I'm not sure of the lens. I tried for 4 days to get a look at it, but he was very secretive about letting anyone see his equipment. He stayed away from anyone with a camera

He's using a Nxxxxxx camera. That must be why he's chimping so much! LOL

Yeah I did too, but I think it may be the hood that makes it seem that way. Or I could be totally wrong :P
Also if you look at the back, it's got a white adapter which could be a TC of some sort on it.

If you are shooting for money and not chimping, its just kinda dumb. Theres a ton of info on that LCD that can save your butt BEFORE you go home and find out. It's a different concept than the "hold it out and use it to frame" P&S mentality.
Trying to look cool isn't nearly as satisfying as a $50.00 shot

Agreed! But if you can't understand a histogram well it is not much use. What does that flashing screen mean anyhow? Man am I ever snapish today must be those innoculations. ;)

Actually, he was using burst mode for the jumps and taking out the shots that were repetitive, But I thought is was funny to take a photo of him looking at the screen.
He comes out from Italy to shoot the meets out here. I'd love to have that job!

Is it considered a *sin* on this board if you review your shots in the field??? Man, you guys are pros!
I just did 2 days of kid's equestrian event. Lots of burst mode 5fps. I only have 3.5GB in cards with me... (no portable drive yet).
The weather also keeps changing, cloudy, dark, sunny so I have to keep checking if I'm still okay.
So I had to review my shots, and if I know I won't use the shot (i.e. If I think the parents won't buy that picture), I'll delete it right away.
Save the space for the money-shots! :)

I do it constantly! If I am blowing through shots, esp in burst mode, and I know I missed the shot, or missed my mark on the focus, I immediatly delete it.
Also, when shooting events with different skaters, I have a program handy and mark down the last photo # next to their name, so that when I process them I can organize them by name. Saves me having to go through and look at each one trying to figure out, "Who is this, oh yeah I think i saw them over here somewhere" Helps a lot, especially when they are performing in more than one event.

Not a sin,. but there is a certain amount of humor that goes along with it,.
the term that was coined some years ago is "chimping" and that alone makes it funny IMHO :)

It's more a game than anything... trying not to be "caught" chimping,. and or catching somone else in the act http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2hdzu/pics/chimp.gif

i just chimp the histogram (really) to see if my exposure is correct. You really can't tell anything from the screen anyhow.

I quickly scroll back to verify the starting number for a person, then look quickly for anything that is extremely obvious as a non-fixable shot. remove it, then verify the last capture number. I might shoot over 1000 shots in a couple of hours so I don't need the bad shots taking up space. Also, if their coach or parent is nearby, i'll let them see a shot, esp if they are doing jumps, and I actually catch them in the air! LOL

Great tips! I checked out your website. Cool stuff! *no pun intended*
Check out my new website... my 2nd job! Photoshoot last Sat/Sunday.
http://lightningbugimages.com/proofs/MyProofs.asp?ProofID=6
This is just a side-business I've fallen into, because I was volunteered to be the photographer... but the other parents/grandparent have no qualms of making big orders. Of course... it's their kids! :) (well, my kid is #446 and is part of the event too.)
I have another gig this August and by next month, I want to get a 70-200 f2.8 IS! My f4-5.6 zoom suffers a lot when it's not bright and sunny outside.

That is basically the same way I got going in skating photography. If you get the 70-200/2.8, you will absolutely LOVE it! I have it without the IS and it's a fantastic lens. For me the IS is not a usable feature, but for your shots it would be a great benefit. I just wish it didn't cost quite so much.

I noticed that you're using SmugMug... how do you like it? Which plan are you on? That "cropping" tool they have just blows me away. Now I can have the buyers do the work!
Yeah, I think I will have to spring for that f2.8 lens... with or without IS, but probably I'll get the IS and just be done thinking about it.
In my work, I can't use Flash... it *might* spook the horse and you don't want a spooked horse suddenly bucking with a small kid on it's back!

Thank you for the compliment about the site. Yes I am happy with SmugMug. I have the professional account. As for the lens, the IS would be a great benefit for you, esp since you are not using flash. That extra couple of stops will allow you some great captures. I rarely have the oppurtunity to shoot any slower than 1/250th so the IS would not come into play. I guess that is a benefit for me, at least dollar wise. LOL

I believe it has been pointed out on this board before (and in other contexts as well) that 95% of us chimp and the other 5% are liars.
The real question is: Does "just checking the histogram" count as chimping?
