View Full Version : Sunset After a Rain - Which One
Radtech1

One of the days that we had in Dresden rained all day long. Just about an hour before sunset the rain stopped. I was one of at least a dozen people running around with a tripod setting up wherever we could.
These are the three that are about the best from this location. I am going to be entering one in a local contest, and am conflicted as to which one.
Do you have any preference? If so, what is it about that one that appeals to you more.

This is tough, You have more detail visible in image 2 and a better composition, But I like the sun in image 1. If you could tone down the sun in #2 a bit, then I woud say you have a winner.

No 2 for me. I particularly like the light on the benches.

#2 definitely. You see more city, and you get the nice perspective with the benches and the great light on them. I only wish the light was the same in #2 as it was in the first. The yellow-ish portion seems too strong in #2. #1 is nice and mellow, suiting the mood of the evening cityscape.
Anyway, #2 for sure. Very nice indeed.

Gotta be No.2. Has the best composition and colour. No 1. has some of the tower missing and looks unbalanced. No 3. has the large dark area in the foreground. Go No.2.

Number 2 for me also... i like the railing coming from the bottom left corner... to me, it seems better than coming out of the middle. (or as others said... better composition) :-)

I can't decide. I like the composition in #1, but I think It might be improved by lightening slightly to bring out the foursome on the left. I like the mood you created in these shots.

Hard to choose...I think I prefer the composition in the first one...but the light and colours are wonderful in all three of them, nice work!

For me, number 3, by far. The lines in that one are beautiful: the rail, the road, the bridge. Perfect, clean simplicity with the best sky of the three.

In my opinion, nr.1 is the best in terms of composition and interest throughout the image.
the line of the road is perfect to lead us into the photo but in the midle theres another line that intersects the road without being perpendicular to the horizont/ bottom of the image. That line lead us to the 4 individuals that are near enough to allow us to find detail in them and the angle also favors looking beyond them to the buildings. The bench can still be seen in the foreground and it avoids the line of benches that we see on the 2nd photo. I think this image has enough lines in it, so the individuals in the 1st photo add more value to the image than the benches.
Also the sun can be seen on the 1st photo andit drives our eyes towards it not just the difuse light we can see on the 2nd photo.
I think the 1st photo is realy a great image, while the second is pleasing and as for the 3rd it is only "regular".
But again that's my opinion.

#1 for me, but i wish the people went in the photo.... I think it takes away from the magic of the photo.
But thats just my opinion.

#1 - I especially like the sheen of the roads and pavements, definitely conveys wetness to me.

hard time choosing, but I'd say the composition in #2 is the best - you've got some fantastic texture from the benches as well as light and shadow with the spires and bridges on the horizon. Very nice.

# 2 probably has the better compostion with the railing leading you into the photo but for some reason I just love #1. Have you tried just lightening up the shadows a tiny bit and darkening the highlights by the same amount to show up the people? It might also look good that way. I think it is a toss up! Tough decision! Don't know which I would choose. Good luck!

I like the light on the benches in no 2 but I think it's leading viewer's attention outside the photo. So it must be no 1 in this case. Great job!

i felt the same as most of the above
no. 1 for good composition... no. 2 for good lighting...
if i really have to choose, no. 1 looks more like a winner as the vanishing point in no. 2 tends to be too centre weighed

#1. I like that the tall minaret is at 1/3 frame.
#2 and #3 are great too, I just prefer #1.

I definitely like #1 the most. I like the angles and the colors in #1. In #2 everything is perpendicular, and the stuff in the foreground (the lower right corner) pulls attention away from the rest of the scene. They are all beautiful. Still, I think #1 is the best.
Disclaimer: I’m a beginner, so take my opinions with a very small grain of salt.

What I don't like in #2 is the view of the parking lot which is dab right smack in the middle of the frame. #2 has vivid colors though.
One more reason why I picked #1.

Radtech1,
The suspense is killing me.
Have you decided which one you're gonna use? If so, what was the rationale for your choice?

Thank you one and all. My personal favorite was number 3, as it demonstrated more of the bridge, which is one of the icons there in Dresden. Be that as it may, numbers 2 and 3 seem to be evoke the most response, and I decided to go with #1 for the contest. I think it was the figures (the human element) clinched it. As it turned out, I did not get it printed in time for entry for July, so I am going to have to wait till the third Thursday in August. I will update this when I find anything out.

composition, lighting and detail are best in #2. I actually like the sun the best in this one too. Did you add vignetting intentionally in PP or is that from the lens?
