glass will make your pictures worse because of "sensor shortcomings"
Honestly this sounds like an example of someone who has fallen victim of the MP race...

Not at all, still more than happy to be using the 8mp of my 20D (I never mentioned anything about getting another body), just reluctant to drop a grand on glass that may not show improvements, especially as my current combo seems to be so well matched

Two weeks ago; my trip to California. All photos with the T2i and 28-135 USM IS. Not a lot of blue skies, unfortunately. Overcast conditions are great for portraits of people, but not so good for landscapes, etc. But, it is what it is.

Not a bad lens. Really good for a travel lens. But not a great lens by any means. There's a reason people sell it, new (from a kit) for $250 or so. It's not as good as the suggested retail price would have you believe (which is about $450). It's an inconsistent lens, but like I said, if you want something with IS USM and a wide range for travel, it's a good one to have.
If I go to fullframe (hopefully within a year or two) and really boost up the lens collection, I'll keep the T2i with the 28-135 attached for those times when I just want something I can toss around and enjoy.

Very nice! I'd call that shot a keeper. Love the juxtaposition of the blue eyes against the red hair bow.

It can be a very sharp lens. You might want to start a new thread with some sample 100% crops showing lack of sharpness along with shooting data to see if anyone can suggest a solution.

I originally only saw the climber in the red top when I took the shot - only when I got home did I see the guy spotting him slightly further down (they may be hard to see at this web size resolution).

A small amount of curves just to bring the contrast up and then I ran it through the ManyK Sharpening script detailed here:
http://manyk.deviantart.com/journal/Better-sharpening-in-Photoshop-214143878
Those rocks in the image are also very "clean" looking - they are very striking when stood in front of them so that might also account for some of it.
As an aside, I have also noticed that this lens does not really go to 135 - in fact I would estimate that it only just makes it to 100 - I have a manual Zeiss 135 and that frames in a *lot* closer. Still, not complaining for the price of this lens..... (or it could be the Zeiss that is longer than 135)

I am pretty sure I had a good copy of the 28-135 and I got a bad copy of the 15-85 though. My 28-135 was pretty consistently sharper than the 15-85 which is pretty unheard of.

I'm in the process of buying one of these from a POTN member. Shooting events I find my 24-60 is just too short on my 5D (and I don't think 24-70 would be much different), and with a flash I really don't need to shoot at f/2.8 anyways. Don't know if I really want to spend the money on a 24-105L so I will try this first. :) Lots of good reviews on the internet (for the price) even Ken Rockwell loves it. LOL

Got my 28-135 in the mail today. It's a dark rainy day so I won't be doing much shooting, but i'll give my initial impressions:
1. The IS works quite well
2. My Sigma 24-60 is quite a bit wider than this lens, I'm not sure how you guys use this on crop without anything wider. I don't think it should be much of an issue on my 5D though.
3. 135mm is much longer than 60mm :)
Can't wait to do some real shooting with it!

Thanks, I wish I could take some credit for it but its all in the "Night Portrait" mode on my t3i.
I set up a tri-pod, set the 2 second timer, Speedlite 430ex in hotshoe, that's it. The mode fires the flash and leaves the shutter open for 2 seconds. The cloud cover was absorbing the moonlight evidently. I didn't change the colors in post but I did adjust the "fill light" some using the Raw tool in Photoshop.
I think this setting would be awesome for posing subjects in front of a city skyline at night.
Edit: the settings ended up being f3.5, ISO 400, 2 second shutter.

This is a pretty solid lens that gets a bad rap.
I don't use it much anymore though since I got my 17-55. But it still produces good images.
