View Full Version : A film body to compliment my D30...?

Recently, I started looking at another film body to replace my older *toyish* rebel and to compliment, not replace, my D30. Particularly, the ELAN 7 has been the one I'm most interested in for the price and the features it offers (similar to the D30).

Please let me know what your opinions are on this matter and if you have any other recommendations. Thank you very much.

Kind Regards

The Elan 7 would be an excellent choice. If you want nearly identical features to your D30, you might look for a used Elan II, which is more like the D30 with three focus zones and similar zonal metering. The Elan 7 is a bit more sophisticated with 7 focus zones and more detailed zonal metering, in both cases like the 10D.

I own an Elan IIe, and it is much better made than any of the Rebels, though I would not knock it around like professional equipment. The Elan 7 has a better build quality, but it still isn't really a pro camera. If the D30 is rugged enough for you, though, then so will be either of the Elans.

Ditto for what Rdenny wrote, I still use my Elan II for backup, shooting B&W @ other specialty films such as E-6 and Infrared. You should be able to find them in local pawn shops or even camera shops since people are trading them in for the digital cameras.

Me too! I'd go for the Elan 7 (if I lived in the States but over here in the UK it's called the EOS 30e.

I have one to complement my EOS 10D and can confidently say it's a superb camera.

Cheers,
Barry

Elan 7 or Elan 2 (the 2 is mor elike the D30 and the Elan 7 is more like the 10D) both great values! (after a DSLR's price all film SLRs seem a great value! :D)

If you really don't think you'll ever use it,. and really don't want to spend even the cost of the Elan,. you might look at the RebelTi.

Thank you for replying, all of you!

I will probably continue looking for a used (mint) Elan 7 over the Elan II only because I am sure that I will find some trite excuses to upgrade to a 10D or better later down the road. :)

Just to follow up on this comment... ... In addition to my 10D, I have an Elan IIE. I have been reluctant to try infrared film with the Ellan, because I was told the LED that counts/positions the frames would fog the bottom 1/3 of the frame. Do you have any experience with this?

Oop's I slipped, I use the Elan II for negative films, E-6, Litho & B&W your right about the sensor. For Infrared I use my Ftb with Kodak HIE set @ 200 ISO.
Thanks for bring it to my attention.
