Just out of interest, it would be great if there was one as im going to Mexico in October, apparently the sea is crystal clear!

Thanks,

Ryan.

Yes there are quite a few. Go to the B&H website (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) and follow the "Underwater" link on the left-menu bar.

I just happen to have Scuba Diving magazines lying around and I found the following:

http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/camcanchart.html

They carry underwater housing systems for I believe just about every Canon pt&shoot as well as dSLRs: (350/30d/20d/5d/10d)

Edit: i just realized you probably just want to take photos in shallow waters while the link i provided are for underwater diving photos.

As much as I'd like to take underwater images, there is just no way I could bring myself to do it. 2-much money at risk from my own mistakes.

1D MKII for that duties. They can even take a direct hit from an Atom Bomb. ;)

Underwater cases for DSlrs are quite an investment. Sometimes they cost more than the camera body itself (most of the time). It all depends if this will be a one time deal, or if you will pursue this type of photography. I owned a Olympus Camedia C-5050 and got an underwater case for it for under $200. Now that my son is into Scuba diving, he takes out all the time, and gets pretty decent pictures. Perhaps, getting a good P&S, and the underwater case for it may be cheaper than the case for your 350D.

Yes, marine cases for DSLRs are up there. I ended up getting a refurbed SD400 (whatever is on special at Adorama) along with the fitted Canon marine case...a much less expensive alternative that won't leave you feeling nervous underwater; however, I did this for snorkling, so I can't comment on how it would work for diving. You will probably want to find a refurbed SDxxx or Sxxx camera with the highest ISO.

There is another option I saw at REI (and B&H)...aquapac for $120...it's basically a watertight heavy duty ziploc bag you can shoot through. I wouldn't take this diving though...only good for 15 feet of depth.

They also have smaller ones for compact digital cameras.

Good grief, why are they so expensive? All it basically a plastic shell and a shutter mechanism, right?

And sealing against water ingress down to 30m! Thats quite some pressure!

Another drawback for underwater DSlr is that since you can't use the LCD panel to preview the shot, and its almost imposible to see through the viewfinder with the mask on, taking pictures with it will be a hit or miss case when it come to focusing the subject. In that sense, the P&S camera may give you the advantage of previewing the picture through the LCD panel. In that case, fresh batteries are a must before going underwater; using the lcd will cut battery life drastically.

They also charge you lots more for essentially the same case depending on how much the camera cost, i.e. the same case for 20D is much cheaper than for 5D. That stinks of pricing based on how much they think they can take from you. And don't forget you have to add on the cost of a lens port to most of them.

I went the route of buying an S50 and the Canon UW case for it for half the price of just the case for my 300D, which I'll probably end up buying anyway

While the LCD on a P&S is visible through the case and the buttons are all accessible I found in practice that I could not see the LCD at all underwater and ended up switching it off to conserve battery life (can't change those at sea) and to power down anything that contributed to heat build up and condensation in the case.

A LCD hood helps a bit. I have it on my case, but turning off the LCD while not taking pics helps battery life, and condensation within the case. I normally put a dessicant bag inside the case to prevent lens fogging due to condensation.

The underwater casing for my old Sony W1 digicam cost more than the present value of the camera. haha :D

Check out EWA Marine. If all you're going to do is use it for snorkeling, the make some plastic pouches that are actually supposed to be quite good. Kinda like a glorified ziplock for your camera, here's the link.http://ewamarine.com/

Ikelite, Sea and Sea and several others have housings for the Rebel XT. You might want to pick up a strobe, too. Will be my next big purchase also as I live in Florida and love to dive!
