The background is a TV screen, or there's a glass between the subject and the background?
Or is it a "panning" shot? Like, moving the camera a bit with a slow shutter speed but keeping the face centered?

Blurring of the background of an image. The subject is sharp and in focus, and anything behind it is blurred. Image has a shallow depth of field.

My best guess is the the subject (boy) was a decent distance from the background and the particular aperture you were using (I'm guessing as low as you could go) permitted the bokeh. To avoid this, set your camera to Av mode and use an aperture of f8. Might have trouble in low light...good luck!
