I think my work colleagues & I are getting tired of work & no play. We always have the radio on & occasionally one of the guys (I share a room with the two layout guys) will burst out singing. Then we'll end up singing all of us & now one guy suggested we should go to some karaoke bar & shout, ehm, sing.

I'm all for that now, but I'm already singing at home. I need company. C'mon POTN crowd, let's here some karaoke!

Write down some lyrics, suggest good karaoke songs, tell us some good story or upload a file with you singing!

:D

The last time I broke out in karaoke fever, it took several beers and a stylish rendition of "You Never Even Call Me by my Name" to rid myself of the singing urge (as luck would have it, my singing also served to clear out the crowd when the bar was ready to close). :)

""I was drunk the day my mama got out of prison,
I went to pick her up in the pourin' rain.
But before I could get to the station in my 'pickup truck',
She got run over by a dang ol' train..

And I'll hang around as long as you will let me.
I'll never leave you standin' in the rain,
You don't have to call me 'darlin', ... darlin
You never even call me by my name""

That's enough - my throat is dry. :)

I used to karaoke a lot about 10 years ago just after I divorced my 1st wife. My friends and I used to hang out at the bar of the local Comfort Inn where they had karaoke night every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Saturday was the night the "pros" went to sing and we got good enough to sing on Saturday nights. :)

My favorite songs were "Whiter Shade of Pale", "Born to be Wild", "Secret Agent Man" and one or two others (what can I say, I'm a baby boomer). :)

I layed off the karoke scene for a couple of months and when I returned to it, I discovered that this one new guy who can't carry a tune to save his life had made "Born to be Wild" the song he'd always sing whenever he was there. One night, I decided I wanted to sing "Born to be Wild" so I did. As I was walking up to my table after I finished the song, that guy came up to me and told me that I had sang "his" song. Well, needless to say, I never sang "Born to be Wild" after that since he did a much better job of making people laugh every time he sang it than I ever could.

But karaoke is a lot of fun, especially when you do it with a bunch of drunk friends. :)

The last vague recollection I have of karaoke is my sister and I attempting a rousing rendition of Copacabana (complete with choreography) after about 2 pitchers of beer. Trust me, you don't want a recording of that! :D

LOVE karaoke!!! And I've passed along the gene to my son! My parents have karaoke hooked up to their home stereo (speakers built into the wall). My 3 year old son will get on there and sing his heart out. It doesn't matter what the song is, he makes up his own words... Took a bunch of pics this weekend of him. Go karaoke fever!!!

Karaoke, despite it's apparent level of popularity, is the goofiest thing I've ever seen...

Could be, I guess.

I know I could never get drunk enough to try it, and I sure as Hell wouldn't do it sober!

Monter, you gonna post some shots of your son? :)

Steve, yep, it's goofy as hell & as you never know what scale (?) the song will be in,it's difficult to get it right. But, that's why you only sing among friends.he he

I always thought Karaoke was pretty damn stupid. And I mean seriously stupid. I won't go to a Karaoke night. Ever. If I want to hear people sing, it'll be at a concert.

The better karaoke machines allow you to adjust the keys to your voice so that shouldn't be a problem. Heck, even my old Pioneer LD player has karaoke built-in and allows the key to be changed. :)

You're missing the point about karaoke night. It's not about hearing people sing. It's about having fun with a bunch of friends. Some people go to bars and get thrown all over the place trying to ride a mechanical bull. Other people like to wear sumo suits and sumo wrestle with others in similarly ridiculous sumo suits. ;)

PacAce,
One doesn't have to be drunk to sing karaoke. :)

But it probably helps.... ;)

That much is obvious, as very few people do anything that resembles "singing".

I don't have a lot of patience for sumo suits or mechanical bulls, either...

To get me to sing karaoke I would have to be really drunk...... And I do not drink

Thankfully none of my friends had a video camera at hand during our parties. Actually, one friend recorded stuff during my 22nd birthday party. (Oh my gosh, it's been THAT long??!). I still haven't received the tape from him though... A shame really as it'd be awfully cool to have it. Nice memory.

Steve, the point about Karaoke isn't that you're supposed to sing. You're supposed to "sing". ;)

And wait, you mean you've never tried the sumo suits? I got a couple of pics of me in one...LOL (thankfully not digital ones!). The mechanical bull, hm, I have a very vague memory of trying one out. Probably didn't go too well...

Tommy,
May I ask how come you don't drink? (says the girl who hasn't had anything alcohol related in maybe a year...)

tommykjensen
14th of July 2006 (Fri), 16:29
Yes You may and the answer is very simple. I have never wanted to. Probably never will. No religious or health reasons. Just don't have the desire for drinking alchohol.

Steve,
Depends the kind of person you are. :) But yeah, if I'm gonna stand in front of a bunch of strangers, I'd probably need to be drunk. If it's just me and my friends, nah, but tipsy does make things more fun...

I played in a band for nine years, and I never had to be drunk to get on stage. I often left the stage a little tipsy, but I'd be sober as a judge when I got up there.

Karaoke, though?

Ain't enough Bourbon in the world...

So what's the difference between singing with a band and singing to prerecorded music?

No fans listening adoringly... ;)

Besides, Steve never said he sang in the band...

Getting tipsy ON stage doesn't sound that good though...

When it's karaoke, it's not your music.

monter
16th of July 2006 (Sun), 12:14
you know... as long as you have fun doing it, what does it matter what others think? Besides, I don't think ANYONE goes to a karaokee bar thinking they are gonna find the next superstar. In fact Ithink it's the opposite. I think most people assume that they aren't going to hear much that's great, but it's still fun. Its' all about the attitude you have going in. It's like that in life right? If you think something is fun before you do it, it will be fun.. If you have the pre-concieved notion that it's stupid, it will be and you will have a miserable time.

Oh and I don't karaokee in public. Only in the privacy of my parents home.. occasionally they'll have parties and EVERYONE will sing... good or not, but I've only ever seen laughter and smiles. And I WILL post a couple of photos of my 3 year old doing it. He thinks it's GREAT!

Just my .02 :)

So what's the difference between singing with a band and singing to prerecorded music?

Stage presence; the interaction between band members, the interaction with the crowd when they request a song, and you don't have to cycle through some electronic catalog to find it.

There are almost no similarities between the two...

Steve Parr

Well, I did.

Whether or not I did it well isn't my call to make, though!

Claire
16th of July 2006 (Sun), 13:08
I agree it's a big difference singing in a band compared to prerecorded music, but I don't see why one can't enjoy both. :)

Heck, if I'd only be after THAT feeling I would still be in a choir & not sing outside of it. No more singing around the campfire with mates, no more at parties or in the shower. That all be boring if all I'm after is the stage feeling...

jbkalla
16th of July 2006 (Sun), 17:20
I sang in the shower once... Does that count?

I had to stop because it hurt even my ears!

PS... Nouna, love your avatar! Have you posted the full-size version?

OT: This is my first post to the CDP Forums so, "Hi!" :)

I get hit by the karaoke fever more often than I probably should. I own an SMG-191 from The Singing Machine, over two dozen karaoke CDs and I have been known to occasionally purchase karaoke songs off iTunes.

I tend to gravitate to the classic stuff, particularly The Eagles, Motown and James Taylor. All I know is that karaoke somehow inspires me to continue playing the piano and writing my own music.

I always thought my lyrics sucked but now I'm getting more confident...

I embarrass the heck out of my kids when I do "Born to be Wild" :) It seems that they think that I'm stretching it a little to sing it. "Cat's in the Cradle" is one of my better songs though. Even the kids like that one. :)

Whenever I do "Cat's In The Cradle" I get teary-eyed, myself. I really, really, really like doing "Black Water".
