Okay - here we go - let's beat the July 2005 Spend-a-thon of US$116,000... and December 2005 Spend-a-thon of US$272,000!!!!!!!! (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=84295)

The spend-a-thon will run to the end of 6th August. I can imagine some lucky people may be surprised by what they buy whilst on holiday or whatever.... and then only find time the next day to post the news on this thread.

What can we do? US$150,000?
Sky's the limit for a new total of POTN member retail therapy in the next 30 days??

Here's the fine print from the July 2005 thread:

Pls wander over to this thread during this month every time you spend money on photography gear.

Thats globally. All brands, A to Z including computer parts for photography processing....

Please post your spending in USD to make it easy.
( Do your own currency conversions easily at http://www.xe.com )

How much are we spending in July 2006? Bored minds want to know. This'll be a summer survey... and then -by way of contrast- we'll have another December 'Santa' survey!

There's no need to mention much except the total $$ involved and the date I guess. Keep the nitty gritty to yourself if you want... give a ballpark figure to the nearest $25 or so - do we spend $50k a month here? $75k?

[ running daily total will exclude bulk purchases for colleges, advertizing houses, news teams etc... but you can still showoff here! I'm looking for a rough total of personal use gear purchases of POTN members all around the world ]

savarose, I have a DB progie called Bookcat (http://www.fnprg.com/bookcat/)(I collect books) that I've used to do a home inventory DB. I made a report in it to total up all of my photography purchases over the last few years. Now that was scary. This was done for insurance purposes and the real scary thing was the wife had to co-sign it. Good thing my purchases are above board. Anything we buy at home goes into it. ie even a toaster.

BTW check out the the link I've included. The author has some cool software for Books, Music CD's MP3, DVD etc.

Interesting bit of trivia for y'all ... those Gitzo 1325 legs converted to Australian $$ are ~ A$745. They sell locally (http://www.photocontinental.com.au/ishop/stock/search?keywords=g1325&supplierCode=&search=Search&category=P090) for A$1,470!
... and local retailers wonder why we buy from the US.

Mat.

Mat.... that is a serious set of legs! What are you gonna hold up? A 500L?

And you're right about some A prices. And tripods are safe - its not like it could have focus issues or something and have to back on warranty! Thats why I got my legs in the US too.

Mat.... that is a serious set of legs! What are you gonna hold up? A 500L? Possibly :)
Maybe later this year, anyway.

I've always preferred to have a big/solid tripod.

Anyway, I also started down the slippery slope of a changeover to arca-swiss today, with a visit to the Really Right Stuff website:

B82 lens plate (US$55)
2 x B86 lens plates (US$110)
BGE4-L L-plate for my 5D+grip (US$183)
B2-Pro/L clamp (US$87)
Some odds & ends (US$16-60)
Freight (US$50)

Total: US$501.60

Ballhead wasn't in stock ... bugger.
Soon adds up, doesn't it?

Cheers,
Mat.

Well, I'm not sure if this counts.... I was going to sell my EF-S 10-22 for $800 CAD ($720 USD), but instead I decided to trade for a 17-40 F4L? In the interest of beating last year, can we assume that I sold it and spent the money on the new lens?

Also, I bought an EF-S 17-85 IS used off here for $415.

So my total if the 10-22 counts is $1135 USD.

I'm not sure if it has been mentioned here, but if you go to google.com and type in the amount in your native currency, followed by the abbreviation for the currency (ie, 500 CAD for Canadian Dollars, or 500 GBP for British Pounds). Hit search (or enter), and it will do the conversion to USD. Or you can convert to any currency by entering it like 500 CAD to GBP. A little easier to use than XE I think :)

Well, here's this month's transactions in Aussie dollars:

I could have gotten the 100-400, too, but I wouldn't have had enough length for what I like to shoot (birds). A true 400 isn't long enough. With a 1.6x, I was getting 620 on the 400. I couldn't stand to lose 220, and I can't afford the 500,600, or even the 300-800 (sigma).

Ronald S. Jr.
13th of July 2006 (Thu), 22:58
Yes, keeping the 20D, but only because it would have no resale value (to me). I keep the 20D as a fail safe. However, I'm not keen on it, as I've noticed the difference in focus accuracy and keeper rate with the 30D, 1DMkII, and soon to be 5D. I'm not interested in the bigma for the 20D. If I were, I'd spend a couple hundred more and get a 100-400.

drparker

It's funny the DR. thing pops up every once in a while. It's from an old Novell login, first two initials from the first name plus last. I’m really a computer geek.

It's a weekend thing 2nd day "intermediate class" of the Digital Days workshop from this link http://www.photoworkshop.com/double_exposure/publish/DigDaysWorkshop.shtml I'm at that wierd stage, I've out grown the entry level classes and not good enough for the serious stuff. All the local colleges seem to have is either for P&S digital or black and white film and the dark room.

 I got the 85 f1.8 for my 300d, used it and went wow! Then wondered how much better would that lens be with that 5d I've wanted since announce. so.......
Got the 5d used it with the 85 and said "wow! Great choice" Then used the 28-135 with the 5d and said "you need faster better glass" thus the 24-70L. It's viscous cycle. But now my daughter gets to use the 300d with 28-135 instead of a P&S.
