When I view my photos on the PC, they don't always show in order. I see some outdoor shots, then a random shot, then more outdoor shots. Has this happened to anyone else? How do I fix it?

I put my memory card in a reader, plug into the PC and choose the option to save to my PC. I don't have the time to rename 400 at a time. I just can't figure out why they would show up in a random - somewhat - order. ?

I guess its not a big deal, but when I am reviewing photos, I would like to see them in the order I took them. I just can't figure this one out. For the most part they are in order... its just that random one or two that aren't.

when you chimp, do you occassionally delete photos you don't want and then shoot more pictures? The camera fills the deleted sequence numbers with the new shots.

Mine doesn't do that. What settings cause this? I use continuos file numbering. Is that why I don't have this problem?

If you delete photos from your flash card and re-shoot of in the space it happens.

I use continuous file nubmering. It has to be because I delete sometimes as I go.
Ok, lame time, what is chimping? :)

Chimping is just the act of ... uh .... "reviewing" your shots right after you take them.
<raises hand> I'm guilty !
I, too, use continuous file numbering AND I delete some shots as I shoot ... but I've never experienced that "out of order" thing that you've described. You might try formatting your card in-camera before you shoot and see if that helps at all .....

Ok, I just saw the funniest video on chimping. You have probably seen it already but..

As a newbie to photography, I need to see what I am shooting. To me, that's the beauty of digital. When I am a better photographer maybe I won't NEED to, but hey man, I'm just curious. How did reviewing or deleting photos get a bad name? Is it because old school film photographers didn't have that choice? If they did, they would have done it :)

Yea ... I've seen that video ..... and you're right, it is a funny one.
I don't really know how "chimping" got a bad name. I can only think of one instance or situation where chimping would definitely be a "bad" thing to do .... (and I've had this happen to me) ....
I shoot a lot of sports. And, many times, after a play is over (whether it's football, basketball, or whatever) you'll see photographers checking out the shots they just took of that play. And sometimes something is still going on that's worthy of some photos but nobody's taking any shots because they're all "chimping" and missing what's going on right now! Like I said, that's happened to me before ... so I really try to keep the chimping down to a real minimum (like between quarters or at halftime) so that I don't miss those "post-play" opportunities.

Cecil, that is great advice. I can see where it can hurt and help. I shot a parade, I just kept shooting so I wouldn't miss anything and reviewed them at home. Then I shot in the studio and had to look to see my exposure. When its aweful, I delete it. I should try to become more confident in my shooting, but truth is, I am making this up as I go along, so I do need to review occasionally. Meh, I guess lesson here is "don't get caught chimping." haha.

I format my cards first thing when I stick them into the cameras, but with both my 20D and XT, it sticks new photos in empty spots . . . ???

I did have one case where a couple of years ago where I had deleted some files on the CF card between shoots. When I had begain shooting again it created the same file name, but different contents. Ever since then I never deleted photos on the card, only when I finished downloading them on to the computer.
