I have not seen Gitzo's in person so I will ask for advice here.
OK working with 30D & 70-200L F2.8 IS. Maybe 1D series someday.
Would like to take night photos and some portrait use.
I am not hiking or anything with it. But don't want a tank either.
I am looking at the G-1257 Mountain Reporter 6X Carbon.
I see many similar pods in the $400-600 Range options such as geared column, level column, rotating column?? Couple of different models with similar specs.
Which one to get????? G-1228, G-1257, G-1258, G-2257, G-2258, G-2540 with which column Or different one altogether?
Note Looking at legs only right now.

I'm thinking about the same series tripod.
I'ld say 1257 or 1258, depending on whether you need the compactness of 4 section legs.
I've tried the 22xx in a shop, and didn't like the handling.
Take a look at the site of RRS (http://www.reallyrightstuff.com/). They offer some advise.
There is also this site (http://bythom.com/support.htm).

I tried several 1xxxx versions of Gitzo with 5D 70-200 2.8 IS on a AS BI head. I decided on the G1257 rapid column for its stability vs the G1258, as for, geared or rapid or leveling columns - its personal choice, note the leveling tripod is apprx CAD$200 more. I did not need geared and the leveling is nice to have but not necessary for what I shoot , therefore the rapid column won over. I chose stability over compactness - not much difference in folded height. This tripod will meet most of my need until I get some big glass and that will require a whole new setup !
Hope this helps - Good Luck !:D

Good luck with that mate - Ive had one on order from Warehouseexpress for over 3 months and still no sign or news
Apparently Hassleblad no lobger are the distributors so whoever has taken over isn't doing much of a job either....Gitzo going down the pan I wonder???

RRS BH-40 or BH-50

I currently have a Gitzo 1128 and a RRS BH-40. I wanted the 1 series tripod so that I can take it hiking with me. I haven't tried it yet with a 70-200IS but that lens might be pushing the weight limit.
You should be fine with a 12xx tripod & the BH-40 head.
