30D focus point not lighting up?

As most of you know, I sold my 30D to Rikwriter a while ago. There's a bit of a problem. He said that when in the auto modes, the focus point will light up, beep, all that, when it locks focus. However, in the creative zones, it doesn't do any of that, although it still locks focus. Also, when choosing a focus point (with the button next to *), they will light up and he can choose one.

Could this be some kind of custom function that's doing it?

I mentioned that the only thing I could think of was if his hand happened to be on the focus ring of his lens when it was focusing, and he moved it a tad, it wouldn't beep. I didn't know if there was a setting that might prevent it. He said he tried clearing all of the settings, but that didn't do it.

Any ideas?

There's a custom fuction that stops them from illuminating. I forgot the exact number. I dont know if this function affects auto modes....

Tell him to look through the custom functions and see what he finds.

I could be wrong but after looking through the manual I don't see any function for turning off the AF Illumination. What good what that be for anyway?

It probably has something to do with the custom functions - there is a 'return to default' on the menu to reset them all - and another possibility is, what autofocus mode is the camera in? It might be in AI servo which does not beep to confirm focus - as it changes all the time. AI servo won't work in all the pic modes so the settings get over-ridden, this could account for the problem too.
Just a thought anyway - let us know how this turns out!

I noticed this too. When I had the camera in the sports mode the Ai servo mode is then active. See page 75 and 76 in the EOS 30D manual. It says the focus will not beep or the confirmation lights will not light. I looked it up after I noticed no beeping or lights.

If C.Fn 10 is set to "Off" the focus point(s) will not light up, but the camera will beep if the beep is set to "On"

BTW I corrected the problem by "Delete All Custom Functions." All is right with the world now. :D
