Need Strobe System Help

I have never used studio flash systems. Is there any books, videos, etc. that cover the use of studio strobe systems . . . in depth? I am sure that all systems come with an instruction manual, but any suggestions on where I might go to learn to use them without buying a power pack system first. Also, which system might be good for travel? Any battery powered for use when A.C. isn't readily available? Thanks.

There must be loads of books on studio flash lighting (have you searched Amazon?), the question is are there any good ones?

Can't say I know as I've never read one - like many photographers I picked up that knowledge as an assistant...

Other advice depends very much on where you are living, local pro camera outlets/clubs/etc., may have info on hire studios that run workshops for beginners. Systems vary from one country to the next, some makes are easy to hire in London and unknown in New York. Yes, you can get several makes of battery flash for location work, best to contact local pro suppliers to find out what is available in your area...
