Ah its intresting when you stop and look at things you see every day.

Seen as you asked, here's some honesty.

The first pic: Question - Is there anything about the pic that makes it interesting? Answer - yes, but the only thing I can see is that the right hand upper third is being filled. Using the rule of thirds often helps to create interest. However, that is the only intersting thing in the whole photograph. There is no decent foreground, bar some weak light reflections. Although the background is filled, what about it? In this pic, there is only one thing that catches you eye, and that one thing isn't all that remarkable.

The second pic: Foreground and background aren't really factors to consider in this photograph, the main subject takes up much of the photograph. The focal point is obviously the tanks. The low angle you shot at gives the a sense of dominance which is very appealing. The 'star' shaped lighting is eye cathing, the pylon is positioned well, good to see that you took care not to cut off the edge of the pylon. The deep blue sky above helps to 'solid up' the composition. The power-lines leading off to the left make my eye follow that line and then I wonder what there is just outside the left of the frame (that's a good thing).

Somethings that would help finish off this composition (possibly outside of your control). Some stars in the sky; the tops of the tanks inside the cloud area (as opposed to only the very top of the left tank showing against the blue sky).

Give Holcim a call, I reckon you could sell this pic to them for them to hang in their reception/'s. 03 339 75 00

When taking landscapes, here's a few things that I try and remember.

The rule of thirds (although this can be broken to achieve a desired result)
An interesting foreground
Something to fill the backgroud
A focal point
Something leading your eye to the focal point
A contrast of tones
Perhaps some other object to catch your eye (but not a destraction)
And of course, the correct exposure (using filters to deepen problem areas, or to add warmth etc)
Don't forget that polerizer unless a reflection is your intention

I agree with you, usually it's all like. "Nice image"; "I like the 3rd one, nice composition"; "you really showed up the models attitude there"... I'll make you a deal, I criticize you if you criticize me. Deal?

Yes, call them, sell it, offer it as an A1 mounted print. chipper.
