specifically, i was reading POPPULAR PHOTO mag last nite.
a few ads for canon had the super duper 800mm (i think) lens that probably weighed a gazzilion ounces and the monopod was connected lens. and the body just hung there.
i guess that connection is strong enough?
i guess i'm asking i shouldnt freak when my father picked up my 10d by the lens... or should i????

No that is fine, the lens mount (even the plastic ones) are easily strong enough for that-in fact that's how you should carry it and use it on a tripod, etc if the lens is heavy.

Look at it from the other point of view. If the lens is a 600mm F4 LIS (as an example, this lens is one of the super tele's that are in the range you mentioned) it will weigh 5.3 kilos.
The 10D weighs .75 kilos (1kg ish with big ed)
Would you be better having the tripod connected to the camera, and putting 5.3 kilos of stress on the lens mount, or mounting the lens on the tripod and putting the .75-1kg camera weight on the lens mount?

But surely that's with an empty CF card.

Oh yea, the camera weight goes over double with all those images on the flash card :D
