View Full Version : Time to rethink forum names?

Given the inevitable decline in the number of G-series owners now those cameras are no longer made, I suggest it is time to reconsider the naming of some of the forums.

Instead of differentiating by type of camera (presently small compact, G-series and EOS), it might be better instead to split these forums into into beginners (newbies), advanced amateurs (prosumers) and professionals.

Today, excellent photos can be taken of the majority of photographic situations and subjects by almost any of the Canon digicams of 5mp and over. For example, I would have no trouble doing most photo journalism work just with my A95 provided it wasn't sports or indoor concerts etc., and even then with some care one could usually come up with an acceptable shot.

Similarly, most cameras are capable of excellent macros even without extra lenses, and we have seen the proof of this in contests on both the G-series and small compact forums.

In short, I learned long ago that it isn't the camera that matters most, it is the photographer. A good photographer learns to cope with his or her equipment limitations and that's the way it has always been.

This is way too arbitary. It is a self defining split and so has no real relevance. The mix of experiences is very valuable.

I agree wholeheartedly, not that I cant still learn from a fellow nebbie but the experience is invaluable to us just getting started rather than seclude them from our reach.

Hmm if I were to suggest a change I would suggest that the split would be "DSLR's" and "Non DLSR's".

I can't see the sense in a change like that.
The small compact, G-series, EOS forums and the like have been grouped under 'Equipment Talk'. So those areas, I assume, were designed for people to discuss problems, seek advice or anything else pertaining to the person's particular camera type.
The 'Photo Sharing' forums are there for showing off your pics, regardless of what equipment you have.

Splitting into beginners and pros is, as condyk said, far too subjective. Plus that means you are segregating the experienced from those who want to learn.
To me that seem's similar to doing away with, say grades 1 to 7 in primary school and simply putting all the students in one big classroom and all the teachers in another.

If you do split it as the OP suggested, and even though I'm the world's oldest noob, can I please, pretty please be in the pro forum? I'll feel so much better.;)

What if, God forbid, an experienced photographer posted in the newbie section. Would that be photographic grooming?

Hmmm. Interesting idea that one. I wonder who would cause more mischief?
