this is a great photo. How did you focus on the particular portion and other portions are defocused?

I think I had it just does it on its own. Im pretty new too.

Macro and Supermacro modes will inherently give you a shallow depth of field. If you want to get the same effect w/o using the macro modes, you have to use a wide aperture, and zooming in on your subject helps too. :)
