I just realized that after 4 month of having G2 I never put it in the movie mode except once just for testing. I wonder if they could make a better/cheaper version of the camera without the movie mode.

Does anyone find it useful?

I used the video mode for one or two times just for fun. But usefull? No, I don't think so. Maybe to speak comments in the microphone about the place your making your pictures, impressions and things like that. For the rest? Buy a real videocamera for making videos.

I have found it useful a few times, to make little movie clips to sent to people by e-mail. Just simple, family stuff.

I'd guess it adds little to the cost of the camera, and its one of those features that potential buyers look at when choosing a camera. 'This ones good, AND it has a movie mode'

Then they never use it :)

I've found it useful lots of times. It's not real convenient to carry around both a video camera and a still camera. So, you can opt for a video camera and take good videos and so-so stills, or take along a good digital still camera and take great stills and so-so videos. I opt for the second fairly often.

Yeah, the quality isn't the best but I'm not striving for Hollywood film quality here. Basically, the people that I distribute the stills and videos to are primarily concerned about "memories" and only secondarily concerned about the quality. With some post-processing where I edit the stills and videos together into an mpeg "film" and burn the mpeg to a video DVD, the result is really much better than you might think.

I just used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago when we brought home our new puppy. I thought it was kind of neat. As others have noted, it is great for just sending a short clip to friends and relatives.
