A couple of months ago I lost all my photos on a Compact Flash Card - disaster!
It was a week-end and needed the shots. No bureaus were open and in desperation I found a $29 piece of software called PhotoRescue. It recovered not only 95% of my shots but all the deleted ones using up unused space on the card.
I have now learned to format the card in camera (!) before each use - it was nearly an expensive lesson.
