Hi all. I just got back from my first road course event at Summit Point Raceway. I took a ton of shots but my ratio of keepers was relatively low. I'm used to shooting drag racing so this was all new to me :) I panned somewhere near 90% of all the shots of the weekend with shutter speeds between 1/125 and 1/180 in TV mode, ISO 400. Shots were taken with my 10D, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 on a monopod. Also, please excues the spots. I realized when I got the pictures on my computer that my sensor was filthy so a lot of my better shots were sacrificed :(

#4 is pretty cool
why ISO 400 though? at such slow shutter speeds that will give you a tiny aperture when shooting Tv mode. probably something like f20, maybe even smaller.
you could have shot at ISO100 with that lens!

Devin- I've seen that 'stang a few times but this weekend I think something was goofy with the car b/c it didn't run like it used to. Seemed down on power and the driver just didn't seem to have his head in it either.
Crypto- Did I meet you there? If you saw me you'd remember me. I was probably the skinniest guy there, lol. Your shots look awesome too ! It was a fun event but we were up too late the night before. We camped out and got almost no sleep from all the partying and fireworks :)

i don't know, just picked it out of my head. Looking back though I think more of my shots would have turned out better had I used a smaller aperture. The DOF seems too short on some of the shots with the cars coming towards the camera. O well, next time :)

some good shots there. as Dave said try ISO100. Also vary your shooting location and style during the day for something different.
other than that good work and keep on shooting

I shot all over the track, I had a media pass that got me pretty much anywhere but most of those shots fell victim to the dirt I had on my sensor :( As for varying my style, it was my first time so I was busy trying to figure out the basics. Shooting this type of racing is 100% more difficult to me with all the different angles. Just an excuse to keep going back ;)

I've been victim to dust as well for important shots :( is a nightmare. Luckily I was able to clone it out in PS.
Worth noting for the future, the dust only shows up really bad on small aperture shots. Chances are if you had forced the camera to use a larger aperture, it (the dust showing up) wouldn't have been that bad.

Live and learn. I'm sure I'll do better next time out.

that is true but more often than not you don't notice it until it comes time to edit the shots :(

Before going out for a shoot set the camera to the minimum aperture possible and take a shot of the sky. Then review the shot on the computer, or using the LCD on the camera. It can also come in handy later if you need to remove spots, since you won't miss any.

Great shots. I noticed the dust on the sensor but you can PS those out until you clean the sensor. Overal great pics. I have a lot of drift pics on my site: www.ClearPix.net

I'm curious, how do you go about getting a media pass?

Wow, I love that shot! what shutter speed/aperature were you shooting at?

Did you have to pay for it or say you work for a magazine or something?

Nope, just emailed the guy. Told him I was a freelancer and wanted to photog the event. He said "no prob, send me your mailing address and I'll get one out to you."
