Hello all,

I just wanted to add the Sigma 20mm 1.8 EX DG to the lens archive. Here are some shots i took last night, as well today. Its a really sharp lens, and im very happy with it. I bought mine from POTN member hammerdown on ebay for $379.00. It came with a Hoya 82mm Polar, and an 82mm B&W UV. This lens is a great deal!

Thanks David:)
I've been interested in this lens for awhile but have so far concentrated on buying decent tele lenses.
Very nice

So glad you like it! The sale partially funded my "upgrade" to a wider but slower f4 Sigma 10-20. Hope to have some test pics to post soon. Really missing f1.8, so I found some pocket change and picked up the infamous 50mm 1.8. It will be here tomorrow. Getting set for a NYC trip in a few weeks...

The sigma 20 1.8 is a fine lens. I've had one for quite some time. Very sharp, and focuses *very* close. A little "buzzy", but it does fine. Nice buy for $3-400. I think I managed to get mine for about $300 last year.

How did it do at 1.8 and 2? And how was it in low light?

 How did it do at 1.8 and 2? And how was it in low light?

It does great. At 1.8 100 iso i was even getting a little overexposure

Grego, if you are interested, theres a group who do free Shakespeare plays around the LA area. http://shakespearebythesea.org They love volunteer photographers if you ever feel the urge to shoot some theatre. The costumes are beautiful. I took these at Hamlet in San Pedro. Pt Fermin Park. 1.8 of course.

If you are talking to me, can you tell me about how old the lens is?
I remember reading your FS post on this lens. I take it your father has a cropped sensor body?

Ronald S. Jr.
29th of June 2007 (Fri), 21:11
He does. I used the lens a fair amount on a 5D, however, and still liked it.

The lens is probably 2.5 years old, but in perfect condition, and has an 82mm Hoya multi-coated UV filter on it, so the glass is mint (as is the body!)

Compared to the 30 1.4 sigma, which one would be a better buy focal length and faster aperture for the 30 aside? I'm looking towards focusing performance and AF noise.

Lovely pictures Tee Why!

Tee Why
16th of July 2007 (Mon), 01:02
These are different lenses. As mentioned, the 30 has HSM and faster/quieter AF.
The 20mm is softer in the center initially but when you stop down the center and also the corners become sharp. The 30mm doesn't really have a sharp corner imo.

For me, the min. focus distance of the 30mm is way too long. with the f1.8 prime series, you can get really close to the subject for a real dramatic composition that most other lenses cannot give.

So you have to see what type of a lens you are looking for and go with what fits your needs the best.

Hi. Would you recommend the Sigma 20 mm for museum and low light? I would imagine it's plenty fast enough.

I have to say one thing about this lens - test it carefully before you buy, and buy from a reputable dealer. I have a longish story about my more recent venture with the Sigma 20/1.8 including a bad lens, a bad dealer, and a bad repair job by Sigma.

I've seen great results from this lens, but I've also seen first-hand, what happens when you get a bad copy.

Thought I would add mine to the thread. I just got a replacement from Gentec (Canadian Sigma distributors/servicers) as the used one I bought needed to be repaired but the parts have been backordered for so long. This lens is great! Looking forward to using it more often.

this lens is amazing. i bought a used one for ultra cheap on ebay and i can say i use this quite often when i'm indoors tight quarters. AF is a bit slow and buzzy but thats ok for me.

the thing is, i have this sigma 20mm f/1.8 along with the sigma 14mm f/2.8 as well. both are superb except the 14mm lens is a bit soft until f4+ --- its hard for me to decide which one to keep and which one to part with.. at this point the sigma 20mm wins because it has a more usable shot even at f1.8 vs sigma 14mm f2.8.

Thinking of getting this lens, to replace my kit, 18-55 3.5-5.6 lens....
I have seen some of the most incredible shots with this Sigma lens, so I am pretty sure this will be the one.

I am looking for a prime, due to their quality, I have heard and experienced, prime lenses produce a great IQ, and are cheaper then zooms.
I will be using this lens for weddings (Group shots, ceremony, and reception). Would you guys recommend this lens for me? As a replacement for my kit lens?? (If I go for this Sigma, I will have 30mm, 50mm, and 70-300mm covered)

I'd think this would be a great wide angle lens for your needs. As long as you don't mind switching lenses to get the right focal length, go for it. I find this lens is great for detail shots (wide open, isolating the subject) and wide angles (stopped down for depth-of-field).

Quick check on the EXIF shows a 20mm focal length with f13.
So I'm pretty certain it was shot with the 20mm sigma.
I'm not sure if 9 blade aperture always ensures against a 6 sided flares.

Or could it have been shot with the wigma at 20mm? Hmmmm.

Well, there are hexagonal highlights, thus ensuring that your aperture was hexagonal as well. I am not aware of any off-copies of the 20/1.8 that were built with a cheaper aperture. Sigma is pretty good about using odd-numbered blades (generating more "rays-of-light" stopped-down than even numbers will [6 = 6 rays, 7 = 14 rays, etc.]) in their EX primes (ala Nikon).

I think the wigma has 6 blades, so it may be from the wigma.
I'll replace it with a toke 11-16 soon though.

I've never had issues with mine @ f1.8

You may want to be @ a minimum f2.8+ since most car shots are showing the 1/4 profile including the side of the car so f 1.8 may be produce a too shallow DOF.

I can tell you every shot I take with this @ f1.8 (typically of people) I love and when I show them off they get a good reaction as well from other people.

I do have a question for those that own it, looking at the lens on amazon it looks as if it has the aperture control where old manual lenses are located (near the mount). Is that how you change aperture or can I use the wheel on my XTI to change the aperture like all my other lenses?

Thanks Jojo, leave it to the in house lens expert to come up with the answer. So far I'm loving it on my 5D. Occassionally, I wish for a wider fov, but I'm trying to do more with less so I'm one body and less and less lenses.
Got it down to the el hombre, cheapma (24-60), nifty fifty, sigma 50 macro, 135 (no nickname?), and 400mm f5.6 (no nickname?). So only zoom is for general purpose walking around.

Yeh, the gear-drive focusing mechanism in this lens is a bit noisy, though not quite up to 35 f2 "wasp in a matchbox" standards. Sigma could use an MKII version of this lens adding ring USM with FTM. I'd love to see them put out a 16mm f2 with HSM also.

Edit: A 16mm f2 USM with close focusing!

What's all that green stuff on the ground? All we have around here is white stuff.
That green stuff is called grass. :) it was about 70 degrees that day. Yeah suck it up you folks frozen in snow. he he he.

As for the motor? Give me great optics, 20mm fov, f1.8, focusing so close you can almost touch the subject with the hood, all at under $400? and it can screech, oink, bark, or make any noise for all I care.

Lens is also approved by Homer. Diggin' the 18 point star burst from the 9 aperture blades as well.

I guess flares depend on a lot of factors. If you want more prominent 18 point stars, I'd try stopping down to more to like f8 or higher.

I use it on my 30D with no problems. The fov is a little awkward for my tastes (equivalent to a 35mm on a full-frame camera), but you can't beat the f/1.8 aperture.

thepepperman

I use it all the time on my 30D as well. For me the FOV is perfect; I like fast primes and this is a nice wide angle, without introducing some of the characteristic distortion that starts at 17-18mm. Sometimes I'd like wider but so far I've really enjoyed it.

My Sigma 20mm f/1.8 came in earlier this week! I have been real busy and have not had much time to play with it yet, but from my initial pictures I am very impressed. The colors and contrast it produces are outstanding. I have read all the complaints about it being soft around the edges wide open, but with the way I shoot that will not be too much of an issue for me. Also, I love how close you can focus on subjects, it creates a very unique perspective and allows for a very narrow DoF. And last but not least, the Bokeh it produces is outstanding.

I have spent most of my time shooting long, and I am still getting used to shooting with a wide angle. Here is one of my first shots with the lens. More to come soon!

That doesn't seem like a fair comparison considering the 17-40 is 2 + 1/3 stops slower wide open.

yeah, it KILLS the 17-40 at 1.8~3.5... ;) But yeah, it's just as sharp if not sharper IMHO.

:( Your posts were what convinced me to get this lens. Anyway, Good luck with the sale and thank you for posting info about this lens because I am very happy with my purchase.

really? It's been a hard choice for me. I love both lenses but I just can't part with the 24L. Even in shooting I find it hard to go for the 20 when I have the other option. It's not that it's bad, I just love the feel of the 24 on the camera (smaller lighter and a faster aperture). But for similar reasons I WILL NOT upgrade my 24 to the new version...

but this lens has proven to me I could probably survive with a 1.3 body (since this would be 26mm) or even on a nikon if I had to (nikon doesn't have anything fast and wide).
