I really like this shot of my wife and kid, but not sure which direction I want to go with it PP wise. I toned down the red to give it more of a "nostalgic" look. I think it might look good in B&W. I don't know. Throw me a bone here, people.

It's a great shot the way it is. I like the b&w idea but I think I would crop it a little closer and get rid of the shower curtain. It's an amazingly peaceful image of your wife and baby - congratulations!

I'd make it portrait instead, and take some of each side off. Both are useless and distracting. Only other thing is, the little one's hair is green. Other than that, a very sweet shot.

Since it's kind of a tight shot anyway, I couldn't do much for that portrait crop without getting pretty close, but I kinda liked this too. Had a couple plays...this was the best (for me):

I liked the sepia/B&W better because it drew me more to that ever so tender moment, instead of the colors in the shot. This is one you should definitely hold onto, bub.

Well I'll be damned. His hair is green. I really need to recalibrate my monitors soon. All I'm getting is red x from you btw.

Great Photo - here's a workup that I just kept adding to and adding to - anyway I'm not sure it works but here it is for review - a BW conversion with some grain and glow, crop ;)

Just don't like the halo around her head and the square crop. Otherwise, not bad. A little too dark, maybe. I'm partial to my own. Surprised?

Might as well jump in. Soft focus looks great but I thought it would be interesting to see some evidence of being in a very wet place.

Eh... B&Ws are hard to do well.

Nice image by the way. No better place for an infant son to feel totally safe and at peace.

cheers

yeah?

Perhaps a greater power has passed judgement on the quality of my attempt and has deemed it unworthy for viewing

nothing unusual in the way I uploaded it...have done it countless times before [shrug]

Here's my go. It's a mix of center of interest glow and a black & white layer with a reduction in opacity then a crop to tighten it up, and eliminate that horizontal line on the wall behind them.

I can't add to any of these. They're fantastic, especially the close cropped portraits! Nice job, LM! :-)

In my never to be humble opinion, I like the versions Stevie@JC posted. And here is why:

The black and white looks more natural. The water droplets on your wife's skin look like water droplets and not a skin condition. The highlights and shadows couldn't be more perfect. And lastly...the skin texture of both Mom and Babe are smooth and wonderful.

Of course, I'm not a pro...but hey...that is the one I like ;-)

No offense to Stevie, but I didn't like them at all. The effect, I thought, made her look a bit odd, and it blurred the baby right out. I still like mine best.

Yup, you'd be the one. I just didn't care for that effect, whatever you did. The baby seems blurry, and that ruined it for me. However, the wifey likes them, so that's what matters, I suppose.

So the consensus is b&w over color? Cool.

Ronald S. Jr.
18th of July 2006 (Tue), 19:50
I think if it were in color, it should be a bit more mellow. Of course, I just feel that a moment like that should be captured for what it is, instead of for color. Black and white makes you focus on what it's all about, instead of being just "pleasing to the eye". Black and white makes you think about the photographer, it tends to pull you into "another world", where you might think about who those people are and so on, instead of just "aww...sweet."

At least it does to me? :|

I normally like colour best, but agree that black and white works better in this case. Some great work on the various edits.

All the edits are awesome, but yours is my favourite. It has a nice softness to it that really goes with the subject matter :-)

Hi<

At first I thought that a tighter crop should be done also. But after seeing the original image vs the cropped ones I think you could crop slightly but other than that leave it alone. If its not broke don't fix it.

The image captures a wonderful moment. It's warm both literally and figurativly. It's soft and meaningful well past the tech portions of the shot. You need to see the elements within the image to understand its power. Water, hugs kisses and a lack of clothing make this a natural winner.

This image will continue to supply it's owner with a simple pleasure that comes from being a parent. It's not a staged shot on a lame background with studio strobes and other such equipment. Those devices would interfer with the quality of the image. A better mother child portrait would be hard to accimplish by a pro.

I think this photo because it lacks colors(background tiles don't really do anything and no special lighting) to muted colors or black and white. Or duo/tri/quad tone. :)

But then I thought, why not go with muted colors. I dropped the saturation to -55(playing by eye). But then I've been in a recent phase where I've liked this slightly desaturated images.

http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3311/lord2660gj3sa5.th.jpg (http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/3311/lord2660gj3sa5.jpg)

I cropped for rule of thirds, so i took a little off your wife to put her in the corner leading to the awesome moment. The corner will lead to your wifes cheeks which lead to her lips on your precious child. I wanted to leave some negative space to contrast and also hold my 3rds. I applied some USM 120, .3, 0.....giving it a little more pop but wanted to still keep it soft as to retain the precious moment. I probably should have applied some curves/levels though.

Hope that gives you my method to my madness. Great photo. I really love it.

The left side of the babie's face and the whole eye/nose portion look very very soft, to the point of almost blurry. I'm not trying to disrespect you or anything, just pointing out some things. Just look at the same part of the mom's face as what's showing on the baby, and look how they compare in sharpness. The baby just doesn't seem to look quite right.
