View Full Version : My first outing with the CrystalVue LX8

I finally took my LX8 out for a test drive... My plan was to get a nice moon shot to get some practice focusing with the huge lens attached, but by the time I went out it had become fairly cloudy. I decided to take some shots anyway, and I'm pretty happy with the results (though I'm still going to try again when it's clear).

This image was not cropped, but I did apply a really slight unsharp mask. I might crop it a little at some point, but I kind of like the solitude that it exhibits in it's current form.

Anyway, enjoy, and please comment!

I LOVE the effect that the whipy clouds had,.. especially given that only through the moolite can those clouds be percieved.. :)

Very nice!

You say that's the first time you've used the Crystalvue LX8? How do you like it so far? I have been thinking about getting it...

I like it, but don't underestimate the amount of bulk and weight that it adds to the camera. It's nearly impossible to get a decent shot by hand-holding it.
That said, it's easy to set up, and what was attractive to me was ability to use the eyepiece to attach my G3 to my telescope... which I haven't done yet, but soon...
What I did for this shot (and the others I took last night) was use the lens' focuser to get as sharp as I could, then used the camera's manual focus to "fine-tune." I also used focus bracketing just as an extra "buffer." I'll know better if that's working well when I get a chance to take some shots without the clouds. :)
