70-200 f/2.8L actually. I love that lens! Tomorrow will be my first wedding with the 24-70L as a replacement for the Tamron 28-75. Between the 28-75 and the 70-200 I think 85% of the wedding is covered. If I had to though, I could probably shoot the whole wedding with the 50 1.4. Love that 50. We'll see how the 24-70L does for me tomorrow.

I have the Tamron version of the 24-70 but I really like primes lenses. I use my 50/1.4 lens a lot but this year, it's gotta be my 85/1.2 that does most of work.

17-40 f4L but you have to remember it is on a 30D so there is a crop F.O.V. factor

17-55 2.8... though I've only acquired it recently and have only done one wedding with it so far. It's a great lens. I shot the formals in high afternoon sun and the supposed flare problem wasn't even an issue... unless you are shooting facing the sun... which you probably shouldn't anyways. ;)
you can do the entire wedding with that one lens if you wanted.
a reasonable second is the 70-200 IS

I often shoot into the sun, it gives the people a nice hair light and stops them squinting into the sun. If you put the sun to the side of them one side of their face gets blown out. What do you do?

Tim, I like to shoot into the sun as well, but even more so I like to put that sun on one side of their face and use a reflector to fill in the other side.

I have the 24-70 on one body and the 24-105 on the other. Before getting the 24-105 the 24-70 was used almost exclusively.

I set up one or two 430EX slaves to fill the dark side for a large group, or a reflector for just the couple (if I have an assistant around). Otherwise I use the slave for the couple too. Use pocketwizards to trigger them. There's a new version out called the Plus2 which is a transceiver like their Multimax system but at half the cost! Best value there. I just find the more light there is on the people, the less blown out the sky is.

Interesting. You have almost the same focal range covered twice. Why do you like this rather than, say a super wide or a tele on one of the bodies? ...just curious.

Yep you have to ballance the light. I don't often bother with lighting groups outside, I only do it if we're inside, in that case I use studio lights.

Wow this is interesting...
So far the leaders are:
1. 24-70L with 7 votes.
2. 17-55 IS with 4 votes.
3. 24-105 IS with 3 votes.
4 17-40 with 2 votes.
I figure the big advantage of the 17-55 would be the low aperture with IS, however the 24-70L is in the lead. I take it that the 24-70L does a good job of accurate focusing? I also wonder if the 24-70L would be wide enough on a XT, 20D or 30D to be my main wedding lens.

I shoot with a 24-105 on an XT and it's wide enough for most shots. Pays to have the 10-22 as well tho ...

I use a 28-70L and on a 30D it's wide enough for probably 75%+ of what I shoot - but a second body with a wider lens comes in handy.

My primary lens was the Tamron 28-75, but started to find some pre-ceremony shots where I needed the wider lens. I also had a cake cutting shot where there just wasn't room.
Now I'm using the Canon 17-55
Tamron 28-75 (love it)

A very interesting selection of lense overall!! My conclusion is that any lense between 18-85mm will do the job, according to this thread depending how creative you are and the effect you are looking for.

I have to add another vote for the 70-200mm f2.8 IS.
But I am thinking an 85mm F1.2 could take it's place once I get it.

the lensbaby 2.0 never comes off my camera during a wedding!
...just kidding, i shoot all wedding type events with a borrowed 24-70f2.8L on an XT. there are a couple instances when i want a wider lens, but i have always made it work. Maybe if i ever use it as a source of income, ill get wider coverage.

hard to answer, at first I thought.. Hands down 24-70, (which is true for groups etc,)
but anything ceremony related is about 90% 70-200IS,
but If I could only go with one, it would be the 24-70 because you can't always back up enough

Tamron 28-75 for 80% of shots. Canon 75-300 III USM for zooming in under good light conditions (outside ceremonies).
