I am wondering if anyone has experienced my situation with the 20D. At the last 2 weddings, I have noticed that something has happened to completely shut down the readings on my 20D. Thank the Lord, I have been able to re-establish working order after removing the battery and then slipping it back in. It only seems to happen when I am in a busy mode of shooting. I wonder if I am just pressing focus too much, although I didn't have trouble when shooting basketball games. Huh!
I have another long wedding tonight, so of course I am praying! And yes, my back-up camera is always packed. Thought I would throw that out there to hear some feedback.
Thanks,

This always seems to happen to me too. When you are super busy and shooting photo after photo and putting the camera through some serious duty, it just seems to lock up. Happens at least once every wedding. Like you said, it usually just takes a battery removal to fix it, though once it's taken a lens removal too. This happens on BOTH my 20D and 30D. Kinda strange. Always carry two bodies with you at all times just in case. Both cameras have updated firmware too.

Yes, I had exactly the same thing with my 20D shortly after putting a battery grip on it. I contacted the local Canon authorised dealer and they informed me that a batch of 20D grips were faulty and caused this to happen (exactly as you described)
I sent my body and grip off to them, the grip turned out to be OK and not one of the batch affected, but they replaced the digital card in the body....been fine since.

I had this yesterday. I was shooting with a 20D/grip and 70-200 F2.8 IS, the aperture goes back to 00 and it won't do anything. I just put it down and picked up the other one until I had time to look at it. When I did turned it off and removed the lens, put it back, and it worked again.
I wish I had time to send all my gear back to Canon to be checked and calibrated, but I can't afford to have all my gear away at once.

Only happened to me once. I was shooting really quickly as well. I had a bride spinning around in her dress and her vail was swooshing in her face. It was really cool but the camera got dizzy or something and said, "I quit!!"
So, did the above, grabbed the other 20D and kept shooting. Fixed it at the reception by removing the battery.

Just a question to those who suffered the lockup, was your firmware updated as advised by LuisE? Cheers
Reason I ask is my 20d's a little under 20mths and I have never had my firmware updated (Version 1.0). Yet, I've had no lockup problems what-so-ever. Perhaps if I updated my equipment maybe? sorry to jump on your wagon CHPhoto

My 20D experienced the same lockup while rapidly taking pictures. No error messages just a frozen display, even after turning off the camera. I had to remove the battery to re-set the camera.
I have just updated the firmware from 2.02 to 2.03. I will let you know if it continues or the update solved the problem.

The firmware update is unlikely to solve the problem. To fix it send it to Canon and describe the problem, that can sometimes fix it up.

I had it happen to my 30D at a wedding about a month ago. Was shooting the bride & groom walking away from me, and took about 4 or 5 shots and went to take some vertically and nothing. The top LCD said Err1 or something like that. Just turned it off and back on and it was fine for the rest of the day, and has been since.
I guess we have to remember that these cameras are really more like a computer than a camera.

i find this only happens to me when i have the battery grip on. i think after a while the connections get worn and any loosening of the grip can cause the camera to get stupid. but thats just been my experience.

They do run on DOS...
I will be bringing a manual film backup to the first wedding I shoot.

Hello. I'm brand new to this forum but I wanted to chime in this thread because I've had similar experiences with my 20d. This has happened to me twice before when the camera was under heavy use. And just like beaconlightboy mentioned, the only unusual thing I noticed each time was that the battery grip had come slightly loose. I just tightened it and restarted the camera and everything was back to normal. (The last time it happened was right in the middle of a wedding shoot when the B&G were about to cut the cake – talk about panicking)
