There are too many factors to give you a hard and fast answer. Image sizes can vary greatly based on the level of detail, color and even the subject matter. Of course, the camera plays a big role too...a 1DsmkII (16mp) is going to eat up a card far faster than a D30 (3.5mp). If you are using a middle of the road camera, you could probably expect to get 80-100 shots on a card in RAW.

If I remember correctly, I had my 512mb card in my XT set on raw+jpeg and I believe I could get around 80 pics on it. I know you were asking about a 1gb card, so you could probably double that.

Hope that helps.

I still go with the 80-100 shots on a 1gb card. Just depends on what you are shooting. You could get a few more, you might get a few less. That gives you a starting point.

You should get 80+ no sweat. And as long as you are not shooting an event....having a laptop to dump to should be just fine.

You can normally get more pictures than it estimates, or at least that's what I've found. It will tell me that with my 300D I will get 110, but I normally end up with almost 130.

Just make sure they are Sandisk Ultra, Sandisk Extreme or Lexar pro cards. You dont' want anything too slow, because there are defintely afordable 4 to 8gb cards but they aren't that good in quality. I probably wouldn't go higher than 4gb's, just because well if one card goes bad, you are screwed.

I agree... I can tell a huge difference between my 512mb Ultra II and my regular 512mb PNY (that according to the carton was 'fast')

yeah i will tell him to get the best he can get... i understand the importance of a fast card, especialy since im starting to photograph hockey games when the season starts (for my brother)

I've never shot hockey but from what I've read you may want to get a faster lens also. Your most likely going to have to crank your ISO way up there, depending on the lighting of course. Don't forget to set your WB for the ice to.

Here's some tips on how to do that, hope that helps you out.

Good luck.

my parents baught a pic of my sister playing hockey for like 20 bucks and it was definetally not worth the money. im going to be photographing some hockey soon, and i really need help, im probably gona use iso 1600 (maybe 800), and aperture of 4 (with my 70-200mm 4L) but im not sure about the white balance, i had never really understood how to set a custom white balance, but i know know that i sould set it as the ice. Anyways, if you could give me a few picters that would be great. And you have really nice hockey photos by the way.

-Alex
You will most likely need to shoot at ISO 1600. For the white balance, all you need to do is shoot a photo of the ice... then go into the menu and select Custom WB, once in there, it will ask which photo to use as the Custom WB and select the shot of the ice. Then don't forget to set your WB to Custom. Hope this helps.

yeah at the moment i can not pay for a faster lens... :( .... i wish i could get a $300+ lens but i have no money after getting this camera.. but this lens seems to work quite well while i was on the freeway in the car taking pics of the other lane (oposite direction) to test the camera and lens and differences in iso... but the AF is slow, any recomendations on lenses as i will have a few months b4 any travel turneyments

thanks for the tips
