Hi
a friend of mine has a 2200 and is having a problem. This is all I know:
"Halfway through a print the reds became orangish, and after that the next print has a yellowish cast all over"
I suspect she is out of the blue ink maybe. But she says the software ahs not given her any notification that a pigment is running low. (maybe the printer was installed incorrectly?)
How do we check this out, short of replacing ink cartridges at random?
thanks.

Humm... I would call Epson support at this stage.

First, is she using compatible ink or Epson original? If she's using Epson ink then, yes, contact Epson or download the latest drivers from their web site.

Second, I would try a clean install. Delete all software and start the installation, software and hardware, again.

I've had my 2200 for close to 9 months and I only use Epson ink and paper. If she's using capatible inks, get rid of them. I guessing, although I'm not an expert, that it's the ink if they're non-Epson.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I have found that my 2200 runs out of an ink before the out of ink light comes on and where the level indicator window that pops up is still around 1/8th left. If the printer monitor that comes up show any inks down below 1/4th to 1/8th, then it's very likely she is just out of ink.

Also, if she didn't shake the cartridges up before she used them, the ink might not be mixed up good if it sat in the box for a long time.

And like the others said, she might not be using real Epson inks. I read an article about a big bust where they found thousands of counterfit ink cartridges for a bunch of different brands in a warehouse. When some ofthe represenitives from the different ink makers took a look at them, they said some of the fake boxes were pretty good but that the inks were no where near as good as their printers needed to run good. Epson puts in aditives that help it and the 3rd party and fake ones don't have this.

If she does start swapping ink cartridges, have her start with the ones that have the lest ink left in them based on the printer monitor.

according to epson, this problem occurs if the printer is installed as networked printer! Then the ink levels warning feature does not function.
This remains to be tested (she has not uninstalled/reinstalled the 2200 software yet) but I have no reason to doubt him.
cheers!

Is that one of those things they don;t tell you about that you find out by accident?

I have also heard of Epson drivers becoming cirrupt and needing reloading. So far I havent had that trouble, but I've had enough of Epson to not want another one of their printers.

Epson instructions clearly state, "Shake the ink cartridge four or five times before opening" in bold lettering on each cartridge box. I use the 2200 and Epson's ICC profiles. It's a great printer. I have my monitor calibrated with Optical, shoot Adobe RGB, and with the Epson ICC profiles, my prints match my monitor.
