The advantage being you don't need to put Deet on you if your lucky, or at least not as much.
Deet too is nasty stuff, i used some of the same bottle I;'m bringing to Africa in Maine while hiding in the bushes shooting Osprey,.
The stuff worked amazing.. but it also melted a bunch of the plastic on the Canon off shoe flash cord!

I have used the roll on deet based stuff you get in South Africa and here around my ankles in the evening. I don't think insects will be a huge problem. I don't remember much in Namibia apart from one night when we slept in the open. Not so sure about Botswana, but it will be dry there too.

Man it is harder to pack for a trip like this than a trip to USA....
I know what you mean, Tommy! When I go on a cruise, I know exactly what to take and I've got packing down to a science. Same with camping here in the states. But for this trip I've finally just had to convince myself to take what I think is right and I'll just have to live without whatever it is I don't pack. Otherwise I would end up with WAY too much stuff that I packed for "just in case".

Remember folket, the worst that can happen is you have to buy a few extra bits in Windhoek. We have a day there and we can pick up the food and general supplies in a couple of hours.
You can never cover every possible eventuality so kick back and relax, focus on the priorities based on realistic assessment. That applies in particular to the photo kit which will be difficult to replace, everything else is pretty much no problem.
We are not camping more than a couple of days at a time for good reason, so worries about power are not realistic with good planning and a few batteries ;-) We pass through several reasonably sized towns en route if we need other stuff and there are plenty of places to eat or sleep.
Generally, my policy is to take things out of my bags over the last few days because in all my travels I have learnt that I don't really need very much to have a great trip. Most of my trips have involved carry on bags only and but for my camera gear this one would too. Practical clothing makes a big difference and you will need little variety there.
The moment by moment joy of travel is exactly in the moment, not looking back and regreting or looking forward and hoping :-)

Its not as much what to take but how to pack it so chargers and stuff like that is protected by clothes.
And it turns out my bag is actually a little too big. I think the end weight will be around 18 kg but with plenty of space left so I need make sure everything is packed tight so it doesn't bounce too much around.

Why not wrap the more delicate stuff in bubble wrap, or even put it in a separate box with bubble wrap if you have the room?
My charger is in my carry on. Charger, battery, the other vital camera gear, memory, a guide book, key papers, a tshirt, laptop and basic toiletries are essentials should the cargo bag go missing. Everything else can be replaced within a couple of hours next day and is not essential and so that goes in cargo.
tommykjensen
19th of August 2007 (Sun), 14:58
The problem is I won't have room for charger in my camera bag unless I don't take my 70-200 f/2.8. But I definately don't have room for toiletries, tshirt or guidebook in my camerabag.
But I have have considered a small plastic box for stuff that could potentially break. I just didn't think of bubble wrap. I will check to see if I got any of that. I sometimes save that from when I receieve packages.
I do think I need a smaller bag. Ohh well off bag hunting tomorrow

I will be at the airport 5.00-5.30 ... train goes from St Albans to Gatwick direct so should be reliable. So plenty of time to check in, get some dinner, wander, etc. I wanna try and get a good seat if they are allocated. You can add the charger to my carry on if you want to. I assume this is for the mk III? I have a charger I'm taking for the 5D if you want to share. I doubt I'll use it much as I have lots of batteries.
I wouldn't get another bag because you may welcome the extra storage coming back. Also I think some make a huge fuss about how vulnerable cargo bags are. I have never lost anything or had things break on any of the many trips I have done.
Anyway, I'm sure whatever you decide will be fine ...

Tommy, just stuff in some spare underwear!
You never know, you may have some trinkets stuff on the way back too..
With the 500mm taking up so much room and weight, I am putting all chargers and lose batteries in checked baggage.. really no choice at all.

I hear you but there are so much extra space that everything can shift around under the handling and I expect there will be even more space when returning since there are things I don't plan on taking with me home like toiletries if there is not much left.
The bag I got is a 110L bag.
Thanks for offering to take the charger in your carry on but won't help me much since I still have the flight between Copenhagen and London ;-)

Oh and as for checkin. Since I arrive in Gatwick 6 hours before the flight leaves I will checkin as soon as I can. Then I can send Dave a text msg with the seat I got then you can try to either get a seat close or as far away as you like :p

I think I'll see you in line ;-) They won't check in until 3 hours at the earliest. No need to be shy Tom. I don't bite ... unless provoked. I'll do my research and then try and get the best seat with a few extra inches of leg room. I'm hoping to get a free upgrade to first class if I smile nicely and the flight is otherwise full :D If that is the case then I'll be sure to smile and wave at you through the first class curtain

Do you know which rows have extra leg room ?
I have started a thread we can use to post updates in if we get internet access. Jake suggested that so if we want to have friends/family checking for updates they can check that thread.

For now it is locked. We will unlock it once we are down there and can post updates.

Well you wanted to sit on your own so dunno if I want to tell you now.
The 340 Airbus does have certain seats with much more leg room but they are very limited. Our flight still has tickets available and they are the same price I paid way, way back, which possibly means the demand is not heavy or they would be more.
Best option is either get a seat next to an empty one if you can't get one of the good seats ;-) even if it means moving once the flight has taken off. Worst option is to get a window seat jamed in next to a very large bloke with an indian takeaway, several bottles of duty-free whiskey and who was already sweating heavily even at check-in :-)

I have started packing for real and i'm having a few 'girl' issues.. But, i'll get though them.. The nerves started hitting me tonight.. Especially when a couple of the Chefs stopped me for hugs and to wish me luck it hit me that i'm leaving in six days... At dinner last night my best friend mentioned that this is the first thing that i've really followed through on... Which is true.. i'm not great at commitment and finishing things I start.. wow!! just wow!! in exactly one week i'll be on an airplane flying to Africa.. y'all please please like me... and if you don't like me fake it til we get home.. jeez, i'm getting nervous..

Do what is necessary step by step without thinking any wider than that. Double check you have everything, be at the right place at the right time. Don't be late and if all else falls apart then just remember your passport and some money. Anything else can be sorted ;-)
There is nothing to be nervous of objectively but plenty to be excited by. All we're doing is getting on planes, landing in Windhoek, going on a trip and then returing home. We are organised and what isn't yet is no big deal. Everyone seems perfectly reasonable or they wouldn't be going. If anyone is a real pain in the ass then we'll just leave them at the roadside to be eaten :-)
For a long time I have asked for isle seats and that is definately also what I will do on this flight.
You can print out a seat plan for the plane and that shows the best seats, which are located right at the doors.

I will definately bring these 3 books
A photographic guide to Birds of prey of southern, central and east africa.
A photographic guide to Tracks and tracking in southern africa.
The Kingdon pocket guide to African mammals.
I will bring above books plus
Southern African Wildlife
And either Bradt's guide on Namibia or on Botswana. Dave which one do you bring ?
condyk
20th of August 2007 (Mon), 04:07
I am bringing both the Botswana book by Brandt and the Nam/Bots book by Lonely Planet. Both are excellent and both are this years editions so as up to sdate as we can get. Tommy, bring the Namibia Brandt book then we have the perfect combo.
I finally got through to our booking agents are they are very nice and very apologetic. They are having problems with their internet connections with it cutting out all the time. This means sending large attachments (our vouchers) has proven impossible. Lilly promised to try to send them today and if still not possible then we will pick them up direct from them, or they will be left at Pension Steiner for us. To be arranged, but all is confirmed which is the main thing.
I also have my packing list which I can upload tonight. There are very few changes to the original one I uploaded several months back, more a refinement based on clothing needs. On that, not worth packing more than 5 days worth of clothes, lightweight boots, sandles and shower sandles, hat and fleece.
Any questions then do ask ... and remember there are no stupid questions, just stupid people ;-) Ok, just joking ... you really should ask them here tho' or IM me. Also, have a look in your guide books about 'wildlife' dangers and imprint that info on your brains, eg. shaking boots in the morning for Scorpions, not petting snakes, Lions and spiders, etc :-)

As for lightweight boots. Are sneakers not good enough or are boots essential? I do have a pair of boots but it is more winter boots than lightweight boots.

I wouldn't bring these:
Light rain jacket
Plastic knife/fork/spoon
Sewing kit
DVDs
Small first aid kit as Pat has the basics
AA batteries and charger
Car camera battery chargers unless I had fewer than 4 batteries
What about CF cards ;-)
All else seems well thought through. I will store images on computer and on my Zen player as backup. The DVDs seem like overkill as you have two storage media already. All the AA batteries I dunno what you need them for. I am just bringing 4 AA's for my torch and a fast charger, tho don't expect to use it much.

Ok.
The rainjacket was only because it was mentioned in the wiki
The AA batteries are extra for my flashlight and the AAA are for my laptop mouse. (I hate the builtin touchpad). And the rechargable AAs are for the gps. I take the car adaptor for that charger because it is lighter than the transformer to main power.
You are right I forgot to list the cf cards.

You will probably all think I am crazy but I bought a new bag today. I should have bought this one from the beginning. When I choose the other one I did look at precisely this one too but thought it would not be big enough. But it is better organised with 2 larger rooms, a smaller and an even smaller.
The bottom compartment even has a divider like we have in our camera bags, the 2 large rooms can be converted to an even bigger room by removing a divider that is zipped. And the entire bag even be extended with 2 inches through another zipper.

I'm rethinking my tripod.... how often do you really think I would need it? I have a beanbag for use in the car. And the darn thing weighs a lot! Is anyone else taking one?
tommykjensen
20th of August 2007 (Mon), 13:40
I am neither taking a tripod or monopod. But I don't have a beanbag and no photostores near me have them. They were almost a big questionmark when I asked for it.
My monopod with head weighs 1,1 kg and thats why I don't want to bring it. Now if it only weighed around 500-600 grams then I would consider it.
condyk
20th of August 2007 (Mon), 13:43
I am taking mine but it is very lightweight. I wouldn't even think of taking it if it was heavy. There is only one place I plan to use it and that is at the waterhole at our first Etosha camp. There is a wall overlooking the hole and you can use a beanbag on that.
Do you want me to order you a beanbag Tommy and bring it with me? It's an essential item though you can use a towel or similar.
buddy4344
20th of August 2007 (Mon), 16:49
As I noted earlier, I just returned from Botswana. A beanbag is a must. some even used a second beanbag on top of their larger lens to further stablize it. But remember, many things can serve as a beanbag: a small pillow like you use on airplanes, a large ziploc bag filled with lentils, etc. Be creative, but find one.

Looks like a good set up and a wonderful backdrop to breakfast.
Are we camping in Etosha or staying in a Rondeval? I wouldn't mind camping either!
Both ... we are at three very different camps as we travel from our entry gate South-West across to the exit East. We also have option to camp in Botswana around Maun, where there are plenty of camp sites, the Pans or Central Kalahari.

Definately! I've got the Benedryl packed so I can get some sleep on the plane!
I've also got some amusements packed in my carryon... playing cards, novel, sudoku book, journal... and I've heard that on SAA you are very well entertained. Lots of movies and snacks and stuff to make the time go by easily.

Well, US folks...
I just called SAA to see how full our flight was and to see what the possibility of an upgrade was. The bad news is that there is no chance of an upgrade because there is only one seat left in business class and they only go to their Voyager club members. The worse news is, there are only 12 seats available on the entire flight. Which means prepare for 16 hours playing like a sardine! (I am seriously going to have to drug myself to get through this flight....)
The good news is... when we get off the plane, we will be in AFRICA!!! :D

Go to the toilet before you leave, walk around or stretch a little every now and again, sniff water up your nostrils to avoid your sinuses getting dried out, avoid alcohol. What else can you do on a long flight but suffer ;-) I don't do drugs if I can at all avoid it so it'll be 12 hours of movies or bad sleeping for me I guess.
I also have a cold developing I think but hope it clears by Sunday and a huge amount to do work wise on Friday. I think my immune system is a bit low at the moment, but some fresh air and being relaxed will make a big difference. Saturday I clean up ready for my Cat sitters and sunday I pack and check everything. So I won't stop 'til I am on the plane.

£17.94 ... unfortunately P&P for fast delivery was £6.95 of that but couldn't risk normal post. They are good 'bags for car use as they screw to the camera or lens tripod mount so they don't drop out on the floor and they are much faster to use than other types. I'm sure you'll get lots of use from it.

Bon voyage to one & all, have a great time and take many stunning images. Be safe and enjoy every moment.
As for the long flights - do not forget your "flight socks" (pressure stockings) I know I mentioned these oh way back but they are supposed to be so beneficial in reducing the potential for DVT. Remember drug induced sleep still means you blood will or has the potential to pool in the lower body and legs resulting in sluggish circulation - just take care to travel safely to start with & do your seat exercises not forgetting to get up and walk around every few hours.
Nuff said - I look forward to seeing the results of your enjoyment :D

Arranged with our agent to drop the vouchers we need for Etosha 'round to Pension Steiner on 27th. My walking socks, a book to read and a couple of new CDs also arrived safely. Sun specs arriving Saturday AM. That is it.
So, I am finished with working today too. All went very well and I tied up everything needed very nicely, so now I can relax knowing I also put things in place to kick off again when I return. Very happy to have finished so that I can refocus and relax :-)
Man, it is so cool to be able to finally chill knowing all I needed to organise on every front is done. Now only fate or stupidity can intervene and not much we can do about that ;-)
So y'all have good flights and eat and drink healthily so you don't pay for it upon landing. Realise please that you are in Africa and that your bags will arrive down the shute ... eventually! Be nice to the customs people. Don't complain about silly things because that isn't why y'all are there. Y'all want sh** to be like at home then y'all should of stayed there ;-) Things are as they are and you won't change anything. In africa, getting mad and aggressive is seen is strange behaviour and very rude, so please don't do it. I'm sure y'all are wise enough to flow with things and be polite. You will find people helpful if they can be and things usually work out when they are ready.
Watch out for me standing around with a POTN sign at arrivals (assuming y'all don't get arrested first!) I will have a Buddha hairstyle, check shirt, maybe my brown tit for tat, depending on the wevah, and with a bored look on my Chevy Chase, aka boat race ;-)
Remember: passport, tickets and credit cards. All else can be sorted if you lose or forget stuff. Put them in the clothes you're wearing on the day now! Double check before you leave.
That's it Posse ... I am on IM if any last minute queries or panic attacks. Otherwise I got house cleaning and packin' and checking to do; so see y'all in Windhoek.
Tommy, just look for the ass with a big black Crumpler hanging off his shoulder and a check shirt. Do you have an e-ticket or a proper one? I have an e-ticket which never seems right!
tommykjensen
24th of August 2007 (Fri), 13:03
For my CPH to Gatwick flight I got an e-ticket. I like e-tickets especially when I fly with SAS because then I just use my frequent flyer bonus card as the ticket.
From London to Windhoek and back I got a proper ticket.
Didn't do much work today. Mainly because my boss asked me to help reinstall a laptop for him and that takes for ages. And then I left early.
Yesterday I checked my laptop to make sure I got all the software I needed and realised that I had forgotten to install excel to keep track of my budget. No big problem right? Well for the past 6 months I have been looking frantically everywhere for my office 2003 cd. I never found it so I had to buy it today. But of course it is the new version 2007 which is alot different from 2003. Anybody want to make a bet that when I return the 2003 cd will pop up....
Will do my packing tomorrow.

Do you mean where are we meeting in DC? I think we had talked about meeting up at the departure gate. It looks like South African Air departs from Concourse B so I guess when we get in we can just check the monitors for our gate information and head that way. When we are all accounted for, we can probably wander the airport a bit. I've never flown into Dulles so I don't know what's available, but I'm sure we can find someplace to hang out for a few hours!

Jake, when I went to the Customs office in Manchester to register my stuff, he said that most likely we wouldn't have any problems coming in from Africa (although he couldn't guarantee we wouldn't meet up with a customs officer who had had a fight with his wife before he left for work!) I think as long as you have the receipts, you will be ok. As he said, it would be different if we were going to Hong Kong, but most people don't go to Africa to buy electronics and camera equipment! :D
Also, I checked the list of offices on the US Customs site (http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/contacts/ports/dc/5401.xml), and that office is not open on Sunday.

Not me!
As for your carry-on, as long as it fits in the overhead I wouldn't worry too much about the weight. I have never had them refuse a carryon because of weight. Size, yes... but not weight.
I was reading some reviews of South African Airways (http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/saa.htm)and a couple of people mentioned that they don't do anything to control the amount of carryon luggage. Now, I'm not saying we should try to break the rules or anything, but I don't think you are going to have any problems.

I don't know your full flight plan but are you flying straight to your destination? The low cost carriers in South Africa like kulula, 1 time and the like are quite fussy with luggage. Therefore you might get it to South Africa but then have a problem if you need to jump somewhere else

I've decided I'm going to start taking them when we get to Windhoek. I'll be able to get 2 doses in before we leave town and like Dave said, chances are we won't run into mosquitos until we get up into the Caprivi region. Since I've never taken it, I would hate to have a bad reaction to it when I have to spend 16 hours on an airplane! Better to deal with it on the ground if problems to occur!

We are on SAA all the way to Windhoek. And as I have never flown them, I can only go by what I've read from other people who have. *shrugs* Whatever happens... happens, I guess. CDS has a backup plan either way.
I can't really say because the last time I flew SAA was many years ago. Generally they can be fussy :/

You got a point there. I think I will do the same.

I completely re-packed, so I;m not as over the Weight limit as before ... So, who think they will sleep tonight?
Nice job big man ... I had concerns over you getting all your stuff through. I am leaving quite a few bits too as once I started going through it all in detail I decided certain stuff wasn't going to add value or was duplicated what others are taking. I will sleep fine. Rare I have nerves or think much about anything in advance once I know I am prepared :-) It might hit me as I arrive at the airport because I have an irritational suspicion of e-tickets and African airlines
Got the insect repellent packed? I've never been to Namibia myself yet but did you have to take those horrible malaria tablets?

I decided the opposite ... but there is no right answer. I just thought take my first tonight with milk to see if I had a reaction. If I do I won't take them. Risk is very small in the dry season. I tried my contact lenses for first time in a year. They make a big difference to practicality on a trip. Man they made my eyes itch. I should have built up wearing them over the last week

Cool ... hope y'all have a nice time later. Let us know. I just placed a note on my front door saying CHECK ... to remind me to treble check my papers before I finally leave  :lol:

I saw that! I'm hoping to get some shots nightime landscape shots if I can find a place to prop my camera on a beanbag for a long exposure.

Had a great visit with Sari! We *almost* went to our local amusement park... but time constraints held us back. :( But we had a nice dinner and an even better visit and now she's back at the hotel with a 4am wake up call.
Safe travels everyone!

Just a heads-up to you US folks who haven't left yet...
I had a minor freak-out last night (ask Patrick!) because United (my first flight) knew nothing about my flight from Joburg to Windhoek. If any of you run into this... don't worry! I called SAA (in South Africa since the North American call center is not open on weekends!) and the very nice lady there explained that we will have to pick up our luggage in Jo'burg and go through customs. Then we will re-check-in for our flights to Windhoek.
So all is well! Fly safe and I'll see you soon!

Good morning all.. I have about thirt minutes until the shuttle takes me back to the airport... Visiting with Beth was really nice.. It's 5:30 in the morning!!! Excuse me all if i'm a little drowsy in Dulles.. I took Dave's advice and bought a face mask and some ear plugs so I may manage to take a nap on the way to Dulles.. I'm a little tired, a lot excited and looking forward to meeting everyone.. Have safe journeys and i'll see y'all this afternoon..
Sari.
