This is an image from a great blue heron rookery near Burntside Lake about five miles from Ely. As you can see, it's in a stand of red pines, and viewing/shooting conditions were not the best. Nevertheless, even through red pine boughs, the personality and fundamental primitivism of herons stands out.

And that's not all that stands out. If you 've ever shot under a GBH rookery, or a rookery of any large shore or water bird, for that matter, you know the world is full of carking raspy calls and caking rotten chunks of doo doo. It was one of the places I was going to take my last photo excursion client before a loon excursion opened up. I think he was a lot happier with the loons, eh? ;)

Canon 20D, Canon 100-400L IS at 400mm, iso400 at f8.

Az2: No, I think rather it was a USO (unidentified staggering object) as he fought to remain upright and steady among the gooey groundbound mess so he could shoot the excreters.

Thanks Gary. Long time, no talk. Good to see you again.

Great capture Steve. Looks like their eyes are waiting for fresh fish.

I thought Swans had long necks but here we see even the young Herons can stretch.
Good shots.
