The Canon EF 28-135mm IS was one of my favorite lenses. Its not a L and at 135mm f5.6 is considered slow but when used out doors its a fantastic lens with sharp results. So if you own this lens, show your best right here. Lets see some cool shots:cool:

Not sure they're my best, but they are recent. Two from WDW, two from the Konza Tallgrass Prairie. The lizard photo had to be saved at a pretty low resolution for the web, and doesn't look nearly as good here as it does on paper. The guitar at Rock 'n' Roller Coaster was taken about midnight, illuminated primarily by light from the sign itself.

It was the first lens I got....and I was quite pleased with many pictures I took with it.

However, with my recent purchase of the 70-200 2.8, and ownding the 17-40 and 85 1.8, I rarely use it anymore. So I'm going to sell mine. Anyone intersted, PM me.

were any of these pictures edited at all or is this what the Canon 28-135mm IS is capable of?

Hey everyone, I've been wanting to get a good basic walk-around lens that won't cost me an arm and a leg to get. I like the 28-135 but I also like its EF-S counterpart the 17-85, since I can get the true 28-135 with my XTi. I know I couldn't use the EF-S with my older film bodies, but I'm not to concerned about that.

I've been reading the reviews and things for both, and have come up with mixed results. Basically I'd just like to ask in everyone's opinion which one is better as far as optical performance and overall feel of the lens goes? Or, if there is a better suggestion for a good wide-angle to telephoto lens? Appreciate the help.

Hi dudes,

not my best shoots but shoots,

i really LOVE this lens , many people don't like it , probably because they got not a good one, mine is OK and I'm very happy with the results I'm having with my 400D and it.

I'm writing from Italy,

Hoping you like the pics.

Maybe more in the future.

I am amazed to find an archive for a lens that is largely scorned by the L crowd on this BBS. I love my 28-135, however, I am replacing it with a 17-55, f/2.8 for an upcoming Europe trip. My new lens should arrive on Wednesday and I will be testing it against photos like these (inspired by the light box thread):

170277

My plan is to shoot my entire knife collection in a homemade styrofoam cooler light box (see this thread: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=281524

I use this lens for everything from birds to grandkids to macro. I bought it to use on a full frame film SLR but it works fine on my 20D. Thanks for starting this thread for an unappreciated Canon lens.

I'm also a fan of this lense. I was out playing with it the other day.
I've been playing with the new sig the past couple of weeks, but thought I should take the 28-135 for a walk. I don't think it's my best, but what the hey!!

Editing in PS or DPP... I'm sure some were... Unsharpen Mask is usually used to give it a bit more crispness... Other than that, I'd say most of the colors and such are captured from the lens...

I read alot of people complaining about the "front element" wobble in the reviews on www.adorama.com (http://www.adorama.com), however the quote that sold me was "no one is going to know your front element is wobbly when they see your picture." I'm trying to learn to ignore it.

My question: I've noticed you can manually focus while the switched is turned to AF. I did it accidentally and never did it again, asssuming it was a bad move. Is this correct?

I had one and it should be OK, the lens has full-time manual focus capability.

This lens has been with me ever since I moved into the world of DSLRs (with my 300D). I love it and I have got some excellent shots with it over the years. The build quality is acceptable.

I'm going to be upgrading from it soon because the IS implementation on it is only 2-stop (newer lenses such as the 17-55 f2.8 IS have 3-stop IS, and from what I have read the 70-200 f4 L IS has 4-stop IS), and the lens is a little too slow for the kind of shooting that I do (indoors, gloomy lighting, etc.) As an outdoor walkaround though, it is spectacular.

Decent bokeh and nice colours:

(also see: my contribution to the bokeh thread (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showpost.php?p=3987224&postcount=2967).)

Decent macro capability:

Chrisn812 - yes this is the same lens you would get with a 40d kit. You may want to look at buying the lens seperate though, you might get a better deal... (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=418121)

I assume you would want something wide for cars. (I'm not sure though)

That being said 28mm is not wide enough on an XTi. I would go for the Sigma.

I bought a used copy from a member about a month ago. I'm very happy with it. I have a few L lenses and really didn't expect too much from this but liked the range and wanted to try one ( could be a little wider ). The lense has surprised me with the photos it takes.

I had to do an errand for my wife Sunday that took me along the coast so I took this lense and my camera.

-spam- hit the nail on the head. I would imagine that the target market of the 40D is the kind that would spend a lot on higher-end lenses, so they figure they can make a ~$100 "profit" by buying the kit lens and selling it closer to its actual value (which is a lot more than the differential in the 40D body only vs. 40D with 28-135mm).

As for the lens itself, if you have enough light (daytime, outdoors) it is fantastic (just look at apjospeh's great shot above). It's got amazing (focal) range as well.

I think this is the ideal lens for "beginners" looking to move up from the 18-55mm because it is so much longer and has IS (although a dated, 2-stop design) too. "Beginners" being those that can barely justify spending $400 on a lens (let alone $1000+). This was the first lens I bought for my first DSLR (300D). It was my walkaround for over 2 years. I've since moved on, but lost the convenience of the range that this lens offered me (not to mention the light weight, compared to my f/2.8 monsters .)

I bought this lens to compliment a new Rebel XTi. Since it was my first venture with a DSLR, I practiced a bit inside. A few days later when the weather was half-way decent, I took it for a "spin" with my dogs. I ended up with over two hundred photos to choose from. With dogs in motion, what you get is not predictable. These are a few I liked.

why isn't this lens popular anymore?

I think Canon's decision to include this lens in the 40D kits did bring back some of it's popularity. It's not a bad lens and I still use it for a change of pace sometimes, but it's not wide enough for most people using crop cameras. Since I have the 17-55 IS, which is sharper, faster and wider, I usually prefer to take it rather than the 28-135.

I decided to get this lens because of the range and price. It's not super sharp like some higher end L's, but it's still pretty decent for the price. Excellent lens to shoot outdoors but not very good in low-light conditions with only f/3.5-5.6 range.

Here are some pics taken with this lens:

I think 100% crops are good for seeing sharpness, instead of a full photo that's been resized. Therefore, I've cropped these ones. I can't remember what this forum's size rules are but they're quite big anyway so I'll link them.

All with a 400D +28-135mm IS USM

Yes, ducks! This one is a little soft, possibly because it was a moving target. Although I'd have thought 1/200 would make a good, still image.

This one was ok for a quick point-and-shoot shot.
