I saw this guy coming out from the soil at about 8:00pm. I kept checking on this guy, but it didn't have any sign of emerging until 11:00pm. Here are some pics that I took. The last pic was taken at about 1:00am and I just couldn't stay awake to see further development. Anyway, hope you enjoy the series ;)

Thanks Melvyn! This is very common here as well, but it's only my first time observing this. I usually just see the empty shell  The next thing I would like to observe is emerging dragonfly :), but I think I need to wake up very early in the moring

What a great series, do they hibernate in the soil, or are they born there and come up and shed their skin. I have to agree on the excelent wing colour :)

Hi Mark, these guys actually actively live underground. They can live underground for as many as 17 years before they come up to the surface. Sadly, once they come up, their life span is about a couple of weeks :( Thanks! :)

Amazing series, amazing pictures, did I mention the series is amazing? :)
I don't usually look in the Macro forum as macro for the sake of macro does nothing for me.
You certainly used it well to show that process.

Beautiful!!!! Love how you caught the stages it went through. We had a huge cicada showing here in MD, a couple of years ago... I miss their sound... it was so mesmerizing.

Thanks, Waussie! I am glad that I saw this process first-handed. Emerging is one of the most exciting thing to see ;)

Thanks, Elphaba! I think this guy came out a bit early as they usually come out in August. I don't see another cicada around :) Thanks again!

Thanks, Dave! I certainly agree with you that we don't see this often. I think I am just lucky enough to spot this guy coming out from the ground. On top of that, I actually did not expect to see cicadas around this time of the year, as they normally come out in August. :)

Wonderful shots, Leo. This series brings back childhood memories from 50 years ago. We would catch as many of these coming out of the ground as we could and set them on our screen door. Brown (orange yellow when wet) were common, the blue green ones were quite rare. I remember thinking those were some of the prettiest colors I had ever seen. I felt my memory must have exagerated that, but your captures bring it all back, including the three orange red "eyes". Thanks so much for sharing.

Mark - I am glad that you enjoyed the series. I wish I could do what you did when you were a kid. It must be really fun doing this. If I see that many here, I probably would still do what you described ;) Thank you for sharing your experience ;)

Very impressive... Great follow thru on the shots capturing its progress from the larva stage to adult (i think thats what one would call it). The images are very crisp clear and the color is great.

Thanks for your very kind words :) I was lucky enough to witness this process. I wish I could stay even later to capture the moment when it was ready to fly away, but I was just sleepy ;) Thanks again!
