Hi guys, I'm a student photographer at GWU in DC, and have been a member here for a few months, but this is my first post.

I wanted to know what programs you use to transfer your images from card to computer. I have the CF card reader, and currently use the canon zoom browser ex software that came with the camera, but I was wondering if there is anything faster or more professional?

Thanks for your help

I treat the CF card just like a drive letter. I use a double paned file manager called Total Commander (http://www.ghisler.com) which has a very intuitive renaming utility that I use to rename to fit my workflow.

Agree. use a card reader, select drag and drop to whatever folder on your hard drive.

The software that comes with Canon DSLRs (it's just called "CameraWindow" when it appears) is what i use. i've got it set to automatically copy new pictures to the computer when a card is detected. Works rather simply but well for my uses.

Phase One Media reader part of Capture One. Plug in a CF into reader and it'll automaticly launch itself and ask where you would like to copy it to and when its done it ask if you want to delete the file from cf. There are others like it but of the the top of my head can't recall.

DIM from http://www.alanlight.com . You can configure it to automatically start and copy your images as soon as you put a CF card into your card reader.

^^^ can you set it to read the date of the images and create a new folder with the date as the name to copy to there ?

if so that could be real handy for the lazy people, since i sort my pics by date (07.17.2006 et cetera)

I also treat it as another drive, drag and drop.

I use Windows explorer, even though RSP has the option to transfer.
Also, RSP has several options to rename a batch of files.

Since I do high volume shooting, I use the following software, the first two is my main choice.
Photo Mechanic
Downloader Pro
ACDSEE was what I started using years ago when I started shooting. When I do event/onsite print work then I use Canons software.
Each software has their own plus and minus depends on your workflow and needs

It looks good, but it requires that I install the JRE, which I refuse to do.

Canon zoom browser is good enough for me but many pros do recommend breeze browser pro too. It dose offer many options.

One thing I like about Windows explorer is that I copy the Folders to my hard drive in one group. Then it's easy to Move the files to the top folder (100CANNON) & rename it.

I used to copy the files from each folder, but then had to wait to copy the ones from the next folder, which took too much time.
Then I use RSP to either rename all of them as a group, or rename small groups different names, which works well for different cars, etc.

I use Downloader Pro by BreezeSys.com (http://www.breezesys.com).

Download, rotates, renames, inserts IPTC info, plus loads of other features.

I use the CF card like a drive. I use the burn tool for Dell or HP, whatever computer I'm using, and copy the whole thing to a DVD or CD for clients or myself. Then I copy the files to my external hard drive if I am going to do a lot of editing. I have a card reader for my laptops and my new desktop has a reader. Because I get nervous about losing files, I do this double copying all the time.

Downloader Pro has my vote as well. It's not the most user-friendly looking application compared to other consumer software included with cameras, but once you've read the Help section and used it a few times, it becomes relatively intuitive. It offers a month's free trial download, where you can then purhcase for $30US I believe. I was using ZoomBrowser, but felt it was too slow. For those who have Canon and download using Windows Explorer, don't your vertical shots stay horizontal? Downloader not only maintains the proper orientation, but you can also have it convert your ppi from the Canon default of 72ppi to one of your preference (e.g., 300ppi). This is a great timesaver and I prefer doing it on the front end rather than batch process later in Photoshop.www.breezesys.com/Downloader/index.htm (http://www.breezesys.com/Downloader/index.htm)
