Lighting

I am very new to this digital thing and am having a problem finding the right lighting. Today I was shooting with 50mm 1.8. I shot both in shade and in full sun. The shade shots lost of of the color and were too dark. The full sun were too hot. Where should I go from here?

What mode were you shooting in? What was the WhiteBalance set to?

Dana, try this book Understanding Exposure by Bryan Petersen. It's quite helpful and will explain a lot of the basics. He also has a new book, Understanding Digital Photography which you may find useful as well.
