View Full Version : POTN Northwest Meet?

Anyone interested in a POTN Northwest Meet?
I'm considering putting together a POTN meet and greet for those of us in Oregon/Washington. Anyone interested?
I want to time it for sometime in August or early September while we have good shooting weather and I was thinking of either doing the Coast (Seaside to Canon Beach) or the Gorge (Columbia River National Scenic Highway) or possibly Silver Falls State Park.
If we can get together a half dozen or so photographers, it would be fun to get out and shoot for a day and talk shop!

Don't live in WA, and still learning myself, but for Seahawk tickets I'd be willing to fake it:lol:

Well, I'm going to give this thead until Sunday, and then I'll propose a date, time and location to meet, and an itinerary for shooting to see if we can get everyone onboard. Any preferences for the following?
Oregon Coast - Seaside, Ecola Point, Canon Beach (shoot will include all three areas)
Columbia River Gorge - Down the Columbia River National Scenic Highway to several waterfalls along the way.
Silver Falls State Park - Hiking the loop from North Falls down past several waterfalls and streams.
Feel free to provide your own suggestions.

The Columbia River Gorge starts about 25 miles east of Portland. We'd start at the Vista House at Crown Point and work our way east down the Columbia River Scenic Highway to several waterfalls before having a meal at Multnomah Falls and heading back to Portland on I-84. That's one itinerary.

Wath this thread and you'll get an idea of the numbers. Time to meet? I'm going to suggest an early start to take advantage of the light.
The evening light is also good in the Gorge, but I think the morning light angles in to hit the various falls better.
Any suggested times?

Hey guys. Went on a scouting expedition today (got some pretty nice waterfall pics). There's a Holiday Inn Express at Exit 17 on I-84 which is the exit just adjacent to the Historic Columbia River Highway. I'll get the address and phone number tomorrow. There's quite a few little bars and restuarants around the area where we can have dinner on Friday night.
There was a heavy marine layer of clouds today, which made shooting the waterfalls quite a bit more interesting (less contrast to deal with). I started from home at about 8 am which put me in the Gorge around 8:30 - so we might not need to get up quite so early (depending on the weather).
For the meet, make sure you bring good hiking shoes, a tripod, and I recommend you bring an ND filter (at least a 0.6) so you can use long shutter speeds for the falls.
More info to follow.

Sounds like many of you may be interested in NWPhotographers.net
If you like to get together with other photographers in and around the Pacific Northwest, you really should check it out. As a matter of impecable timing, there is currently scheduled a meeting of members in Centralia where there will be demonstrations, conversation, food and drink. Beyond that, NWPhotographers.net members regularly schedule outings to photograph sites and events of the area. Some notable outings of recent past include a chartered boat trip to Protection Island in search of Tufted Puffins and other fowl, a stroll through the Bloedel Reserve, numerous gatherings at area wildlife reserves, photographer only shoots at NW Trek and more.
NWPhotographers.net is free to it's members and is not commercially affiliated in anyway. Quite simply, it is a place to share with area photographers, just as is being suggested here in this thread.
OK, enough, are you interested? Here is a link: http://www.nwphotographers.net

Just wanted to see if perhaps you and the list of others that you have been assembling were interested in joining a slew of other area photographers over on nwphotographers.net as we often plan outings and meetings as a group. In a nutshell, you are creating a means of communicating with area photographers and that is what NWP is all about. NWPhotographers.net is free and not commercially affiliated, just a bunch of local photographers who like sharing and getting together. NWP provides a wealth of opportunity for area photogs to share images and talk photography, just like here and on other forums, only it is comprised of local area folks, like you and me.

Never realized how many NW photographers there were on here.
I'd be willing to meet for a photo day somewhere. Mark since you're creating a list you are welcome to add me.
Late March would be ok with me as long as we can get a date somewhat ahead of time. My wife loves to plan things out a month or so in advance so availability will continue to be reduced the closer we get to the actual date. :)

Well, honestly, I'm kind of tired of shooting waterfalls, but I'm up for just about anything else.
We can tentativel set-up a date for the last weekend in March (Saturday), so we just need to choose a location and theme.

I'm okay with that, but I'm going to have to rely on the WA folks to recommend a good location that fits with whatever theme we finally choose.
If people will PM me some thematic suggestions, I'll collect them a put up a poll.

I like the idea of a meet anywhere in Washington (central WA is a plus for everyone I'd say) I dunno about NW Trek tho - think about the POTN members that don't have much in the way of long lenses... it might not be much fun. Maybe it's just me mis-remembering what NW Trek is like, but aren't most of the animals quite a ways away??

Hi Mark,
You can count me in as well and I will hit everyone on my buddy list as well.
I enjoy shooting in downtown Tacoma, along the Ruston way waterfront, then on to Point Defiance park, you can get old architecture, industry (port of Tacoma), shipping, waterfront with modern trains, people, fire boats, ocassional Bald eagles, then point Defiance has Japenese garden, rose garden (summer) steam train logging camp. fort Nisqually, Never Never land, and more waterfront beach access, views to the Narrows Bridge etc.....Lots of variety....

If someone wants to try motorsports there is a great opportunity in Portland at Portland International Raceway on the 17th of March. There is an enduro that day with plenty of shooting opportunities from 9am until 8pm.

I was PM'd and told to check out this thread.
I'm not much of a bird guy, but I'll be at Portland International Raceway shooting the ICSCC 8 hour Enduro on March 17th. The race starts at noon, and ends at 8:00pm. There are many different vantage points around the track that are 'equipment-friendly' for the long and short lens owners. I should have my 300mm F/4L IS by then. :D
If anyone's interested in making this event into a meet, I'm all for it. If not, no biggie. Just feel free to keep me in the loop otherwise.
AJ, FWIW, maybe the "membership" forum on NWP.net could be open to everyone. I've been signed up a while and still can't view specific sections of that site where the meeting talk seems to be happening.

I'd like to keep the date set for now (last Saturday in March), so the people that would like to make plans to for the meet can do so. Location will be somewhat determined by the theme we choose - for example, urban photography is going to need to be in a city and seascapes along the coast. So, let's focus on the theme first and then decide on the best location (or vice versa). I can put up a poll if that's the desire of the group.

Mark, I think a poll is a good idea. That will get the conversation started and narrowed a bit.
Some ideas:
Oregon Coast
Downtown Portland
Northwest Trek
Downtown Seattle

I'd like to add Gig Harbor to the list as a possiblity, it's a little seaport on Puget Sound (and about an hour ferry ride from Seattle). Also, Astoria, Oregon is one of those gritty seaport towns.

Those areas sound great Mark. I was going to suggest the Washington coast up 101 past Ocean Shores and what not but I'm going there this Sunday. It's a nice drive and there's a ton of little beaches on the way.
Northwest Trek or downtown Portland/Seattle would be my vote. Pike Place is a great place for candids, but it gets crowded! I've never been to NW Trek.

The suggestions I have so far are:
Downtown Portland - Urban Photography
Downtown Seattle - Urban Photography
Astoria - Seaport Photography/Urban Photography
Gig Harbor AM/Seattle PM - Landscape and Urban Photography (Puget Sound via Ferry)
Oregon Coast (Canon Beach) - Landscape/Seascape
NW Trek - Wildlife/Landscape Photography
So, I'll wait until the end of today to collect anymore suggestions then put up a poll tomorrow with the final results. So, if you have any interesting ideas, post them here or PM me.

Just and FYI on Gig Harbor... it's a really small down-town area. There are no Ferries from Gig Harbor to Seattle. You can drive to Bremerton from Gig Harbor which is about a 30-40 min drive, then catch a ferry from Bremerton to Seattle. The other option is driving "around" which is basically going through Tacoma and heading north on I-5. That would be 45-55 minute drive as opposed to a 30-40 min drive to bremerton a wait in line for a ferry and then a ferry ride...
Seattle has recently added a new park, it's Olympic Sculpture Park with, if I remember correctly, around 20 or so art sculptures. It overlooks Elliot Bay and you can see the Olympic Mountains. Here is a webpage (http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/OSP/default.asp) with info about it. This page (http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/OSP/AboutOSP/default.asp)has more "specific" info about the park itself.
The last Saturday in march should work for me at this point. :)
