View Full Version : POTN Northwest Meet?

Just and FYI on Gig Harbor... it's a really small down-town area. There are no Ferries from Gig Harbor to Seattle. You can drive to Bremerton from Gig Harbor which is about a 30-40 min drive, then catch a ferry from Bremerton to Seattle. The other option is driving "around" which is basically going through Tacoma and heading north on I-5. That would be 45-55 minute drive as opposed to a 30-40 min drive to bremerton a wait in line for a ferry and then a ferry ride...
Seattle has recently added a new park, it's Olympic Sculpture Park with, if I remember correctly, around 20 or so art sculptures. It overlooks Elliot Bay and you can see the Olympic Mountains. Here is a webpage (http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/OSP/default.asp) with info about it. This page (http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/OSP/AboutOSP/default.asp)has more "specific" info about the park itself.
The last Saturday in march should work for me at this point. :)
Yep, I was aware of that, but Gig Harbour has a fantastic view of Mt. Ranier on a clear day (which is always iffy in March). I thought the drive to Bremerton was more like 20-30 minutes....

The drive to the actual ferry dock is probably on the longer end of 30.
Yes, Gig Harbor DOES have an amazing view of "the mountain". I'm hoping to go over there on Monday morning and get some sunrise shots if the weather permits. My dad and I are having a father/son day and it will include some photography. :)

hmm, what about the rainforest/lake quinalt?
ocean shores or neah bay
mt st helens
theres a fellow wedding photog doing a fun shoot this weekend, the idea is everyone goes into seattle with a similar focal lengeth (~85mm 35equivalent) and shoots all day, then a contest at the end of the day to see who got the best shot.

For those of you who are interested in area meet ups, here is a link to a valuable resource for area photogs who wish to get together and shoot area offerings. Planned for this weekend are two seperate outings, one to Juanita Bay in Kirkland and one to the Ridgefield NWR north of Vancouver. Members of NWP, which is free to join and participate, regularly set gatherings to shoot events and area subjects. You can input your ideas and schedule outings with other area photogs as a member. It is pretty easy and there are many nice people who share the same interest(s) as you!
For those of you who are interested and aren't already participating, check it out: http://www.nwphotographers.net
You will find instructions on joining as well as links to other area photography resources. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me as I am the founder and administrator of the group.

BTW, as a resident of Gig Harbor and commuter who uses the Bremerton ferry atleast once a week, I can say that from Gig Harbor, you are definitely looking at 30+ minutes, depending on traffic and how fast you drive to get to the Bremerton ferry terminal.
Oh, and that mountain . . .

AJ, where did you shoot that from? On Monday my dad and I went over looking for some sunrise photos but we went to the end of the harbor. This looks like you're about the middle of the harbor and UP a little bit. Care to share your location?

I was standing on the top of my '99 F-250 SuperDuty PU fiberglass canopy (approximately 7' 6" off the ground), camera on a tripod, residents of neighboring homes wondering what the heck I was doing, just south of here:

There are many vantage points, most of which are best if you can get 6-10 feet off the ground.
Here are a couple more:
These were shot from the no longer in place viewing platform here:

I think it should be an open thing.. I can definately make it on Saturday in Seattle.. Not posotive about Sunday it might depend a bit on whether my aunt drives up with me.. Which she mentioned wanting to do.. But, then again.. she might just come with us... She won't take pictures but she doesn't mind going along for the ride..

We need a local to suggest a good meeting location and time. Prime considerations are:
1. Ease of finding it.
2. Parking or public transportation
We also need a suggestion of itinerary/theme.
Do we want to meet for breakfast or lunch then go from there?
How do we recognize each other? Anyone have a suggestion for that?

I say we get there early - 8-9am ;-) sure that means us Oregon folk need to get up early, but I think it will be worth it. We could have breakfast somewhere and then take over the city!
I think if we have a meet point and we start seeing a group form there with camera bags.... that is how we will recognize each other... Though this thread has other ideas: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=284528

Yeah, I'm not sure I'm going to walk around Pike Place in the morning calling out for "Puddles."
What kind of breakfast do people want? There are coffee/pastry sorts of things available in the market in several places. Lowell's (http://www.eatatlowells.com/) offers a little heartier fare, with an outstanding view of the waterfront. You can order from the counter and head for a table (makes it easier for groups).
I'm sure there are others, but I'm a bit of a Market fan, so I freely admit my bias.

breakfast is easy... piece of toast.. cup of coffee.... wait, no take that back. dangit! i've given up on coffee... six months two weeks and counting... .. I'm good just about anywhere and y'all can call me whatever you want. The common ones are Sari, Sara, or Rose... I don't think recognizing eachother will be an issue.... yes well.. until my move up here I was an espresso girl. doubles two to three a day. and suddenly there aren't any coffee spots to drive into and I realize just how much I like my coffee... and then I realized that it was a bit of a habit and decided to see how I do without the caffeine fix. I drink a lot of cherry pepsi's but, so far so good. Ofcourse I haven't as yet put myself in Seattle where there's a coffee spot every fifteen feet... Y'all may have to remind me periodically that i've given it up.

I think the coffee is better for you than the cherry pepsi... If you don't have any good spots in town, why not make your own?
The daily routine for me is to wake up, check RRTP, brew a cup of coffee and then go one with my day... Good routine :-D

I don't like regular coffee tastes like watered down real coffee.. (aka espresso).. and the whole idea was that I drank too much of it... hmm.. 'I'll take a double shot espresso with foam'... yep, that was me. ;) ;) .. My excuse then was that I didn't have any other habits. I do worry that i've traded one form of caffeine for another... But, coffee is just not available up here.. What i'd have to go through to get an espresso in the morning would be ridiculous...  ..

that would work, except that for those wanting to go downtown, itl district, water front etc, they have a bit of a issue getting around or have to repark somewhere else.

Here's my suggestion.
For those coming from the Eastside or that don't want to deal with parking, lets carpool.
Mercer Island Pres parking lot (also a park and ride), 30 seconds off the freeway, easy to find, and 5 minutes from downtown Seattle.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/viperx27/map1.jpg
For those that want to meet in Seattle, I suggest the Quest field open parking lot next to the king street station. Probably $10 for all day. There might be cheaper lots around to the south if you are frugal.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v721/viperx27/map2.jpg
for the real penny pinchers you can try this area for free, usually only can't park there on game days, and the home opener isn't till Monday the 2nd.

The reason why I suggest here is that its easy to find (stadiums are hard to miss), its relatively safe (my brother manages one of the bars next door) and that its convenient for where ever people want to go. Its blocks from the ITL district, pioneer square and the water front. Theres trolleys at the water front for those that want to do Pike Place. In the ITL district you can get a main line bus (ride free in downtown area) towards the space needle.
As for an actual meeting place, I'm not sure yet, our bar doesn't open on Saturdays till 5. Maybe we can stake out a corner of the lot and do a little starbucks tailgate party or something.

I like central meeting place/carpool idea. I was going to stay a hotel downtown, but an average of $250 a night just seems a bit steep for me when what I want to do is be out shooting, so I'll probably stay near the Seatac Airport and drive in Saturday morning.
