Good morning all and happy friday.. the theme this week is darkness. Remember broad interpretations are allowed. so, if it's shooting a lowkey portrait or simply shooting at night, or shooting a composition that can be considered dark all are welcome... For any newcomers photos can be taken from sunup saturday through sundown sunday... Wait, i'm taking that back... just a little bit. Because the theme is darkness lets start it a little early.. so, photos can be taken starting from sundown friday night through sunday night at lets say midnight..Yeah, that should give anybody the extra nighttime hours that they might need... Good luck and happy shooting..

Well I planned to go out last night and do some graveyard horror style shots, but time kept ticking by and it was still light outside and then I started watching TV and then by the time it was really dark I felt tired ... erm ... wasn't that I was scared or anything :o

I think this could be a good theme as so many takes to be had on it, from the straight night shot to some out of the box interpretations :D

AS for the theme, My thoughts are boiling with ideas!

I also have some ideas for this.. But, ironically enough I am now waiting for the day to be over before I go out... not that that bugs me as it's a hundred degrees outside and not even noon yet... and Dave, I can't wait to see your 'creepy' graveyard photos...

Yuck! I feel for you. we've had a nice cool spell- 82 right now but the last couple nights have been down in the 50s. Today is the first day I've had ac on and that is mainly because of the humidity.

I did go out this am before sunup but struck out. Think it is going to have to be a studio shot of some kind just so I can slap the photo up on the LCD and then adjust focus after each shot.

Ok, first shot for me this weekend. The theme is darkness. Darkness holds fear for many. But fear of what? Well if you are a little King Prawn one fear is of a horrible death at the hands of a psycho chef >:(

Hope it don't give y'all nightmares

Well, I decided to go to a graveyard I've driven by a few times, Riverside Cemetery. A sign says it's "Denver's oldest, active cemetary," so I guess there may be some older *inactive* cemeteries. :) It was established in 1876 to replace the "dilapidated 1859 Denver City Cemetery." This probably seems downright modern to you folks overseas, but it's the best I could find.

I thought the clouds coorperated nicely:

http://images18.fotki.com/v328/photos/6/64353/1715345/graveyard2-vi.jpg

And I tried a conversion with this one:

And I'm gonna cheat this week and add a third, just for Tommy:

This was taken in Amsterdam a few eeks ago. I was told the XXX on their flags and such indicated the threats to the city; flood, fire and plaque.

On thought the skulls were pretty neat as well.

This is supposedly a really, really old entry.

For several weeks I couldn't participate in these threads because life got in the way. My mother was hospitalized, & I stepped in to help care for my Dad. I also hurt my arm so I couldn't even think about holding a camera. But things are beginning to look up now, so I sneaked out for an hour yesterday.

Beth -- My fav is your 1st one; like its composition & tone.

Kristina -- I always wanted to try star trials. How long was your exposure? Why are there no stars?

AccidentalArt -- Nice skulls!

Saravrose -- Like the mood of your 1st one.

MeatyO -- I'm enjoying the warm feeling of your shot.

My shot is hurried & makeshift & mediocre, but I enjoyed taking it. It was a welcome change of pace.

There have been some great shots posted thus far, I'll be back to comment. Wanted to get mine posted before we head to church.

Went to my brothers last night and shot some remaining fireworks from last weekend. Both are hand held since I didn't take the tripod:

Both taken with 300D and 28-75 Tamron

#1 Firework - f/32; 2 sec; ISO100

Becky- WOW on that #1! The tendrils are amazing.
Do you recall what the name was? ;) I need to put it on my shopping list; would look great on my BR or sitting room wall.

Beth- Very nice! 1 and 2 are excellent. I'll have to put that cemetary on my list for when I make it to Denver. I try to visit at least one in every town I spend more than a few hours in. Heck, sometimes just go to a town for the cemetary. :)

BLS- Very nicely composed shot. good job.

Linarms- That beach is gorgeous. Time for a walk and some sand between the toes.
I know I didn't get everyone, but the photos this week are great as usual. Now lets see if mine turn out.

What to shoot?? Reshoot some of the Orbs series or something from Hedy's Good Bath? (that whole "2 birds with 1 stone" thing) Both have a few frames that need it. . . . Nope I need a camera I can focus for both and bubbles for the one. hmmmmm.
To my delight, I heard rain during the night-- REFLECTIONS!! To my dismay, it was still raining at 4:30 so it had to be a from porch shot. retrieve the tripod from the truck, slap on the 100mm, focus to Infinity, compose without too many obstructions, and hope for the best. 3 different subjects, all somewhat acceptable, but you get Beacon.

Kristina -- I always wanted to try star trials. How long was your exposure? Why are there no stars?

It was not a very long exposure at all. The streak that you see is the space shuttle which was moving pretty fast. It only took it 2 minutes to cross the entire sky. I have done startrails before...I set the focus on infinity and use Bulb for the shutter and do it for about 20 or so minutes. Depends on how long you want the trails and how dark it is. I've never tried the hour or longer exposures. I couldn't do a long exposure that night because I live right outside of dallas so the light pollution was pretty bad plus there was nearly a full moon. :)

Home between church services so thought I would comment, (Curtis N and I are singing a duet for the special music at both services today) before heading back.

Condyk - The theme from Psycho is going through my head and at the same time my mouth is watering cause I love sea food:D

Kristina - Nice catch, I've seen the International Space Station but never the Shuttle, good for you.

Beth - Your conversions and composition really add to the mood in pictures, nicely done.

AccedentialArt - Have to agree, it is a very interesting door.

Sari - Nice perspective of the lamp post and I like the B&W for both pictures.

MeatyO - Very funny:lol: Also like the lighting or lack there of in #2 if you want I can send a couple of hampsters your way to spin the wheel in your generator.;)

Stewie-Lives - First welcome and congrats on the new lens, interesting perspective on your office area.

Barbara - I love how you isolated the color on this otherise grey scene. The composition certainly stirs up a lot of emotion and thought.

Kiwibloke - I think your timing was excellent on this shot, just enough of that deep blue of dusk in the background, IMHO.

Linearms - Welcome to you also, this picture is absolutely stunning from the light on the sand to the stars in the sky, simply beautiful.

Wu - I'm getting the Red X, maybe it will come up later. And thank you for your kind comment. Unfortuneatly I have no idea what the name was for this particular mortar. I just know for the money they burn in fireworks every year, I could buy some decent glass. To each their own hobby and they enjoy our pictures as we enjoy their show.

Oh - your pic showed up whilst I was typing. I really like it such a warm glow on a dreary night.

welcome.... :D :D .. were always thrilled for newcomers.. there are a lot of previous threads that Tommy has put up as a sticky.. It generally started as a kind of photo scavanger hunt between me and CDI... and has turned into a weekly event going into it's fifth month.. The things to keep in mind is that the themes are meant to be a jumping off spot, any and all interpretations are welcome and encouraged. as for the rules, their guidelines.. I'm kind of the one driving the bus and i'm fairly notorious for being a people pleaser... The most important part to me anyway, is that folks are shooting, looking around them for ideas, and showing creativity and forethought in their comps.. as to the original ideas as to being close to home and not using L glass... pretty much not an issue any longer, use whatever you have and go whereever you like to find your shots.. Have a great time and hope to see more from you next week...:D :D

My second contribution of the weekend in this darkness series.

Wandering through the third of my three local graveyards, and the only one I had still to visit, I came upon what was probably a murderers rubber glove, itself now dead and decaying just like to bodies of its victims

Kiwibloke -- Nice night shot. I wouldn't even attempt it.

liunarms -- Will you be framing that tonight or tomorrow night?

Becky -- Really like that 2nd shot with its warm streaks. Reminds me of an ink blot test.

Condyk -- Whatever you're on that's doing that to you imagination should be illegal.

I got lucky & was able to get out & about again today, so I have a 2nd shot to post. This was Bike Week in town. My ears are still ringing, but I had a good time. I was surprised by how old the bikers are. Guess the younger bikers are mostly on Hondas. The bikers I saw were middle-aged & older (some were REALLY old), and were on Harley Davidsons. Well, anyway, here's my shot: skull lamps to take away the darkness. No, I didn't buy one, a decision I might regret.

Thanks norton and becky!

condyk: "King Prawn" - Awesome interpretation! Very scarey, and grousomely depicted. Love it.
"Murder Glove" - How bizzare! It looks like a face peeled off. Very freaky looking.

Kristina: That's a great capture. How did you track where it was going to be?

eenorton: Eerie pictures. I like the first one the most. Looks like a movie poster.

AccidentalArt: How wierd. The skulls are really creapey.

saravrose: I really like the second one with the street lamp. Great light and shadow.

Meaty0: Love the duck! Very funny. The light in the portait is really nice.

stewie-lives: That's pretty impressive lens work. IS is a cool technology, isn't it?

BLS: Gravesite: Very pretty composition. I like the way you lined up the rows.

Skulls: I guess there's a niche for everything. They'd be perfect for a Halloween party!

kiwibloke: What an odd looking structure. It reminds me of the Space Needle in Seattle, Washington.

linarms: WOW. That is an amazing scene. I can't believe you were able to expose all those stars, and it's so strange how the waves even out over a long exposure. Beautiful!

Becky N: Now those are cool fireworks shots! It looks like electricity.

wu_wei0: What luck! That's a great shot. The reflections on the cement really give it a great quality.

Great job everyone! Very fun topic!

Love your interpretation. until you look really closely it feels as though it could be a shot of one of those old-time gentlemen gamblers/rogues. Step out of that room and be on deck of an old paddle steamer. Were there can-can dancers for entertainment? ;)

Dave- Lovely prawn shot. Looks mighty tasty. Is that cocktail sauce?

Kristina- Space shuttle huh? Pretty cool.

Beth- The sky definitely cooperated. Wonderful photos.

Sari- I love the style of smaller downtown cities/towns. They have such a warm inviting look to them.

Paul- Duckness, now that was funny. I had a similar idea for your second shot, but never got around to it.

Stewie- Interesting shot. Were you the only one "working" late?

Barbara- Doesn't look "makeshift" to me. Definitely a keeper.

Kiwi- That tower is cool looking. What function does it serve?

linarms- That is a fabulous shot. I just love it. Welcome.

Becky- very cool firework shots. I hope to get some next year. Had to go to bed early this year.

wu- very nice. I really like the green glow on the streets.

Dave again- You might not get this but is that OJ's glove?

Barbara again- I know a few of those "old" bikers. Don't ever call them old though.;) I think those skulls would freak me out if I walked into someone's home and they had one.

Crash- Where is the smoke?:D Poker shots always have cigarettes, even though I hate it. I am always the only non-smoker.

Dan- I don't think I want to be in those woods alone when the sun goes down.:)

As for my shots, well there are none. I took zero shots this weekend for a multitude of reasons. I was really clueless for the first time as well until last night. :) I KNOW!!! I was shocked because there was only one smoker in the group this weekend (it was a bachelor party). I did bring some cigars, but since we were in a non-smoking hotel, we decided not to light up. But I agree, I would have loved a little haze in that shot - I'm a sucker for volumetric lighting.

As for my shots, well there are none. I took zero shots this weekend for a multitude of reasons. I was really clueless for the first time as well until last night. My wife went to the store and decided to get a brownie mix, ice cream, and whipped cream for a sundae. I planned to take a shot for the theme, but it looked too good to wait.

LOL, I know that feeling. Definitely guilty of the same thing a few times.

That sweet, chocolatey, darkness would win out with me every time! Besides- with good lighting and careful composition it would get all melty and that would be a horrid waste. Had to use all those food shot tricks when I was shooting that stuff for catalogues and menus all those years ago. Not so tasty, but held up to a session quite nicely.

Hmmmm, not one chocolate shot, after all the talk about it earlier.

Dave- Lovely prawn shot. Looks mighty tasty. Is that cocktail sauce? Dave again- You might not get this but is that OJ's glove?

Cocktail Sauce ... I cut myself to produce that glutinous splat of blood sir

Not really ;) It was a simple mix of tomato paste and water, lightly blended to get the exact right consistency. I then 'curved' it a bit to get the dark red colour ;)

I do get the OJ gag. We have TV in England you know and many of us enjoy watching US comedy courtroom shows. Wasn't he featured on Judge Judy one week (or year!!) :p

Welcome Oz ... I must point out, as a business process consultant, that I can see that the workflow the ladies are engaged in is highly inefficient. Two of them could be made redundant or redeployed and the water would still reach the lower bowl perfectly on time, on budget and on quality. Any additional spillage cost would be easily recouped by this extra efficiency.

All - Throwing out an idea, not necessarily for this weekend but to ponder. Something I have been thinking about doing and thought it might work with this thread as well...

We could designate one weekend a month (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th), for a year, to take a picture of the same outdoor place every month as a study in the change of seasons. It could be a landscape, a tree, etc.

This would also free up 11 weekends where we wouldn't have to think of a theme or what to shoot. (Only the first weekend would we have to make that decision)

Feel free to comment good or bad on the thought of this little experiment.

Becky- I really like this idea. I do it for my study ('though for social and economic changes rather than art) and have done it once for a friend who was away from the states and missed autumn colors. It started with me mailing a shot to ask for help with a focus problem and turned inot a running joke. I kept it up, shot the tree weekly through spring (although he didn't get all those shots) and kept up the storyline. I don't know about him but I enjoyed watching the change of season and the neighborhood. The story brough me plenty of smiles as well. I should go back and see it in summer.

Kiwi- That tower is cool looking. What function does it serve?

Sorry to take a while to reply - it's been busy and now we have visitors...

That tower is known as the Telstra Tower - Telstra is a telco here in Australia. I have some daylight shots of the tower that shows all the communication dishes and aerials - it is the major communication tower for the city of Canberra and one of the more obvious landmarks there.

Thanks for the comments.

The idea is good. Kind of like the photo a day. though I don't have anything close by I would want to photograph once a month.

I think if this were to be done it would require a better way of displaying the photos than a thread. Since the purpose is to show how season changes all previous photos should be easily available.

great idea Becky and I really like it.. I do agree with Tommy that all photos should be able to be displayed, maybe a gallery similar to the one for nifty?... but, as a way of encorporating the shots into themes for the photo day is nice.. it will give everybody a small break from composition hunting.. I do think that the shots don't necessarily have to be identical each month but just of the same area showing the different colors, textures etc..

I don't think we need a solution to not having shooting ideas as we have plenty and always manage to choose one. I doubt that will change anytime soon. Anyway, as an idea it has its own merits. On my last big trip we took shots of each other every week for over 6 months I think. That was really interesting. I still can't quite believe I dyed my hair blonde one time and also wore a cowboy hat another

So, shooting the same thing every month would be fine by me. We need to be careful of wandering too far from the original item we first shoot or it loses relevance: just another shot from some general area. It is the changes in the specific 'thing' that seems to make it interesting to me. That would need some thought. Changes could be in the object, when we shoot, how we shoot, what we shoot it with, etc.

I also agree with Tommy that a means of displaying those changes in a simple way would enhance the idea. Again, danger is point of the exercise becomes lost unless there is an easy compare and contrast of ones own images.

cfpackerfan
11th of July 2006 (Tue), 14:20

The problem is presentation. I don't think a monthly thread will work very well because You really need to see each contributors photos isolated so You really see the transition.

So here is a thought. First I need to say that there is no guarantee that this can be done. Because we are at a stage where each new forum is evaluated very carefully. And new forums need to be warrented to be created.

Anyway my idea is this: One new forum. Each member can only have ONE thread. Each member can only post in his/her own thread. Each post should only be the photo and maybe time when it was shot. There would be an issue for those that do not have own hosting due to the 2 attachments per thread limit. Discussion could take place in a monthly thread in this forum. Also Pekka may not like the idea since these threads would practically be a gallery (special one granted but still a gallery which Pekka do not want here).

Anybody is free to suggest that in the forum talk if they want to.

First let me thank you all for your interest in the idea.

Tommy, I had wondered about the best way to see the changes from month to the next. Unfortunately I'm not very astute to the various methods for displaying our photos other than attaching through the thread or linking to our web site, a process I was finely able to do without Curtis N's help this past weekend. So I'll go with whatever those who are more knowledgable suggest.

I'm not really interested in 'seasons' but I like the bigger idea. I don't see a need to restrict it.

Agree, Condyk, the subject could be anything that changes over the course of a year. My thought was to capture what we see as subtle changes that in reality happen quite quickly.

But, as for next weekend what would we like to shoot?...

Well, Sari, I have no ideas...Curtis N and I have a family reunion, not ours, to shoot this weekend. Hopefully I'll be able to fit the theme in somehow,:) whatever it might be.

No it is pretty easy.

The trick with this will be management of the userid and password. Either 2-3-4 people should be entrusted to upload all photos or the password/userid should be exchanged via PM. The best will be if a service have a master user with the option to create subuser so if the subuser is compromised the masteruser is still under control of one or 2 persons here. But I don't know if such a service exists. I can check the services I have tested (see link in my signature).

just an idea and y'all feel free to tell me i'm nuts.. but, what about a processing... show us the before and after of a composition.. why we make the choices to process a shot a certain way and how we think it improves/enhances a composition... it would give us a free reign to shoot whatever it is we want to shoot.... maybe a way to explore how the creative process doesn't end when the shutter goes off.... Now, I know the point is to shoot (heck I made up the rules).. but, there is a whole other side of photography that we hear over and over that those new to photography have issues with... Newbies feel as though processing is 'cheating' and shouldn't be necessary if we take a photo correctly, but I know from experience that the things we do to tweak, correct improve a photo can be just as important as taking the shot in the first place. this could work for the minimalists approach as well as the saturation junkies... anyway, y'all tell me what ya think......

I like the processing theme for this week. It is certainly an area that I need to learn a lot more about, and I'm always interested in seeing how and why others do what they do to get some of the images I see here.

On the "time-lapse" idea -- Bryan Peterson suggests a similar exercise in Understanding Exposure. Pick a subject -- any subject -- and take repeated shots of it weekly for a year. He suggests shooting looking North, East, South, West and in the morning, mid-day and evening.

For a POTN weekend project, you could shoot the same subject at different times of day to see how different qualities of light affect the outcome of your shot.

BLS

About the processing idea, if I'm understanding it correctly -- It's okay, but doesn't excite me. My keyboard says it's looking forward to it, but my lens says it's going to feel neglected. Guess I've always enjoyed being behind a lens more than being behind a keyboard.

Maybe we could have a 2-part "combo" weekend. 1) We pick and shoot a theme as usual. Then, we select one theme shot and 2) post it two ways -- before & after processing.

USIng DOF is such an art. We can all use a large or small aperture, if light is for or against us, but how many really think about how DOF can be used creatively before we take the shot or how Bokah can enhace the impact of a shot? I think it would be a nice 'practice' to make conscious use of DOF and then present perhaps the before shot and the after post-processing version. Some of the purists feel you must never fiddle once the shot is framed, but I think that is twaddle tho' they can do what they prefer themselves. It depends to me. Most of my shots are shot knowing how I will crop and PP them afterwards.
