View Full Version : 4. (The "don't be a jerk" language)

I never thought that this would have to be codified, but here is a suggestion for an additional line in the rules, listed under the "4. (The "don't be a jerk" language)" subsection.

Do not post your own shots on someone else's thread (Don't hijack!). If you want to share your photo on the same topic, start your own thread and link to it. The exception would be if the thread's starter specifically requests your photos, as in, "Please show me your best baseball shot..."

In just the last couple days, I have seen 3 or 4 threads starting with someone sharing a photo. Further down, someone else posts a similarly themed photo, and most of the rest of the thread is about the second poster. Sure, sometimes someone would say to the starter, "Oh, yeah, and your shot was good too..." Seems kind of inconsiderate to come in and take over someone's thread.

Any thoughts?

True... But that's thread hijacking surely. Already in the rules! :)

I don't see it. Could you point out what section it is in?

Thanks,

I guess you could add a post to get it back on topic?

I do think the mods do a great job in monitoring these things if they go too far.

It's a bit like a conversation, it goes where it goes. Some people just post and never respond in the thread. If it pushes it to the top and keeps getting responses, is that so bad? The real tragedy is no responses whatsoever.

I belong to some av forums and the level of juvenile insults is astounding. This forum has a level of maturity that also translates to friendliness.

I also belonged to a certain ameteur photographic site, where the forum is run in an autocratic way. One person had the say in whether someone could post or not! I have been pulled up by mods in the past (and probably will again), but I have never had a post deleted without any explanation.

Anyroadup, I am sure it was just a coincidence there were a few together and it seemed like an apedemic!

hehe yeah there should be a potn opera...:)

not sure i agree with OP though, if a photo is good then 99% of the time it will get noticed and it will stay at the top of the board for a while. if its not then it will soon be on page two but if someone can add something to the mix and bring it back to a point of conversation then surely thats not a bad thing?

on another topic check out my shot of a glider.

Yes and then someone piggybacks by posting a photo of their own thus highjacking the thread. If OP has not asked for other to post similar photos I consider it rude to post photos in other members photo share threads.

well personally i wouldnt mind. a lot of my posts dont spend much time on page 1, some have barely any replies - which is fine! but if someone was to chip in with a little story and an image then thats fine by me if it gets me up to the top again.

edit: and until someone complains about someone posting in their thread then is it really an issue? has anyone actually complained about it happening to them or are we assuming it ticks them off:)

To my knowledge nobody have complained about it but that dosen't mean there is free rides to be had on this account. Some simply won't complain even if they do not like it.

I think a lot of the posters are new and don't realize this isn't acceptable. As for those who post a question but no photo, I don't see anything wrong with posting an image with exif data that answers a specific question.
I also think there have been a number of new members lately who are just down right rude and purposely post inflammatory comments to get an argument started. I reported one of them twice the other day. He made a big announcement in a thread that he had been asked to tone it down and was leaving as a result. I also had a poster send me a PM last night asking for a response to smart aleck remarks he had made to me and others in a particular thread.

Yes that would be rude, Rad.Sort of like jumping on someone elses thread and blaming them for your misfourtunes;)

Rad, I think your point is well taken.
It is both bad manners and poor forum etiquette to hijaak a thread in that manner.
You are correct that as it stands the term Hijaak is not in the rules themselves,. it being such an otherwise understood matter of etiqutte.

Not sure how long it will take (or if ) to amend the rules to include this specifically,. In the mean time,. reports of such posts from the thread's OP will handle such cases quickly.

Bottom line,. it is up to the OP to decide of his thread has been hijaaked or not,
Anyone feeling there thread has been hijaaked should not hesitate to use the "report post" function.
And or a simple note from the OP within the thread to educate the newb might work fine as well.

Precisely why Mods won't tend to take action on such hijaaks unless the OP requests it.

I second the original idea.

It is disheartening when sb posts a photo of the same theme which is way better.

New members will probably not imperil their standing by posting a complaint.
