Being new to the dslr i decided to have a mess with shutter speeds and other settings down by the quayside (River Tyne).

Starting to enjoy the camera and just getting out and about.

Welcome to the world of DLSR's, looks like you've made a good start. As you already know the Quayside is great for photos, in #2 it looks like you didn't get down there on one of the really still nights.

Nice photos, did you use any sort of filter in No.1 to get the star effect on the street light.

Whiteflyer: to achieve that affect all you need to do is use around f/9 plus, to smaller the aperture in my experience, the larger the star effect (to a degree).
