somewhere.. anywhere. I have stayed within an hour of the valley for almost two months... Yep, it's time to go, get out of town.... probably next week.. So, where should I go?..
A. Portland (six hours away, and there's a bestfriend with a foldout coach that has my name on it)..
B. Up north, maybe heading up past McCall could just drive for half a day and see where I end up...
C. down to Utah..and google some of the canyon areas.. (I like this cause I could stop at Twin Falls and I do want to do a shot of the falls with the sun coming up)
D. stay home.. wait for the wanderlust to end (usually doesn't happen) and tell myself that gas is getting to be way too expensive to wander around the Northwest cause i'm bored...
Okay, so who else gets wanderlust?... My mother always accused me of being part gypsy... but every couple of months this feeling comes up and I got to get out of town, go someplace, see something.... and most of the time it's by myself nobody else is invited.. they've learned not to take it personally.. (with the exception of one roommate that was annoyed at the note on the fridge that said, "driving east call you when i stop.. p.s. feed the cat) Lets hear it folks.. who likes to runaway from home periodically?...

You're in Idaho...Yellowstone is just across the state line.

I was on expedia today pricing a flight to anywhere for the weekend. As I can't afford airfare, I may drive up to Vermont for the weekend and see what I can find. There's nothing I like better than taking off somewhere new and exploring.
Hope you have a great weekend, wherever you end up! And whenever I think about gas prices, I just think, well, they probably aren't going to get any lower... so I might as well go now!

I think about getting away everyday when I'm at work:lol: Seriously, I do think about it all the time. The Gulf Coast is 3 hours away if I take my time. Sometimes, I like to get in the car and just drive. Gas prices has made me think twice about that now.
I say, go to your friends in Portland. You won't have to worry about a hotel room. Just the gas.

Wow, if I was 7 hours from Yellowstone I would take the whole week off, maybe 2, and go.

Never a day goes by without me wanting to pack light and head to Africa, India, Aussie, etc. I have little wanderlust for England. I have responsibilities here tho'. I also have two cats to take care of and living for now in a city where I dont have close friends to look after them. I just step aside from the desire to travel and take each day as it comes. You scratch an itch and it doesn't get any better. I will take a 3-4 day mini break soon tho'. I just need to decide where. Somewhere in Europe. Probably Amsterdam because I haven't been yet. It's a great blend of everyone speaking at least some English, lots of sites to see and street scenes, places to sit and watch the world go by, and easy access and local transport.

I think you should go Dave.. take lots of pictures and tell me all about it.. and i'm a little jealous.. I have a couple of states to choose from when deciding on a long weekend.... you get to decide on what country.....
as for me getting away i'll decide later.... I think i'm passed that age where I just go someplace without any forethought... For one, i've had the experience of the broken down car spending the night in the middle of the Nevada desert.. taught me a little bit of a lesson... and two, it was a bit of an eye opener when my family told me they wouldn't worry about my being gone until atleast a week had gone past..... Made me think that I was taking the, 'independent i'm gonna do whatever the heck I want to' mentality a little too far.... But, i'm leaning towards Portland, not quite as expensive as Yellowstone.... but, that park is fantastic but it's a little on the hot side this time of year.. I might save it for the fall.....

I had so much wanderlust that I just moved away from the States altogether. Have been living abroad in Europe and now in Japan for the past 25 years. Even though, I still get that feeling of wanting to get away from it all.

What's wrong with a desire to travel? :) Especially in a country as big as the US where you can just load up the car and drive for hours without worrying about customs, security, check-ins, lost luggage, and the whole load of nonsense?
I say go for it...and I fully agree with BeccaNH that gas prices aren't going to get any better. I said "I'd better save some gas by travelling less" when gas was 50% cheaper. Now I look back and say "damn, I should have been driving non stop in those days!" I can relate to the 'do it alone' part too - though not many people around me can. They can't understand why I don't spend my weekends partying and winding up on the floor of some club and having to be dragged to the cab and wondering how they get home like the rest of them. Or worse, like a parody of the Matrix movies said "You wake up in someone else's bed and believe whatever you want to believe" http://pix.lightrefineries.org/img/crackup.gif
And if I was 7 hours from Yellowstone I wouldn't take a week off, no way. I'd go every weekend instead for 52 weeks a year, gas be damned (isn't that why I work.. to pay it off )

I'm dying to run away from Gothenburg right now. I really could do with a visit to some friends abroad, but I'll settle for going to Stockholm over the weekend in beginning of September. :)

Grand Tetons?
That may not be as far (or crowded as Yellowstone).
I see on the map that there's a place called, "Craters of the Moon National Monument"...whazzat? Might be cool to visit...

You could come visit Delaware, we have a screen door factory :) Yellowstone might be more convenient, but do they have a screen door factory? I think not.

 Continuously
So much so, I take jobs that allow me to travel often and to places I would not think of, or afford. Middle of New Mexico, backwoods (desert:lol: ) of Arizona, Shanghai, Penang, etc.
I also travel outside of work, too. Usually to warm place during Canadian winters. Hawaii is a big favorite.
You may want to run through the Cascades and catch some mountains for a change, see Grand Coulee dam, hit the coast for a change.
Gas isn't going to get any cheaper in the near future, so................
Have fun

see...if I lived in the US I could have a driving license by now (admittedly 16 + 1 day is cutting it slightly close)...but in the UK I have to wait until I'm 17, and even then, I have school (admittedly its the summer holidays) and the UK sucks for just leaving - bad weather, and after driving for 6 hours, you've almost reached the top :O (from my hiding place anyway).
Anyway...I guess when I finish school I'll go travelling, and see where I end up...

Yes, of course, but often the responsibilities keep me within a few miles of home. Usually, my photographic activities include taking my wife along for the hike or to the fair or festival. In some ways, I'm finding that more restrictive. I feel like having a companion along (even if it's my very understanding wife), prevents me from taking my time and really seeking out the best angle/view of the subject.
It would be fun to travel with another photographer for a weekend trip - share expenses, ideas, and throw concepts at each other, but I don't know anyone who is really interested in that kind of trip.

Hey it's hot everywhere ... Portland is hot ... but at least the west coast (on the coast not near the coast) is less hot than anywhere else. Go to Portland than take Highway 1 to SoCal. Hit Eureka, hit the Russian River, hit some vineyards, hit SF, hit Santa Cruz, hit Hearst Castle and the California Central Coast, hit Morro Bay, hit Monterey, Santa Barbara, Malibu, Santa Monica, Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, Newport Beach, Laguna Beach, San Diego and on the way back hit Yosemite, The Sequois, Mt. Whitney and just to warm up after spending so much time on the coast, hit Death Valley or the sand dunes of Anza Borrega. (PS- and take me with you)
