Although I haven't done any professional work, I would be interested in attending. Either weekend works fine for me. I've only been in the area about 3 years.
My preference would be a Saturday, but I realize that may be a working day for alot of guys so I can go with the flow.

Leere, sounds great! I have been in KC a whopping 4 months and only been shooting a little over 2 years. There are no pre-req's to coming out and enjoying photography!
The more the merrier!

I'd be game for such a thing, I've only been here two years, so it would be nice to meet some locals and have fun taking photos.

Sounds good Phil! 40 people have looked at this thread so hopefully we'll get a couple more folks who are interested as well.

This something I most assuredly would be interested in but it depends on the arrival of the new camera or the repair of the old one, and my preparation to teach the new semester. I'll continue to watch the thread as it comes closer for a confirmed date.

See, now you've gone and done it monter! All the guys will be flocking to the gathering now!! ;)
I'll bring my daughter so that you aren't the only lady in the group!!

In all seriousness, everyone of every skill set is welcome. I've seen images from guys using point and shoots that rival many so called "pros".

LOL Joe. Your daughter is Beautiful!!! My 3 year old son's got a thing for older blondes... She'd be right up his alley!
Alright Wu... good to know!!!! I work in a lab full of "boys" and I live with 2 "boys" so I need some estrogen every once in a while. No offense to the rest of you ;)

I'll bring my daughter so that you aren't the only lady in the group!!
Off Topic: Joe, have you starterd your gun collection to clean on Firday and Saturday night's when your daughter starts dating? She's a cutie-pie, I suggest getting alot of big guns. :) I'm currently decided on a Mossberg pump or a .45 XD to start the collection. I figure in 13.5 years, I'll have quite a collection of guns to 'motivate' future suitors of my daughter!
Wu & Monica, I've added you to the list! All ages and skill sets are welcome. We want this to be a learning (and social) experience for everyone!
monter
20th of July 2006 (Thu), 10:51
Erik you are cracking me up!!! My boss has two cute blonde daughters (again my son loves them) and he does martial arts... he says every suitor will be taken into the back yard for a little lesson.....
joekr
20th of July 2006 (Thu), 11:03
Thanks monter!
I'm currently penciling in my heart attack somewhere around 46 - 48 when prom hits.
I haven't started collecting weapons yet, but I figure me at the door in a nasty wife beater t-shirt, a bottle of Jack Daniels in one hand and some sort of firearm being cleaned on the dining room table should keep the rif-raf out!
I figure if I break in the first one hard, word will quickly spread!
:)

Knife cleaning was my best friend's at the door "protection" of his daughters. He could have chosen any method. His trophies for marksmanship and photos of his martial arts competitions were all over. Miss that guy.

Never know Monter!
Messing with a guys daughter is definitely a no-no...Knife cleaning is a good alternative to gun cleaning Wu. I'll have to keep that in mind!
My daughter loves being the little model. Maybe I really will bring her with me the day of the meet if the venue is something she would like. She's sharp as a tack and loves being photographed.

As we approach August, it seems that the 5/6th weekend is best. I'm going to suggest 10am on August 5th and meeting in the Parking Lot of the Nelson Atkins Musuem of Art ($3 to park). Comments/Suggestions?

Erik, That day works fine for me. Never been to that museum before, is that where we want to go shooting? Is there a lot around there that would be promising subjects/objects to shoot?
I just googled it and it looks very nice.

Thanks for the update!
There are a variety of art displays as well as figure/sculptures on the grounds not to mention the buildings themselves. There are quite a few displays available to photography (within the rules below).
The museum opens at 10am and there is a cafe within (as well as what appears to be a nicer/pricier resturant). Depending on the group consensus, we could opt to eat at one of those places rather than travel to a 2nd location. I'm thinking the Museum cafe to keep costs low for everyone. I'd think we could do the entire meet for less than $15-20/person.
From the website concerning photography:
Photography
Visitors are welcome to take photographs inside the Nelson-Atkins Building, including photos of most art (note the exception in the paragraph below), but only without a tripod or flash. Flash photography is allowed in only two areas of the Museum: Kirkwood Hall and Rozzelle Court Restaurant. Hand-held video cameras (without lights) are acceptable. Professional portrait and bridal photography are not permitted inside the Museum. Outdoor photography (http://www.nelson-atkins.org/welcome/Guidelines.cfm#) carries particular guidelines.
Art on view in special exhibition galleries or on loan to the Nelson-Atkins may not be photographed.
Photographs can be taken for personal or educational uses only. No image of the Nelson-Atkins or its art may be reproduced, transmitted, distributed, displayed, published or otherwise used for commercial purposes without written permission from the Rights & Reproduction (http://www.nelson-atkins.org/welcome/Guidelines.cfm#) office.
Members of the media or if you are interested in arranging for commercial photography, see our Press Room (http://www.nelson-atkins.org/welcome/PressRoom.cfm).

I checked Google maps for an area parking lot but didn't see a conglomeration of cars. If everyone wants to be on their own for parking, we can just meet out by the black reflecting pool (see superb illustration by me):

You should come Jason! It should be a good time for everyone, and I'm hoping to learn some new techniques or maybe get a better grasp on lighting etc... (never had any formal training, I'm completely self taught...)

Well darn Joe! I was hoping you were gonna teach ME about lighting! :) guess we'll have to count on Erik!
I'm shooting an event in about an hour and then 4-5 cars of all different makes (39 Lincoln Zephyr, '58 Aston Martin, AutoBianchi, etc) so I'm going to have a weekend filled with 'light' challenges!
...besides, I just shoot on auto all the time.;)
joekr
29th of July 2006 (Sat), 11:25
LOL, I know a little about lighting....now white balance and grey cards....
me=clueless!
The museum should hopefully be well lit but I'm guessing it could be at least somewhat a challenge...it should be interesting regardless!
monter
29th of July 2006 (Sat), 14:25
well... I'm sure I'll learn something from you all. I can't wait. though our meet is a day late for a wedding that is gonna have tricky lighting (mix of tungsten and flourescent and natural). I'll be a second shooter and I get paid on the number of good images. Thing is I can have LOTS of useable images if I can alter WB after the fact, but he requires me to shoot in jpeg. He hasnt' learned how to do RAW conversions yet.... crazy I know, but he's the boss :) So lighting will be the trickiest thing for me. I have one tonight that I'm not getting paid for.. hopefully I'll get some good practice!
joekr
29th of July 2006 (Sat), 16:34
wow, shooting a wedding in jpg is imho not the way to go...good luck!
What bodies are you and the other shooter using? I think I've read the light metering on the 30d and 5d are pretty darn acurate...
monter
30th of July 2006 (Sun), 22:09
Well I worked with him again last night. We both shoot with a 30D. I decided that I could NOT just shoot jpeg, so I shot RAW + jpeg. When he went to download them, I told him to just sort them by file type and take the jpegs. to which he replied... "wow, you can shoot both formats at one time??" I'm not kidding in the slightest! I'm glad I did because my in camera converted files are sooooo soft! I was shooting 800-1600...I was so dissapointed, but at least I have the RAW files to get something decent. his shots seem to be ok. It cracks me up that he's the pro and I know more about PP than he does. And I know more about our camera than he does! granted.. Iv'e had mine about 2 weeks longer than him.... lol I told him I learned a lot on this forum.. he said "wow what's it like to have that much free time?" if he only knew! lol
hope you all are having a good weekend!

Monica,
You can always just shoot RAW and have Bridge + Photoshop making copies in jpeg, tiff or psd (or all three of them for what it's worth) overnight. You'll save memory card space + you'll be able to apply some RAW adjusting to them if you wish.
Iit is easy enough in CS2 and I believe that in previous versions too.
monter
31st of July 2006 (Mon), 16:32
Yeah Julio I did that the first time with DPP (I don't have cs2 yet), but the pro didn't want to wait this time and specifically told me I had to shoot in jpeg. Hence my getting around it by shooting both. Thanks for the advice though. :)
