View Full Version : Goodwood, poor weather and worse lens choices

Some action from the Friday of the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Unfortunately, I chose convenience over quality deciding to take the Canon EF 100-400L rather than the Sigma 120-300mm. I didn't fancy carrying the big lump of a Sigma about all day long. Bad mistake. The weather turned wet, dull and at times pretty dark forcing me to high ISO and making the dear old 100-400L's low light focusing limitations painfully obvious. Oh well, my mistake. I managed to salvage the odd shot.
#1 Waiting for the off.... there seems to be a disturbing teddy bear theme going on in motorsport this year.

#2 Very pretty Jaguar on the hill

#5 For those of you that prefer your action on two wheels

#6 Former Formula 1 and Champ Car champion Nigel Mansel (aka "the Bore from Brum"). They did do an interview with him but I nodded off.

#7 That'd be an Aston Martin then....

Glenn,
The Mansell JPS shot is nice, but that Aston shot in #7 is just superb. Great sense of speed and the flare off the headlamps really adds a lot to the shot.
Cheers,
Simon.

The D50 looks to be one of the later Ferrari type ones, with the side panniers integrated into the bodywork more.
Lancia has these more seperate, and were fuel tanks, Ferrari when they were effectively given the Lancia F1 team in 1956/7 after Ascari's death, continued with the basic design but then started tweaking it themselves.
This is actually one of the last from a short series of replicas. Anthony Bamford (Mr. JCB digger) had some spare engines and a plan was hatched to use these up in a series of very expensive, but very authentic replicas (even pulling original craftsmen out of retirement)

Nice shots, Glen. Even if you had to use the "Donkey's D!@k" :-)
Did you see the engine in that Connaught ? 2.1 litre V10 or something like that.
So which one was the ugliest car ?

 Me too. The annoying thing was that I knew the Sigma was sitting just out of reach in the back of my car...

Tsk. Calling that nice Mr Mansell nasty names when he took the time to wave at you ! ;)
All very nice Glenn but a JPS Lotus will always get my vote. As for your lens woes, i actually walked back to the car to get the Sigma today....

No gain without pain Glenn, you'll just have to start carrying the Sigma with you.
I was wondering if Mansell senior will turn up at Croft to look after the two little Mansells. If he does I'll down a few Red Bulls to keep me awake should he end up being interviewed.
The cuddly toy thing has been going on for a couple of years now, bears, monkeys, pigs, you name it, if it is fluffy and stuffed and hanging around a car or marshals post somewhere (no reading anything else into that statement).
I'm in the middle of a weekend off. Snet dropped to 4 races and Cadwell doesn't look too exciting either, Catching up on some work and looking through Mr Skinners DTM stuff which is outstanding.

Still nice shots, you can tel you have experience of the hilll as there are some good angles there.
I did take the 120-300, however I was on a promise not to be hanging off it all day.
Being resigned to the grandstand, my shots were very limited (and mostly poor)
Loved the helicoptor ride though !
I went to Cadwell on the Saturday, and got sunburned, some great racing going on!

Since I neglected to comment last time through... I will do so properly now. Nice shots. Yeah... I wish I knew what the right companion lens to the 120-300 was. Even my 70-200 seems a little doggie compared - I am just really used to shooting with it. This last weekend though I was really wishing Canon had a 24-105 f2.8... could have really used one for the paddock. Nice shots.... well done. It is such a nice venue - I will need to make it over there before my dad moves back to this side of the Atlantic. Cheers.
