Hi everyone!
In a couple of weeks, I am flying over to London to do some site seeing and also attend my nephew's 10 year old birthday. My gift idea was to get him a starter (cheapish) SLR camera. So I had a check at a local camera store and they were selling this Canon T-50 + 50mm 1.8 camera and lense. So I was just wondering if anyone had any expirience with this camera or if anyone could recommend me another camera. Something >$150 CDN would be great.
Thanks!

You might want to look for an EOS body and lens...The T-50 uses FD series lenses that are not going to be easily upgraded to the current lens system.
This is 50 dollars over your budget, but a much better choice. Perhaps another relative might be interested in splitting the cost?

have a look on ebay for used Elans, or rebels.
I'd also recomend EOS - if you want him to have the old style MF lenses, get a body only and some M42 lenses with adapters.

That is really a great idea I was given a cmaer by my Dad when I was 7 and it has evolved into a lifetime of enjoyment. The T-50 is really a good camera. However, as has been pointed out, for compatibility you would want to get an EOS.

Thanks everyone for the help. I guess I shall squeeze a couple of dollars out of my already tight budget and get an EOS system. Once again thanks for the help all!

MF is fun though...:)
i have a nikon FE that is wonderful... feels like more of a camera than what i have now! i think for a 10 year old a really basic slr would be great to teach them about exposure etc. The FE also has aperture priority mode which is very useful.

I used this camera for many years and still pull it out once in a while. It's a good one, but you'd be better off with a more contemporary model that uses EF mount lenses.

But you can MF with an EOS camera - just get an M42/Nikon F adapter and buy him cheap lenses. Same thing to stupot - you could use your Nikon F mount lenses with your Canon with a £10 adapter.
